Doubled notes after synchronization

I was having problems synchronizing between my desktop and laptop. Basically, the laptop wheel would run for a long time followed by the yellow triangle and the "unable to synchronize" message. After a level two Logos tech (Sarah P) changed things, the synchronization wheel will now eventually stop spinning; however, all my notes (and I have hundreds and hundreds) are doubled.

OK, I thought, I'll wait until release c and then I can sort the notes canonically, make them compact, and then delete the duplicates. I tried this on the desktop, but the changes did not sync. Basically, some things sync (added books), some things don't (deleting notes), and some things sync improperly (the notes doubling).

Other than exorcism, does anyone have any ideas?

YES - Ask Logos for the ability to export our user-content out to files on the disk.

Then delete them in Logos, and import back the ones you need.

Short of Logos giving us back control of our own content, ask Sarah to fix it maybe.

(For now, if you delete one, you might risk deleting BOTH copies. With the Logos application not running, take a backup copy of the notes database. Even if you can't directly use it, you will have more recovery options later if all turns bad.)

Having reviewed all the pig-Latin ritual books, I haven't found the proper computer-exorcism ritual. Perhaps if you reverted to an abacus ...[:P]

Okay, seriously are these notes that you imported from L3 or are they notes you made in L4? My thinking is that if you could delete your L3 notes and reimport them, you should import only one copy. If you got duplicates on the import, you could send the source (L3) file to Logos for analysis.

For standard purposes, you don't. Jim was making a point via sarcasm - since you are new to the forums, the reference was not clear to you. Now, I'll admit to starting with a bit of humor but the actual advice is serious.

Some are L3 notes, but probably a couple of hundred are not. To make things even more interesting, after another sync attempt, I have have four of many of the notes. Might I have any luck just uninstalling Logos from the laptop completely, deleting the extra notes from the desktop, then re-installing and synching?

Is this sync stuff working for most of you? Layouts, notes, everything matching perfectly?

NOT AT ALL TRUE.

I really want you to take a backup of your Notes and related data, given you have so many.

Make the backup just in case. At worst, you waste a little disk space. At best, your notes might be better protected.

Your data will be in a path like C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Logos4\Documents which on my system is under 5 MB.

Note that "AppData" is a hidden directory. You will need to turn on the option in Windows to show you hidden directories.

To remind: All the files under the directory are in an "internal" format that is private to the Logos4 application. It is not expected that you can directly access or use the contents. Saying that, there are ways to read some of whats in there, but all I'm suggesting is you make the backup before attempting whatever recovery methods others might suggest. In the event all turns bad, it might be possible to extract some or all of your notes from the "backup" if they are important enough to you.

As commented above, any notes you imported from L3 are still protected back in L3 assuming you still have them there. Any changes you made since, are of course only in L4.

If you delete a Note in L4, the copy saved at the Logos servers is deleted too, hence my suggestion to make the backup before attempting to solve whatever is wrong.

I was not really kidding about asking Sarah either. Maybe she will remember something specific she tried or changed, and that knowledge will help with the recovery effort. Phone and ask if she is working. If yes, maybe she can return the call when she becomes free from other support calls.

EDIT: There is a wiki posting about backup/copy of user files but I can't find it just yet. Someone will maybe post it here soon ...

My apologies for misunderstanding you. I made some false assumptions reading your instructions, reading more into the opening "ask Logos" than you intended. This seems to be an open mouth - insert foot type of night.

Yes, for the first bit, Logos really needs to let us export our data to files. I would love commands such as:

Set exportdir to "c:\Logos4\Exports
Export Notes
Export Collections
Export Prayers
Export All

And of course, Imports for all above.

But, until that time, I think its useful to take backups of the Logos data directories. Maybe excluding the 100 GB resources one.

We don't have a great recovery story for the backup, other than to treat it as a fresh install to a 2nd PC, and follow those guidelines. My main concern with that is the sync rules are not clear to us as users. For the example in this thread: How is it possible to recover these 100s of Notes without data loss. How to take advantage of knowning Logos has a copy on their servers. How can we control the sync direction. How can we "clean up" the local copies and download the saved set. Can we be sure the Logos servers have all of them? Can we delete one, knowing it wont delete both?

If we could export/import our data to files, this whole problen becomes rather simple.
