It could be a separate product having an option to link seamlessly to Logos. Needs also a possibility for user defined data and a feature to edit locations and chronology. Such a product could be used by other Bible software users and universities.

Just curious, could someone who suffers from the performance problems of the Atlas tool give a specific example(s) along with how slow it is? For example, bring up this map takes 8 seconds, or move from this map to another, or "bring up this map and it's blurry for x seconds", etc.? The reason I ask, is I have seen the complaints and I may be wrong but it seems Windows-based. Once an example(s) is described I want to try on my Mac, as I have not seen the issue with the (possibly simplistic) way I use the map tool.

Logos offers wonderful resources but, their atlas has proven to be the single biggest frustration I have. Not with content, with the time it takes to render. I realize this is somewhat apples to oranges but, google can provide various high res maps of Mesopotamia in 1 second or less. And of course, theirs are offline also. When using Logos Atlas, I always try to remember to close other apps also.

Not sure specifically what map this is and how you brought it up, that may matter. I brought up the one below, and it was less than a second on my MacBook Pro M2Max. That's a pretty powerful laptop, but the OP claimed one of the most powerful gaming PCs, likely a desktop, so this is probably a more than fair comparison.

If you want to offer some more specific instructions on what to bring up and the steps, I'll duplicate it. But so far this does seem to be a Windows only issue?

I select ‘Show Atlas’ icon (placed on the application toolbar as I use this frequently.)

The ‘Logos Bible Study Atlas’ opens in a floating window.

I filter and select, ‘Four Mesopotamian Kings Invade’

Atlas opens to selection. Slowly.

I elect to d/l every resource possible to avoid potential issues such as this. If I select information on another resource, I can verify that is/was d/l. I don’t however see this same information is available with the Logos Bible Study Atlas. So I just don’t know if this is even an option.

I realize being a high res resource, it’s likely a hog in size but I’ve got the space to hold it and speed its retrieval if in fact it’s not already on my ssd. I do seem to recall that maps and atlases are/could be d/l though. I’m suspecting online access is perhaps involved as I note, “https//….” Is shown on the info page and no d/l info is available.

Again, I know it still shouldn’t take so long to load regardless. Just seeking a possible workaround at this point.

Thanks for your video. That's very nice and fast on your Mac. But that's really bitter for Windows users. I have a NVIDIA RTX 3080 and a 12 core 4.5Ghz CPU and it takes 5-6 seconds to build up. Until I start moving the map and the game starts all over again.

Not just my machine. I searched posts about this issue, found several spanning years. Maybe random. Perhaps some obscure setting I’ve not found. Idk.

I do note however, the many machines much more robust than mine and folks more knowledgeable than me yet still experiencing this.

Anecdotally (not scientific):

I tried this on an aging laptop with a few things open and so-so internet because that is real life. My Atlas opened to a fresh new site at good resolution in a snappy 12 seconds. It took a mere 9 seconds to reload. Which is a good deal faster than reloading a musket.

I would have to be desperate to wait that long for a map that likely wasn't what I wanted, and then reload new ones a few more times until I found what I wanted. But then, I took the time to write this post, so maybe I would!

The Logos online Bible app takes a fraction of that time.

Oh, I almost forgot to add, that when scavenging around for new surprises like "Paul in Troas" or "The Flood Subsides," the maps swirl around and pop right up in 2-4 seconds, which is pleasant enough.

Same here .... win 10 64bit, Logos 26 ... and not necessarily super fast machine. Atlas tool opened same speed as other resources, tools, etc. Switching maps was equally fast and instantaneous

Yes... it's enabled in my Logos settings as well. I've also gone into the Windows graphics setting and tried two different settings there for Logos: 1) Let Windows decide whether to use the onboard GPU or the dedicated GPU. 2) Just use the dedicated GPU for high performance.

The Atlas remains the slowest (barely functional) app/feature I have ever used. Yet I can do video editing, rendering, and playing without a hitch.

You got me thinking, MJ. My laptop has a 4K display... I dropped it down to full HD (1920 x 1080) and the Atlas, while still a tad choppy compared to anything else I do on this laptop, became noticeably faster--fast enough to be what I would call "usable", based on the small usage sample I did after dropping the resolution.

So what "is" the cause of the Atlas problem on my machine? Does my laptop hardware not meet specs? No... it meets specs. Is it the Windows implementation on my machine? I don't think so... no problems with any other apps or app features. Is it Logos as implemented on my machine? I hope not... I've always followed the standard installation and update procedures. Is it perhaps a Logos server issue having trouble with a 4K feed? Hmmmm.

I only played with the Atlas for a couple of minutes after dropping the resolution, so time will tell if it remains consistently faster when only having to feed maps at the lower rez. But at this point, my thoughts lean toward a problem with Logos being able to serve up the Atlas at 4K.

Isn't the atlas still web based, and then loads from the web through the app? If that is the case, wouldn't it have more to do with your internet bandwidth speed than your computer specs?

Yes, it's my understanding the Atlas is still web based.

Our internet speed shouldn't be the problem. We're with Xfinity/Comcast. Our "contracted" download speed is 200 Mbps, but when running speed tests it's typically closer to 225 Mbps. That's more than enough bandwidth for 4K, and we stream 4K movies, 4K YouTube videos, etc., just fine.

So I tend to think it's the Logos server(s) or some fumbling in the Logos app when trying to load it from the web.

But in an effort to contribute what I can, I'll extend my range of testing by installing Logos and checking out the Atlas on a couple more Windows machines, and report back after doing so. It may be a while though as we are in the midst of several house renovation projects, not to mention several annual seasonal tasks that have to be completed before the snow flies in Minnesota.

I have tested LOGOS Atlas on 3 different devices, with different but always fast hardware (Intel, AMD, NVIDIA with hardware acceleration on, Win 10 + 11). The desktop version is very slow everywhere, while the web version is blazing fast everywhere.

Have you tried zooming in and out on the desktop? And if so, is the speed in the Logos desktop app the same as on https://app.logos.com/tools/atlas ?

I opened the web version of the Atlas... and found out that it is impossible to open the Atlas full screen! You can drag it to the left hand side or the right hand side, but it can never fill the window. This means I can't open up Atlas on the Web and view it full screen. It also means I can't view the web app atlas side-by-side with a Desktop window.

If Logos Desktop Atlas is going to be slow, at least make it easier to use Atlas in the web app! Please

I have an XPS 8940 with a 10th generation i7, 16 gigs of RAM, an SSD, and a GTX 2600 Super graphics card. It is a very good computer but not bleeding edge.The web app is marginally faster on zooming, but seems a little worse on bouncing between maps.

I tried the desktop Atlas this morning, in Finland, and it works quite fast on the PC. The max Ethernet speed seems to be 33 Mb/s from the server.

Google Earth seems to be slightly faster, and a commercial vector-based software perhaps slightly slower.

Robert, what do you mean by 'full screen'? Mine (Mac; app.verbum.com) opens, covering all the screen space from the left side to the right side. It's actually quite usable for Bible class (ignoring the lack of detail). I also like being able to (almost) remove both legends.

So, I'm guessing I'm totally misunderstanding.

It took a while, but I'm back with some test results on two new machines. As noted in a previous post, when I cut the resolution on my ASUS 4K screen down to FHD, the Atlas was usable. Since Logos is the only app that's had a response time problem when at a 4K resolution (and only when running the Atlas), I began to suspect the problem was an issue with Logos not providing enough bandwidth for the Atlas to handle 4K.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get my hands on another machine with a 4K screen, so I can't add any results regarding that variable. Perhaps someone else with a 4K machine will be willing to share their experience with the Atlas when they have their screen resolution set to the full 4K.

The two machines I was able to try out are new Lenovo laptops with 13th gen intel processors--a LOQ 15.6" with a FHD screen (1920 x 1080), and a Legion 5i Pro 16" with a WQXGA screen (2560 x 1600). The Atlas speed is fine on both, whether running on the dedicated graphics cards or just the integrated graphics.

If you have a machine with a 4K screen and would be willing to share your experience with the Atlas, it would be appreciated.

If I use desktop app it is fairly quick, only a few seconds to load any map, but sluggish to scroll around. If I use web app it is great.
