Alter Genesis Content

Is the Robert Alter Genesis translation and commentary content identical in his stand-alone Genesis title, his The Five Books of Moses and in his The Hebrew Bible?

And I am still sad that I could not include hyperlinks to those resources in the Logos catalogue! (Yet? Smile )

I would be surprised if it isn't. It was published first. If anything, there might have been some minor errors corrected in the later larger collections of translations. It's common for bible translators to release portions of the work a little at a time and then finally the whole thing. That's what Eugene Peterson did with The Message too.

There is already a request for Alter's The Hebrew Bible over there, and I'm guessing Brad knows already and is one of the 119 people who have voted for it, and that's why he still sad.

There's another broad request for "Books by Robert Alter" in general, with 153 votes, and it's marked as "Planned". But it's been at that status for a long time. I would love some kind of reassurance that they are still working on this and it'll be sooner rather than later, but I know they don't usually reveal such information.

There have been so many requests for so many years for Alter's works in Logos, one has to wonder if either 1) Alter doesn't want his stuff on the Logos platform, or 2) Logos isn't interested in putting Alter's works on their platform. His works are available on Kindle, including the entire translation, so it's not like his works aren't being digitized. I would love to see it.

I know. I've really been wanting to see them in Logos. The request for them on the feedback site says "Planned" but it's been like that for a long time. I have no idea what the hiccup could be in getting these done. Is it a rights issue? Maybe Amazon got exclusive rights for a certain number of years and Logos has to wait until that expires or something.

I guess all we can do is keep hounding them, unless someone from Logos sees this and cares to comment (and is at liberty to say anything).

There is no reason to assume either. Book contracts are complicated things. Since some of these have kindle version, Logos <might> be able to create FLEB versions, but that would not make Logos or (at least some) customer's happy.

I suspect that Logos would like the content but the publisher does not want to license it. There are some out there who will not license to Logos, but I am not privy to the details of those conversations. Since nothing from Norton appears to be in Logos at all, my guess is they might be one of them and that we have not been able to come to an agreement with the publisher to include any of their books.
