Does the Search NEAR Not Work with Footnotes?

Maybe this is already well-known, except to me. Berean Study Bible (BSB) has a footnote on "Epimenides of Knossos" and I wanted to confirm the estimated date. So I did a search using 'NEAR' using a copy-text from BSB. No BSB to be had.

That didn't turn out well, so I switched to 'AND'. Much better. Even BSB. As far as I can see 'NEAR' doesn't look at footnotes? Latest macOS and Verbum. And yes, I know Crete works better than Knossos. Still, my good friend 'NEAR' is headed for the trash can?

The structure of notes in relationship to the text make "correcting" this a major overhaul in their storage scheme. It is not a simple matter of writing a bit of code. Decisions that seemed reasonable two decades ago come back to haunt you. The other albatross the programmers are stuck with is using bible milestones for commentary making it "impossible" to separate the author's translation out as a bible when embedded in a commentary. Of the two, the latter is more of a problem for me personally than the former. But for both, I have sympathy for the coders.

I don't. What are we talking ... 15 years of stupidity (me trusting them). I guess fate has delivered our diviner on the west coast of Australia (and Graham's excellent memory).

Then, there's the 'other' issue, more obvious. The design ignored the product ... their product mix has a large number of footnotes, often lengthy, so much, that on the mobile, they demand creative display. But they didn't plan for highlighting, notes, and so forth. I wonder how their 'summarize'er' will work? Ignore the footnotes too?

So, no, I'm unimpressed (with them, not you).

Don't be too hasty. Proximity (incl. NEAR) does not work within footnotes. It will work if one word is in surface text. And WITHIN will work, provided you use CHARS as the unit e.g. gluttons WITHIN 3 CHARS Epimenides (because it counts space, punctuation, and footnote markers).

WORDS looks at the next surface word i.e. gluttons WITHIN 1 WORDS this.

You must have moved? Or more likely my memory is poor. But yes, NEAR sort of works and that's part of the problem. Indeed one of my search panels specifically pulls surface text to avoid footnotes. The visual is one foot stuck in the muck. Two not supported. Luckily Logos isn't my primary software. 'Sort of' is fine for full-time Logosians.
