Certain notes and highlights not displaying anchors properly in the mobile app

Hello! I'm just getting started with the Logos app both on an iPad and on my Windows PC and have run into a problem.

I'm having an issue when I create a note or a highlight for verses, but the problem only occurs on the iPad and not on the PC. Under certain circumstances (explained below), the note and/or highlight will not show the verse(s) to which it is anchored when viewing the note or highlight in the Notes panel--again, only on the iPad. So, for example, let's say I create a note by highlighting a portion of a verse in the ESV and adding a note to it. When I view that note in the Notes panel on the iPad, it does display the note but simply shows the anchor as "ESV," without any Scripture reference indicated. Likewise, a highlighted portion of a verse in the KJV simply appears as "KJV" in the notes panel. Again, the text of the note does show, and if I tap on, e.g., "ESV" in the anchor, it does take me to the Bible verse and highlight in question. But what this means is that I have a bunch of highlights shown on the left side of the Notes panel with no Bible reference indicated, just the Bible version.

Interestingly, if I select a whole verse by simply tapping anywhere on the verse so that it auto-selects the entire verse, then the note/highlight is created properly; the anchor shows the verse and not the Bible version. If I select that same verse by manually dragging the selection handles, I still have the anchor problem.

This appears to be an issue only with the mobile app, however, because when I look at these same notes in the Windows desktop version, it DOES show the anchor as the Bible verse. Thus, the proper information is there, but it does not display properly on the iPad.

Also, if I create the original note and highlight on the PC, I still have the problem with the anchor not displaying correctly on the iPad and under the same circumstances. So, if I highlight one and only one entire verse on the PC by having it autoselect (i.e., by right-clicking on the verse rather than using the selection handles) it displays correctly on the iPad as well as the PC. If I highlight more than one verse, or just part of a verse, or even a single verse by dragging the selection handles, the anchor information displays correctly on the PC but not on the iPad; the iPad shows the anchor as simply the Bible version (e.g., ESV) without the corresponding verse reference(s).

Any idea what may be going on here? As I said, I'm really new to this software and just figuring it out, so maybe there is something I'm doing wrong. But it doesn't seem as though it should be doing this based on what I have described.

Thanks,

Alan

Hi Alan - and welcome to the forums.

There is a current issue on the mobile app that is being looked at that sounds like the problem you are describing.

Is the Bible you are highlighting downloaded to your iPad? If not, please download it and see if that helps.

Hi, Graham. And thanks for your quick reply.

Yup, the issue indeed occurs when the Bible is not stored locally on the iPad. I just downloaded the KJV to the iPad and now everything displays correctly. At the moment I am simply using the free resources that work with the app, and there is apparently no provision for downloading the ESV. Therefore, the issue remains with that version.

As I am likely going to be purchasing one of your packages (yet to be determined), I'm assuming the ESV will come with that and would then be available to download for local storage on the iPad? If so, that would eliminate the issue for me when that happens.

    Much appreciated,

    Alan

    Glad that was helpful

Yes - some versions are made available for free on mobile for cloud-based use but licensing constraints means we can't download them until we have purchased them.

I believe the ESV is included in all packages so that would be the case.

Incidentally - just to clarify - when you mention "your packages" - most people on the forums are just fellow users. Those who are from Logos have a blue Logos icon under their name.

If so, that would eliminate the issue for me when that happens.

Yes - although hopefully the bug that is causing the issue will be resolved at some point

Thank you, Graham, for the clarification on staff vs. fellow users. I wrongly inferred that you were staff from your statement about the bug being looked into. But this is good to know.

Regardless, you have been most helpful to me.

    Blessings,

    Alan

This fix worked for me when I downloaded the Bible Knowledge Commentary, but not in the cases of the KJV or NKJV

I've just realised that the issue being described here - anchors not showing for highlights in non-downloaded resources - is actually how the app is currently designed.

    Ali clarified this at https://community.logos.com/forums/p/216739/1262486.aspx#1262486

    Apologies for my earlier misinformation.

Please provide a few more details

I've just tried this with a downloaded NKJV and the anchor shows both resource name and reference of the highlight.

I think my problem is the way that text selection works in the mobile app for L10.

If I select from Prov.31:14 the words "She is like the merchant ships bringing her food from afar." I get this dialogue. Note that the verse number was not selected.

    .

Clicking on "Note" in the pop-up menu produces this:

The app interprets my selection as a "Reference Selection," and applies the note not just to the NIV, but to all versified resources.

However, if I reduce the size of my selection to "like the merchant ships...afar." the app correctly interprets this as a "Text Selection," and limits the note to the particular resource (NIV in this case).

Downloading the resource to the iPad seems to enable "Text Selection," but there is still this problem of selecting all but only the text of a verse (not the verse reference), and it's being interpreted by the app as a "Reference Selection."

Apologies for my previous unclarity (for the greatest of these is clarity).

I believe it is working as designed in that if we select the entire verse the app creates a note by reference, whereas if we select a portion of a verse it creates a note by selection.

My point is that it should be possible to quote the entire verse as a "Text Selection", without it's being converted to a "Reference Selection" and applied to all resources.

OK, I solved this one. To do what I was wishing to do (select all the text in a verse and make a note linked to that resource only, not every versified resource), I needed to turn OFF "Smart Text Selection." This is found under the "traffic light menu" (top right) and in the "View Settings" menu item under "Fonts."
