Logos 10 on Windows vs IOS (and which tablet works best alone).

Ok, I'm back and its ok to groan: I am asking the same questions though I hope a little differently.

I am thinking of making the switch from my old Surface Pro 3 to Ipad Air Version 5 (on IOS) coupled with the overly expensive "magic keyboard." What are the pluses and minues, pros and cons? I have heard for years that Logos 10 on IOS is not as powerful or robust as Logus 10 say on Windows Surface Pro (latest version).

Also, anyone prepare, teach, preach JUST FROM A IPAD TABLET of any kind?

Conservative Baptist Mdiv graduate from Luther Rice Seminary still looking and not yet ordained....and teachable with servant's heart. Can we put down roots at your church? Two pieces of advice: First, if you don't have a vocational need, don't run out and blow your money on new stuff. Why bother? Be content! When you find the ministry opportunity you are looking for, your needs will be more clear, which will inform your purchases. Second: If you can only have one device for Logos, make it a computer.

If you are dying to rush out and get new stuff anyway, here is my advice again:

Don't get the iPad Air. Get the base model. Don't get the Magic Keyboard. Get a logitech Pebble mouse & keyboard. With the money you save, look for the best windows laptop you can afford.

If money aint no issue, get a beefed up MacBook Pro and iPad Pro. [H]

seeking an associate pastor

Not with in Forum Guidelines because it has nothing to do with LOGOS: As someone who has served in local churches in a variety of roles since 1988, Unless you have music or youth passions, an associate role will be VERY difficult to find. You are more likely to find placement and receive ordination by serving part-time in a smaller church that cannot afford a full-time pastor. Also, depending upon your convictions on "Baptist" the UMC (in our part of the country) is seeing more churches disaffiliate than pastors who are disaffiliating. The Global Methodist Church is eagerly looking for "conservative" (that is going to mean something different depending upon who you ask) pastors. If an "Assistant" role is where your heart lies, the best path is to develop relationships with pastors in mid-size churches.

Thanks Mr. Thomas (and JT). I need to put down roots soon. I am not getting any younger. At 61 most are thinking of retirement....not me. I was called to ministry at 14, lost my way in college, was actually born again in my 30's and now at 61 would love to serve. I graduated from Luther Rice Seminary years ago. Wow time has flown. I've ministered in daytime roles I have had but not served professionally as an ordained pastor. I have found that road very narrow and Covid really set me back. I actually saw many family and friends get sick after attending church and spent time away from church....so its like starting over. I tell myself that Moses and Daniel both were used of God well into their 80's and beyond so I have a few good years left God willing. I think most pastors worth their salt never retire anyway.

I love music but I cant play an instrument. Not led to help youth as a focus (God bless em!) and even here in "rocky" and "thorny" Rhode Island, I have found churches and church plants very solidly geared toward college students almost to the exclusion of everyone else. I understand the focus but those over 50 still have a lot to offer and I believe God has equipped me as one of them.

Now back to the Logos string. My old Surface Pro 3 is usable but soon not going to be updated anymore. In fact, I think its so majorly outdated now its doesn't even get updates anymore. I cannot put the newest version of Windows on it. I thought why not switch to an Ipad Air 5th generation as a jack of all trades piece of equipment.

Seems noone really ONLY uses an Ipad and instead favors laptops or a full featured version of Windows 11 on the updated Surface Pro 9.

I wanted to read, compare notes in Logos 10 side by side, and start to create sermons again on a new machine what wont be immediately outdated or bankrupt me if I purchase the hardware.

Before you all remind me - I know I need to buy the updated Logos full feature set by the end of the day too but I am one of these feet draggers who doesn't think the newest version of the software made that many improvements except a few cosmetic changes. I want simplicity, speed and ease of use not features I will never use. The Factbook is the only thing that offers any real new excitement to me in Logos. Not being critical on purpose just honest.

Hard to imagine that no one out there is just using an Ipad to do everything in fulltime ministry. Wishful thinking on my part I guess. When did you last see a preacher effectively hold an Ipad in the pulpit and look/sound competent?

"Stick to Windows on the dud you have already cuz you're poor Josh" is what the still voice inside me is really saying. I hate to spend up to 1K on a decent Surface Pro 9 when there may be a cheaper more usable way to go.

Thanks everyone for your replies here. I read the other ones with the much cheaper keyboard suggestion with great interest too. God bless you all. I hope the Lord takes me back and uses me for His glory and to serve His people soon.

New hardware is NOT going to bring me closer to God but over time I hoped it would help me serve him well and long.

I use an iPad for preaching and have done for the past eight years or so, but I can’t unhook Logos from the laptop for several reasons:

You can’t prioritise books on the mobile or web app, so you have no control over the order that books, especially commentaries, appear in the Passage Guide, which is the engine of my sermon preparation.
Popups don’t work in mobile, so you have to do a lookup to do work on the original language rather than just getting at-a-glance information on a word’s gloss, parsing, etc.
you can’t tag books in your library on mobile or the web app, so have less control over what appears in collections and therefore in the Passage Guide.
The Cited by tool doesn’t work in mobile (or, it think, the web app) and I use this extensively in sermon preparation.
You can’t create or edit Collections, which reduces your control over what appears in the Passage Guide and searches.
You can’t have multiple floating panels, which I tend to use for sermon prep - I usually have the Sermon Editor open in a floating panel.
Less importantly, things like maps don’t work as well on mobile, and I tend to refer to them in sermon prep a lot of the time. You could probably get around pad this with things like the Carta resources or a Bible atlas on mobile.

Those are the things that prevent me from using an iPad for preparing sermons (apart from the fact I can work far more productively on the Windows version). If you have access to a “full” version on a laptop/desktop you probably could do most things on mobile, but you can’t do the things that get you set up to work well.

Credentials: Over 30 years in Information Technology (deskside support, server implementation and support, server room design and implementation, yada, yada. You get the drift. I have quite literally bought thousands of PC's ranging from itty bitty "consumable" machines to the most sophisticated workstations available for engineering and scientific users. I was the Director of UNIX Projects at General Electric, Director of C4 Systems Infrastructure (Ashore) for the US Navy, more yada yada, learned and taught IOS (Apple) in a variety of environments and locations. SO! Windows since 1980, Apple since ~1991, UNIX since 1986.

Advice: If you want simplicity, speed, and ease of use: stick with your current knowledge base (Windows), and pray hard about the advice you've already gotten to refrain from a purchase of any kind until you have a genuine need that will define your "use case". It may well be that an Apple device (In addition to my embarrassingly large PC and Server collection, I also have a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPad Mini, and an iPhone.) may suit your anticipated needs; however, any of the "Air" devices are not going to give you speed (no matter how you define "speed"). That simplified equation goes like this: speed = CPU/GPU power + memory + SSD / cooling capacity. MacBook Air products are passively cooled (no exhaust fan(s)), therefore the CPU is not going to be powerful enough to impress you with blazing speed because Apple doesn't want to burn your fingertips or melt your lap (please forgive a little hyperbole and generalization)

Many preachers/teachers use an iPad to preach/teach from in the pulpit as a digital notepad, in my experience. I don't personally know of any who prepare exclusively on an iPad I use mine only for Logos, and primarily for personal devotions; however, I recognize that this is personal preference for me because I have access to a number of more powerful machines to do serious study with.

Bottom Line: It doesn't seem like you NEED a better machine, but you definitely WANT one. I feel you, brother. I'll admit to you, and before the Lord, that I'm a computer hardware hoarder who can't justify retaining/collecting all this stuff. So, after NEED and WANT, we both need to JUSTIFY before the Almighty God of the Universe, our stewardship of the resources He has given us. Finally, at least for me, REPENTING of my selfish immaturity in this area. Bless you as you determine your best and most God honoring course of action.

Praise God I have Surface Pro 9 now and the latest Windows version of Logos. Feel free to chuckle and breathe a sigh of relief. I really wish I had a decent Ipad too but a still small voice (and my wifes louder one) suggest I enjoy what I have. Anyone wanna buy my old Surface Pro 3 which cannot be updated to latest Windows. Perhaps your ministry could use it. If so, I would consider donating it to you.

Kevin thanks. I will be paying on the Surface Pro 9 til Jesus comes back most likely. I have some remorse as I really wanted an Ipad that worked in the pulpit, at Bible study, etc but took advice given here and stayed in Windows land. I am hopeful any new smaller ipad mini in the future would be good enough for reading and highlighting/notes. We shall see. Weigh in if you use Ipad mini with the horrible "Jelly Roll" scrolling now anyone. Greg above has some excellent observations. Everyone else was kind to me in here too...for years actually. Blessings.
