David Friedrich Strauss called the doctrine of the Holy Spirit the "Achilles heel" per an article I read. I searched for the following terms. I cannot get anything. Does anyone have any hits?

When you're searching for something you DON'T quite know how to describe, it's best to start general, and then after looking thru your results, narrow it down.

When you're searching for something you DO know how to describe, it's best to begin with the most unique term, and then broaden the search as needed.

In the 'achilles' case, it's the first principle.  I used  the search, argument NEAR "holy spirit" (argument being close to 'achilles heel').  Surprisingly there's lots of arguments!  I could next narrow it down, maybe with 'weak argument' or similar.

Coincidentally (your other thread regarding Epicureans, and this one on the Holy Spirit):

"Second Peter insists that the prophets neither invented their oracles nor fabricated interpretations of their visions, since they spoke under the guidance of the Holy Spirit (vv. 20–21). This argument could be directed against an Epicurean skepticism concerning all oracles or against claims on the part of the false teachers to divine inspiration." (Fortress Commentary, 'Text in Its Ancient Context').

"If myth is ideology in narrative form, then scholarship is myth with footnotes." B. Lincolm 1999.

Sure. "Achilles heel" NEAR Strauss seems to be the best fit in terms of precision (weeding out false positives") and getting all the hits - authors are rarely called by their full name with two first names (he will be cited either as Strauss or as D.F. Strauss) - Strauss probably referred to the Holy Spirit (or, depending on translation, the "Holy Ghost", or sometimes "he/him" or "it") more than once, but "Achilles heel" sounds very precise.

It seems that Strauss made this reference in a 1840 German language book "Die Christliche Glaubenslehre" Vol I page 136.

Have joy in the Lord! Smile

Thanks Mick. This is wonderful. I needed it to cite the phrase.
