Is there a way to tag a verse with my own tagging and then filter baesd on my tagging in the Bible

Hi Everyone,

Good day!

I would like to seek your help if there is an easy way to tag verses in the Bible using my own tagging as i read through the whole Bible (i do the same when i read my Bible with a pen in hand always), and later to easily display all verses under any of my tags.   For example, i have tags on different doctrine (trinity, sovereignty of God, Davidic covenant, sin etc.) , i will tag verses, or phrases with the above tags, and later i can filter using the tags says (sovereignty of God), seeing all the verse that i tagged, and do further in-depth study on those doctrines etc.   This is similar to the idea of Thompson Chain-Reference (which i also use in my study), but i want to develop my own tags and then use other tools to complement my study.

I saw a previous thread back in 2020 on the same question, using 'highlight a passage', then add 'tag', then filer, but the process was quite cumbersome, especially i may tag multiple words or phrase within one verse. There won't be enough highlights color for the many many tags i use.    Just want to seek the community's help to see if there is any new features in Logos 10 that can accomplish this goal.

By the way, anyone knows if Logos is bringing in the latest Thompson Chain-Reference Bible.   I have the old version that has the outline and the topic, separately, but will be very helpful if the topics will be shown besides the Bible verse just like the paper version is.

Thanks very much everyone for your help!

Benny

    1. Do you tag via the Notes tool e.g. select text, then "Add a Note" from the Context menu and create a tag?
      1. the Note "highlight" is usually one color, matching the Note Icon
    2. Do your tags have a hierarchy e.g. do you tag  doctrine-trinity, doctrine-sovereignty-of-god or just trinity, sovereignty-of-god?
    3. Is it important to have separate "highlight" colors for your tags?
      1. you may have been alluding to Labels (from the 2020 thread), but one highlight style can cover as many tags as you choose and they can be hierarchical.

    Hi Dave,

    Thanks for your help!

    1) I haven't tried to tag using the Notes tool, as it seems to be not as direct and quick as i hope to do

    2) and 3):   I categorize them, this is what i create so far using the highlighting tool:

I found that using the Highlightilng tool to tag verse, paragraph is quick and direct, and what i hope to achieve, but the problem now is, after i tag the different verses, when i try to display all the verse i have tagged throughout the whole Bible, say on 'Trinity - Father', i don't know how to do it..  I If i can do that, then that will be 100% what i want to do.    So far i found out i can filter based on my Highlighting group called 'Doctrines.  I can display all highlighted verse under all the 'highlights sytle' under 'Doctrine', but i don't know how to only display the verse tagged for any particular sytle say only show all the highlighted verse under ' Trinity - Father'.

Thanks very much for your help!

Looks like the screenshot of the highlighting group 'Doctrine' i created is not showing up in my post...  but here is what i create:

    Church-Baptism

    Church-Elders

    Church-Gatherings

    Church-Lord's Supper

    Church - Worship

    Covenant - Abrahamic

    Covenant - Adamic

    Covenant - Davidic

    Covenant - Mosaic

    Covenant - Noahic

    God's Attribute - Righteousness

    God's Attribute - Sovereignty

    Salvation - Adoption

    Salvation - Atonement

    Salvation - Gospel

    Salvation - Messiah

    Salvation - Plan

    Trinity - Father

    Trinity - Son

    Trinity - Holy Spirit

    Trinity

just for examples.. and then i tag words, phrases, verse, or paragraph using these highlight styles (each group with different background color), and i wish i can then filter and display only all highlights for say..... Trinity - Father, and then all verses i highlighted with 'Trinity-Father' will display.

    See https://wiki.logos.com/Screenshot (Amber is best).

For highlights, Search for highlight:"Trinity - Father"  or highlight:Trinity  etc.

You have restricted your options somewhat as you can't easily search for all your "Trinity - "  highlights.

But you can use highlight:Doctrine/*  to find all your highlights for the Doctrine palette.

    Thanks a lot Dave!

Yes, I tried and i can filter based on my highlights.    You are correct i cannot filter using 'Trinity'.   In this case, do you have suggestion that i should do the highlight style differently?  Or i should use other Logos function to achieve the same result  ( tagging Bible verse or phrases and then filter and display the results for specific tags or tagging group) ?

I was trying to display the highlights in the notebook but doesn't seem there is a way to filter based on the highlight tag  inside the notebook.   The current way of using Highlight and the search based on highlight is the closest i can get so far.  if there is a way to filter based on the group of tags (e.g. 'Trinity' , that will be perfect!)

Otherwise, I am still very happy as i can start study and tag for future in-depth study and re-study!

    Thanks again for your help!

In Notes you can use the sidebar Filter to show Highlights.

Then you can either add a Tag or add a Label (on the right):

    image

If you choose the latter you have more work:

    image

But you can use the label: search  to find all or part of your Doctrine highlights in your books e.g.

label:Doctrine  ---> to find all your highlights, where Doctrine is the Label name you enter above.

label:(Doctrine AND topic:Trinity AND subtopic:Son) —> will find your Trinity - Son highlights, for example. Whilst

label:Doctrine:topic:Trinity   ----> will find all your "Trinity - xxx"    highlights in the resource

-- but it is more work entering an Attribute name like topic + a Value  like Trinity and doing the same for Attribute subtopic.

If you choose to Tag the highlights then you only enter e.g. Trinity - Son.

A Docs Search for mytag:Trinity will find all your "Trinity - xxx" highlights in the Notes tool. Otherwise search for mytag:"Trinity - Son"

Whichever way you choose, you should think about renaming the "Trinity" highlight style to be more specific  e.g. "Trinity - All".

    Hi Dave,

Really appreciate for your detailed explanation and options.  Thanks very much for taking the time to answer my questions.  I will take some time and  try the various options and see which way works best for me and most efficient.

    Thanks very much!
