Need help in doing "layout"

I apparently am quite dense, but I just can't figure out how "Layouts" work. For instance, I would like to have 3 panes open, with the left side the larger window, and 2 smaller windows on the right. I go to Layouts and clicked on this layout. But nothing happens. I have attempted to drag this layout and nothing happens. I have opened 3 books first and then attempted to click on Layout, with this design and nothing happens. Can someone please explain how to use layouts?

    Charlene,

    Certain layouts work when you have the right amount of windows open when clicking a layout.

    Example: you're not gonna get a 4 paned layout when you have only one window open! [:P]

    So, if you have enough windows open at the time (at least 3 separate windows open) then clicking this layout should do the trick...then you can drag the edges of the windows to whatever width you want.

    Sometimes the layouts are a little slow to appear so give it a long 20 seconds before giving up.
