Default Priorities and Indexes etc

I have noticed that my library defaults to "Enhanced Strong's Lexicon" for Strong's numbers, even though my library has many resources that might be considered preferable.

For Louw Nida numbers, it uses Louw Nida.

I am assuming that unless you configure it otherwise, the software uses default resources for the different type of look-ups? Is this because they want to use common resources that are in the base packages?

This is the index info shown under info for the "Enhanced Strong's Lexicon".

Untitled S1

How would I display all the resources in my library which are indexed with Strong's numbering? And with Louw-Nida numbering.

And if needed, then filter those further down to "Lexicon" type resources?

So what I would have shown in the Library then would then be every available resource which could replace the default.

I'm sure it can be done but I don't know how yet Smile

It is quite logical for the program to show Strongs definitions when you click on a Strong's number and although there are many resources that might be considered preferable for looking up words there is nothing more appropriate for looking up a Strongs Number than Strongs Lexicon.

Personally I would eschew Strongs Numbers and use the 'two finger click' menu and select the 'Look Up' section.

Thanks Mike. I'm still learning my way around the software. The learning curve seems larger once you begin trying to work with it [H]

Your response was not exactly what I was looking for, but I did not fully explain what I was trying to do. I was following the Wiki and the help manual and trying to get a handle on Resource Priorities. So for me this is as much about learning how the software works as actually using it to do productive work.

Yet your reply did sort-of teach me what i wanted to know. I still do not know how (if it is even possible) to find the resources in the Library window. But your picture shows the resources "COED CED8E MWCT ISBE MWCDEE" which was all dictionaries under Look up.

One thing that is still not clear is whether these entries are a complete list of all resources that can be used for that particular type, which in your example would be an English dictionary ... I still do not know, are those defaults ... or does it display the English dictionaries in your Priority list? If I add a new English dictionary, is it going to automatically show up there? I suspect it would ...

In general, you want a Prioritize list with books in the following order for it to work as expected:

    Min
    No.
    Category Library Filter
    5 English Bibles type:Bible lang:English
    5 Greek Bibles type:Bible subj:N.T.-Greek
    3 Hebrew Bibles type:Bible lang:Hebrew
    3 Septuagint Bibles type:Bible subj:O.T.-Greek.
    2 Apostolic Fathers type:Ancient-Manuscript
    2 Apparatus (Bible) type:Bible-Apparatus
    5 Greek Lexicons type:Lexicon subj:Greek
    5 Hebrew/Aramaic Lexicons type:Lexicon subj:(Hebrew, Aramaic)
    5 Bible Dictionaries type:Encyclopedia subj:Bible
    6 Bible Commentaries type:Bible-Commentary

Note 1: The minimum number (No.) of resources is a guide only. Five is usually the maximum number of resources to appear in the Context menu, but you can specify more in case a value is not found in some of your top 5. Passage Guide will list the number of commentaries that you specify and the Parallel Books menu can list all your resources.

Note 2: You can mix Hebrew bibles and Septuagint bibles depending on your preference for Greek or Hebrew in the Old Testament.

Now let's prioritize your Greek lexicons:

I have noticed that my library defaults to "Enhanced Strong's Lexicon" for Strong's numbers, even though my library has many resources that might be considered preferable.

For Louw Nida numbers, it uses Louw Nida.

I have prioritized ESL using Advanced Prioritization as that will ensure it is #1 for Greek Strong's. It will prevent my DBL Greek dictionary (#14) from snagging Strong's numbers whilst ensuring that DBL is #1 for Greek lemmas. Below that (not fully visible) is the Louw Nida. lexicon, which will always attract LN numbers (unique to that resource) and is #2 for Greek lemmas (ignore the Advanced prioritization of Louw-Nida).

If you want to use another lexicon for Strong's numbers then use that in place of ESL.

How would I display all the resources in my library which are indexed with Strong's numbering?

That is not possible in Library. But a little Search trick will do it i.e. search your lexicons with  milestone:(strongs:G1–G5877  OR  strongs:H1–H8679).

    image
ESL has Greek and Hebrew Strong's, so it has many more results than a Greek or Hebrew lexicon.

Thanks Dave for putting that all together. I'm sure I will be referring back to this. There is a lot to learn here, but I will get it in time.

    Worked great!

I assume that keywords like milestone are all documented somewhere ... not that I'm ready for that yet, but where is the best source for documentation?

Looking at what my options are here:

    Milestone

My Observations. Two resources that I expected to be there are not. TDNTA and CNIDNTTE.

TDNTA when prioritized shows up in Lemma search but not Strongs. Interesting.
I guess when it became "abridged" the Strongs had to go.

CNIDNTTE contains Goodrick-Kohlenberger numbers which I mistook for Strongs.
When prioritized, the only context menu it shows up in is Lemma lookup.

See Milestone and other keywords for a reasonable idea in the Search wiki  The Indexes you showed for ESL in your screenshot are also the milestones for that resource. When you right-click a milestone it will be identified as a Reference in the Context menu and  you can select a Search to see the format  e.g. greekGK:"Greek GK #476"  for GK numbers.  Louw-Nida numbers are identified differently, but Search still works.

Hey Dave - is there any chance Apostolic Fathers is now type:Ancient Manuscript? I have a lot of them that seem like Apostolic Fathers, I don't have a single Ancient Apostolic type in my library..?

Correct. I copied that table without noticing, and there are a couple of other mistakes that I fixed.
