continual hanging: A-19.1

I open the program and opens fine, but shortly after opening the
program, it will hang. Sometimes this will last for 10 or 20 minutes
(time varies) then start working for a very short period of time (maybe a
couple of minutes) then hang again. It continues to do this. It does
not show that it is downloading anything or indexing. It makes the
program totally unusable. I finally got tired and did a force quit. Saved the logs but when I tried to upload them I got this message:
Sorry, there was a problem with your last request!
Either the site is offline or an unhandled error occurred. We
apologize and have logged the error. Please try your request again or if
you know who your site administrator is let them know too.
I will try and upload the logs later on if needed.

Did you zip the logs prior to trying to post them? And they are needed. The log files and a detailed explanation of what you are doing when it occurs so we can try to reproduce. Thank you.

Tommy,
I just tried to upload them 2 more times and got the same error message. It is the file archive.zip but the size is rather large 6.3 megs. It contains the 3 files:
Console Messages.log size 842 KB and compressed is 94 KB
Indexer.log size 15 KB and compressed is 1 KB
Logos4.log size is 26,346 KB and compressed is 6,027 KB.
Is there some other way to send them to you?

If you have a gmail account you should be able to upload it in Google docs.
http://docs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=50092
Otherwise i can't think of a way. If you can reproduce it, can you do that and see if those files are smaller? I think the size might be due to how long you have been running Logos 4 as that is the larger of the three. You should be able to post the other two compressed.

Tommy,
I have it uploaded to my Google docs.
Here is the link to use:
I think I have it set up properly (I hope I do, I hope I do...) to share and you should be able to download it.

Got it. Strangely though it was only 5mb. Anyway, I realized that you never answered one of my questions. What is it you were doing when it hangs? Are you running much else whilst this goes on outside of Logos4? thanks.

Tommy,
I started the program and let it alone for a few minutes, then it started hanging. Would start back and was able to pull up my library, hanged again. After a while, it started back, so I opened KJV in a floating window and hung again. I noticed it came back a few other times and would hang up again, but did not do anything else with it (too frustrating to do anything with it when it will hang for 10-20 minutes at a time and only allow you to do something for maybe a couple of minutes---I was hoping it would work itself out but after a few hours, I did a force quit and did the logs then).
During this time I was running Firefox, Word, Excel, Skype, Adium, and ITunes (I think that is all the programs I ran). Computer is running OS X, 10.6.3, is a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB ram. If you need anything else, let me know, and thank you for all your help on the forum.

Michael:
Our lead dev was kind enough to look at the logs for you. He said there is a good amount of sync data being pulled down which is probably contributing to your slow down.
I would let Logos 4 alone when you open it next time. You can see it if you open the Logos4 logs file the next time you open Logos 4 it will open the Console application and you can observe the Logos4 activity. Look for "SyncManager."
You may also see a spike in your Network usage in Activity Monitor. In Activity Monitor there is a button at the bottom that says "network" that will display your network usage. But syncing a bunch of content will definitely make Logos 4 slower.

Hi Tommy,
Tell the lead dev, thanks. I started the program about 5:30 last night and simply let it sit without doing anything to it. When I came into the office this morning the program had crashed (about 4:00 from what I could tell by the logs). I restarted the program (about 8:15) and again am letting it sit since as I look at the logs it is still doing the sync (and from the time stamp in the logs, it was doing the sync when it crashed). So my question is, how long should the sync take? Also will opening the windows Logos in Parallels affect the sync?
Thanks again for all your help and the great work the Logos for Mac team is doing.
One suggestion: Since doing the sync takes so long and makes the program almost unusable, why not have an icon show that it is syncing? This might prevent people like me from getting too impatient and doing a force quit on the program.

Did you pull the logs from the Log folder after it crashed and before restarting? If so could you post them? If not that is fine. I don't know how long the sync will take, it takes as long as it takes from the user data/changes you have made on one computer in Logos4 to travel from our servers to your computer. So like downloading speed of this is a combination of your internet speed and the amount of sync data. There is indicator on the WIndows version for the sync indicator, it just hasn't yet been integrated into the Mac version.
I would imagine that making any changes (notes, highlights etc,.) would add eventually require new sync data to be added from one side (Mac or Windows versions of Logos4) to the other. However after the initial sync I am not sure if it wants to sync everything every time. I need to ask Dave (Development Lead) about that. I'll get back to you when I find out.

Tommy,
I did not pull the logs after that crash but started it back, and let it run for over 24 hours. It looked (from the log files) that it had finished syncing (had not done anything with it prior to this time), so I typed in a passage (Col. 2:9) in the go bar. It brought up the layout, I clicked on one of the commentaries which it brought up without any problem, then scrolled to verse 7, then started to scroll back to verse 8 and the program crashed. The archive file is over 16 megs so I uploaded it to Google docs. Here is the link:

Hope it helps.

Ok, jumping into the middle of this to ask: how do you get to this sync manager function or the one that will show the activity of the L4 Mac?
0 -
Mark,
If I am understanding your question correctly: I opened the log files themselves to see what the program was doing in the background. The log files are found in: MacHD/users/[your user name]/library/application support/Logos4/logging. Open the file Logos4.log and you can see what is taking place. If I misunderstood your question, the please ask again.

Tommy,
I just realized that those logs are incorrect. I did not save the new console messages (and I have already re-opened the program). Maybe the other files will help though.

Thanks, Mike.....You heard correctly and I found it! You've successfully guided a non-techy to his goal!

Tommy,
Here are the logs from today. Opened the program, let it sit for a few minutes then opened a workspace (created from the windows side), scrolled a couple of verses, then it hung. Waited a few hours then force quit.

Did you get the logs from Google Docs that I posted Saturday (May 8)?

I did not see the logs on Saturday. I don't work Saturdays. I did though see them Monday.
Could you post your layouts.db file? IT is in your /Logos4/Documents/Uniquefolder/layoutmanager/ Dev might need it for the case.
0 -
Tommy,
You mean they allow you to have Saturdays off??? I thought you were expected to work 48 hours a day, 14 days a week, and 730 days a year. Then in your spare time you were suppose to be on call for every sniffle and whim of those of us on the forums. <G>
Seriously, sorry for my impatience. You have been very helpful to me and so many others here on the forums. Thank you!
Here is the layouts.db file and if there are any others you need, please let me know.

Posted the bug report. Either a developer or I (when I find out anything) will be back with findings or questions.

Michael:
Also, it looks like it is trying to sync a lot of data again. Did you change a number of things on the Windows side prior to the last log file you gave me?
0 -
Tommy,
If I changed anything on the windows side, it would have only been a change in 1 of the Layouts but nothing else.
I have noticed as I looked at the logs, that every time I open the program it syncs a ton of material and if I leave it running, it seems to continue to go back over and re-sync them multiple times.

Tommy,
I opened the program last evening and simply allowed it to run and do the updates and then an index. I am not sure if I changed pages on the homepage or not, but that would have been the most I did. When I came in this morning, the program had crashed. Here is the link to the logs (on Google Docs again). (I left the older archive up and gave these the name archive - 5-13-10.zip.
