Layout, Opened Books and Library

Greetings,

Maybe this topic is discussed, but it seems that there are too many to research. So, I'll ask.

Sometimes in my layouts, I have opened several books, maybe like 30 books. I'm trying to find out how I can see a listing of my opened books in a particular layout without having to use Bibliography. Because I want to go the book directly by clicking on it, if possible from the library.

Maybe there is a way from the library to filter all opened books for the current layout.

So, my question: "Is there a way to list all opened books in a particular layout, which I can open by clicking on the title of the book directly to bring the book to the top of the window?" (Sometimes when there are many books open, they are hidden behind other tabs).

I do not want to use the Bibliography listing, I cannot use it to open a particular book.

I can't think of any realistic way of doing this - though I very much see how it might be helpful.

I don't think there is a mechanism in the library to filter to just show open books. You can do a Books Search for all open books so you could search in those for, for example, the letter a which would give you a list of all the books. And you could click on one of the search results to go to that book.

There are two problem with this approach, though:

Clicking it would change your position in the book to the search result
You would see search highlights throughout the book

But I can't think of any better mechanism at the moment.

Hi Graham...

Guess what? Your idea does work. For my purposes, it works like a wonder. I can even open the book in two ways. By the link and by the link in a separate window. And when I hit the "down" arrow, it can take me to a specific part of the book based on the Large text titles. And for my purposes, it's great... Very interesting ...So, I thank you for this idea.

Now, I'm still waiting for Logos to implement "Bookmarks". I've been asking for them now for the past 10 years. No one has been able to provide any practical solution on how to come back to a book weeks later to the place where I was reading... Maybe you might have an idea for this question...

Oh yes, I'm looking for a "two click solution"...if possible.

On the Mac press <shift, option, command, and the number 1> to mark your place in the book. Then to open to that spot again press <command 1>.

I'm sure there is a PC equivalent.

Hi Bmickey...

I did make a type of short cut by pressing the keyboard "Z". I had to build the shortcut. It will hold the spot, but when I open the book later in the future, it does not bring me to that spot. If there is a PC equivalent to your solution, I do not know how to find it...Logos seems to "not want" to produce a bookmark function at all... Not sure why. Either way, thanks very much...

If anyone reading this knows the PC equivalent of the above solution, please share... Maybe, just maybe, after 10 years of supplications to Logos, this solution might fulfill my requests... Miracles are possible... Amen.

I have tried "Quick Links", but as I remember, it did not do what I wanted. You see, sometimes I have over 30 books opened because I am studying and reading some topic with all these books in different places... You know, it's like having many books open to different spots but all saying something relating to the topic in study.

So, at the end of the day, when I close the books, I would like to have all 30 bookmarks accessible at one click. Quick links, if not mistaken, has only 9 quick links. I've tried several methods, including clippings, a Z keyboard (which I had to create), a highlight color, a favorite, and other methods. All good when you have only 5 books or so opened. But when I have over 30 books opened, the game changes to a whole different level.

Maybe I should submit my request to Logos as a formal request:

1. All BM should be a separate tab in a separate window. So, when I decide to go back to this book I read a month ago, the BM is there.

2. I do not need to have a layout opened.

3. The BM should have the name of the book and the date last visited and the heading of the place of research.

4. A color coded BM will indicate topics. (Blue: theology; Red: salvation; Green: Apologetics) These are examples. So at a glance I can judge what the BM is about.

5. Of course, if the book is closed, it will open the book at the spot of the BM. If the book is opened at a different place, it will bring me to the spot of the BM.

6. Because it is in a separate tab in a window, I should be able to export my BMs listing. I can see the title of the book, the page and the heading of the place of the last reading... In this way, I can see where I am in my topic in research in the particular book.

7. Oh yes, I should be able to delete any BMs.

8. Almost forgot: I should be able to have more than one BM in one book. As much as I need.

If your open books, etc are part of that layout, you would need to run "update layout" before closing the layout. The "update active layout" command saves the currently open layout in the exact status it currently has, e.g. all books are saved in their current place. When you then open this layout next time it will open in the position and status you saved with the update command. Perhaps this helps ?

right now I have a layout that has 125 books opened

Small potatoes, Al. Joking.

I have over 150. The only way I could handle it, is I tag my resources by layout 'level' (level-1 is the layout itself, level-2 is volumes it automatically brings in like commentaries, level-3 is common monographs and journals, and level-4 is the kitchen sink.

Put Bibliography in a small tile, where Information, Highlighting and other tools will open (I drag them to the RHS if needed).

I do not want to use the Bibliography listing, I cannot use it to open a particular book.

I don't understand that as double-clicking a citation will open the book.

Use Favorites.

Drag the book tab into an appropriate Favorites folder. That way you can have the same book marked for different dates (in different folders).

But it is good practice to also have a named layout and update that regularly (one click from a shortcut), and use Program Settings to open the Most Recent Layout (local) when you restart Logos (in case you miss a manual update of your books).

Well, after reading all the suggestions, and some research, I believe I have found a pragmatic solution. (Not perfect).
Someone outside of Logos did help me.

However, Mr. Graham Criddle's suggestion is the one right now I'm using. Works like a charm.

But I must first use it first and then I will share with you all...

Oh yes, Logos did not help me. But no problem.
