Is this a bug in Print Library?

I recently added a collection which contained some books that I already had in my print library. I went to update my library, which I have done previously by going to the library screen and selecting "not on this device" which easily located anything that had not been downloaded.

But this did not work with new books which were already in the Print Library. So I went searching for these new books and this is what I found:

The book has the cloud which says it has not been downloaded. But it does not show up in "not on this device". I went to the Logos website and verified that I now owned the book.

Is this the intended behavior? Maybe there is a better and easier way to identify Print library books which are also owned in Logos?

I may have just found a workaround to my question.

I can select "In Print Library" and "License: Permanent" at the same time.

So a person could have the resources in Logos and still have them designated as in print library.

Now I wonder if it would have downloaded them if I had the settings set to automatically download books?

Just a few comments (PL = Print Library, Cloud = Books "Not on this device")

Cloud Books will not appear in Collections
Owned Books can be added to PL (whether in Cloud or not)
Print Library books will not appear in Collections unless already Owned/Downloaded
Print Library will not show books with Temporary licence as available to purchase

The "new" Owned books were already in PL, but
they were not in the collection so you went to Library to Download them?
But they were not in the Cloud even though the PL showed a 'cloud'?

Maybe there is a better and easier way to identify Print library books which are also owned in Logos?

PL also showed a Cart which meant it was not owned! If you had a license, it would/should show an unlocked Padlock

So, is this your main problem?

Yes. PL does things the wrong way around as I don't see why I need Library to easily find items that are in PL!!!

It would be nice if I could get that setting to download books that I don't own just by putting them in PL[:O] It's usual to buy them first....

Yes I think that sums it up. Except that they were "in the cloud" as it indicated. They opened in cloud mode just fine. There was no message saying there was no license. So that aspect of it works fine.

Books that were previously in PL, when purchased, did not show up in "Not on this device", which is how I had been isolating new books to download them.

Since I posted, I have also discovered that you cannot add a book to PL if you already own it in Logos. I found a workaround for that issue by deleting it from current device, adding to PL, and then re-downloading.

These are not huge problems, I am just figuring out how the system works. Now that I know better how it works, I can work around it. But I do think it is a bug that the newly added (and not downloaded) books did not show up in "Not on this device".

I'm going to put the update settings on my other computer (a mac vs Windows 10) on full automatic and see if they download automatically.

But the store said "You already own the product" (in John's second screenshot).

It seems there's a bug somewhere if the store says he owns the product but PL says he doesn't.

My other computer that was set to update all automatically did download the new titles. But after it finished, my total resource count and "Permanent License" counts do not match on the two different computers.

I am going to try rebuilding the index on both and see if that fixes it. It is still possible that the problem is isolated to just my Windows installation ...

Print Library is not intended to assist you with downloading/installing new books, even if you purchased them through PL. Why are you adding Owned books to PL?

You are making a lot of work for yourself when workarounds are not needed. What is your setting for "Download New Books"?

This was never my plan. I had the books in PL BEFORE I purchased a collection that included them. So I figured the logical thing to do would then be to remove them from the PL. I was thinking that the Logos software would have done that automatically, or given a notification. But when I checked, I found that it was still in the PL, and had not downloaded.

After I began trying to figure out what was going on, then I downloaded the book (just one of them). Removing it was my test to see if it would then cause "Not on this device" to show this removal accurately, which it did not. So now I know that I cannot rely on "Not on this device" to be accurate if PL is involved. And this is definitely a bug IMO. But it is easily worked around, and will not affect most users.

What is your setting for "Download New Books"?

Everything is set to "YES" on both computers now. But it was not when the issue occurred. That is how I discovered the problem. Somehow the new resources that were already in PL did not get into the collection "Not on this device" and that is why they did not download when I downloaded manually.

If both computers match after reindexing I'll be happy to ignore it. The mac is 97% complete now, and Windows is at 30% [H]

Yes. I was explaining the implication of the Cart symbol, and the remainder of my remark was "If you had a license, it would/should show an unlocked Padlock"

It seems there's a bug somewhere if the store says he owns the product but PL says he doesn't.

I spent 4 hours rediscovering PL and it has a few other fundamental bugs e.g. I select 6 books and it tells me that 3 were selected. But I haven't see the "Cloud" symbol. I will raise a bug report.

OK, but why was it a problem when you subsequently thought that Owned books could not be added to PL? Given that they can be in PL, why should Logos want to remove newly purchased books from PL? It is entirely up to you to manage PL books by adding and removing as you wish; they are not intrinsically connected to the function of downloading/installing. Think of Print Library as a collection of books that could be on your device or in the Cloud, or in a physical library somewhere.

My advice would be to remove all books from PL and forget about using it until you have mastered the function of downloading/installing.
