Logos Hangs on MacBook Pro M!

A few months ago I switched from using a Windows machine to a MacBook Pro, M1, 16 GB Ram, 1 TB SSDD. Since switching, I have seen Logos hang more than ever before. I have turned off Antivirus software, I don't open anything else and I still get the SBBOD. I check Activity Monitor and Logos is using 1.3% of the CPU.

I have also noticed that when I first open Logos and click Documents, it takes about 30 seconds for it to populate. Once it does, it works fine.

I never experienced any of this on Windows 11 with a 4 year old Lenovo.

I am curious if others are experiencing this or if I am just lucky.

I have an M1 Macbook Pro 16", and I don't have that issue. A few thoughts come immediately to mind.

    Have you tried reindexing?

How many documents do you have?

Have you checked your internet speed?

One more question: what happens if you turn off WIFI?

I have minimum of 500 documents, I have used Logos since it came out. Hundreds of PB's also. WIFI doesn't change anything, it even does it when I am hardwired. Internet speed is good, reindexing doesn't help. The good news is I work in I.T.  The bad news I haven't been able to find the culprit.   All I can think of is the possibility that even though I have turned all the Avast setting off, maybe just having the software installed in slowing it down.

I think you're just lucky. Smiling.

I don't have the issues you describe. Used to (after L10 was introduced, lots of kill-app).

I'm reluctant to question Logos on the Mac; I'm similar to you ... I came over from Logos on Windows, which seemed bullet-proof for years.  I have a lot of problems with Logos/Mac, but not sufficient to identify (1) the cause, or (2) repeatability.  My current issue is just how fast the M1 can make Verbum disappear (crash).  It's amazing. And who is the famous 'Jenkins'?! From "Volumes/Code/Jenkins/workspace/Logos-Desktop-Mac-Stable/LogosDesktop" in the crash logs.

Basically, I just figure out work-arounds, and keep going.

I have run Logos on an M1 for a couple of years - I have never had any issues. It never crashes and it is very speedy. I assume you have tried reinstalling Logos. Maybe reach out to the Logos tech folks for additional things to try?

It could be related to corrupt preference files, but I couldn't begin to tell you which ones. You might consider reinstalling.

Logos runs really well on M series Macs....do you have a lot of Collections? That can be another performance drag as they are built dynamically...

I am a fairly light user of Logos on the Mac and can't remember the last time I had to restart the machine due to a Logos glitch

I have turned all the Avast setting off, maybe just having the software installed in slowing it down.

I don't know about Avast but just our of interest I did run some Virus etc scanning software for a while. It made a noticeable difference to the speed of the machine when it was running and after a couple of years had only alerted me to 'malware' that would run on Windows but not on the Mac. I uninstalled it and regained my speed.

Is there a reason that you feel the need to have Avast on the machine?

Many don't know, but Apple has quite a sophisticated solution to malware as part of MacOS, that's regularly updated - XProtect Remediator. If interested, this is an excellent article on the history of how Apple has gone about protecting Macs from intrusion...
