Idalia paid my home a visit this week, we had about 31 inches of nasty food water (with sewage) come into our homes. I’ve thrown away a heart breaking amount of books.

thankful that most of my books are in logos. Because there have been 8 trash cans full of dead tree format so far, and I may have just as many left to toss.

awrvepro says ALL the books have to go. But I’ve only thrown out the wet ones so far.

Sorry to read this, but i am glad you and your family made it through the storm. I lived in So Fla for 43 years and went through to many of them, i think it was 2004-2005 when 4 different storms came across the state.

Sorry you went through that. I have not, but people close to me have, and it's a very difficult experience.

I am glad you have most of your books in Logos. People will often point on this forum the risks with having an all electronic library; this is a (painful) illustration of one of the risks with physical books.

I remember that year well. stayed high and dry, but we spent a month without power.

1993 was the worst flooding (here), and this the second worst, and probably hermine from 7 years ago (2016 I think?) the third worst. I think this is the fourth or fifth time I've had water reach the bottom of my house, but only the second time it's come in side.

The way I'm looking at it all is this; I gave it all to the Lord, so it's His. While I do like them, and want to use them as long as I can, If He chooses to take it back then that's ok, it's His any way. Same with anything else - car, home, and everything.

I’m sorry to hear that! We’re praying for Hurricane Lee 🌀 to dissipate or else get lost in the ocean 🌊 if it hits the East Coast it might do so by next Wednesday or Friday as a category 5. Hopefully 🙏 it’ll go away. Luckily I only have 2 small boxes of books. The other 20K + are safe in my pocket and laptop 💻

When I saw the post title I was prepared for a chuckle much to my surprise, sadness. When my family was living in southern Jersey. One fateful night we got 13" of rain in hours. This overwhelmed the pump in the basement causing it to pump that amount into this part of our house. We awoke to the children frantically announcing the flood in our basement. We lost irreplaceable family photos among other items.

Although we received a pittance from FEMA, we weren't in the flood plain and had no insurance to cover the damages. Sorry for your loss, man. Really.

The first thousand or so were soaked with water and sewage. The second thousand were on the next shelf up, and while they didn't get soaked, because of the moisture, and humidity they now have mold and mildew issues, and were starting to stick together.

The third shelf of books is spread out at my parents house in their air-conditioning. I'm out of cool dry storage for the fourth shelf of books. So I'm picking through those now, and anything I can't live without will likely end up in the trash as well. Even those (and the ones at my parents house), its a long shot that they will be ok according to the water remediation folks.

I've set aside anything collectible or with some kind of sentimental value, and all the commentaries that didn't get wet. Otherwise the rest of them are pretty much gone. ~4000 books across 15 book shelves with about 5-600 saved.

Thankfully yes! Family, and the dogs are ok. I lost 3 sheep out of 38, 2 of which we had decided not to keep any way. so it could have been a lot worse.

Fema is fema. ~1500$ for ~2000 books, an air-conditioner, hot water heater, dishwasher, and so forth. We shall see about help for the home repairs.

May or may not be money there for that, but if its anything like what they did for my books, I'll not be holding my breath.

I'm thankful you and your family (including the furry members) are safe. I only had deal with being without power for 16 hours so I'm thankful and praying for those who were impacted worse.

Update: Contractors say 37, 32, and 30k in repairs. Which is more than the home would cost to replace. However, I am grandfathered into some county codes with my current home, replacing it would cost far far more (80-100k) as a result.

The 30k will lift it up higher than flood zone though. Which is nice.

I will say despite losing most everything, Its been a big blessing. Sometimes being a pastor with the same group over the long term feels like a bunch one sided relationships. This has given my vary generous people an opportunity to be a blessing towards me, and some of their sacrificial giving has made me weep.

I think I needed this, and didn't know it.
