Logos Resources on External Drive

Is it possible to have the Logos application on my laptop hard drive but the Logos4 resources file (in Library Support on my Mac) on an external USB flash drive. Although I have a SSD 256GB drive, the drive is not enough to hold my Logos library. No, taking media (images, video, music) off my internal drive is not an option. I have two things which consume hd space on this computer: Zotero and Logos.

For further background, the problem is that, though I have 20–40GB of free space, every time Logos needs to index, it requires around 20–40GB of free, temporary space. I have to delete or temporarily transfer files off the computer and then bring them back after the index is successful. Last time I did this, I did not realize the file transfer failed and I lost significant files.

Be aware that Logos searches and indexing will slow noticeably, and resources in your layout could respond slowly (especially RI's). An external SSD would be better and a 1 TB internal SSD even better!

True! However, since 2016, Mac laptops have non replaceable SSD’s. Even <If> the user’s SSD is replaceable, it might be better to replace the whole device.

I have logos and verbum both on 4 tb external HD with no loss on performance - have had this setup for years.

Your performance might be acceptable to you, but the best performance will still be on an internal drive with a fast SSD.

I believe performance will have a lot to do with operating equipment- both programs are operating no difference that when they were on my 1tb internal drive

I would not recommend the whole resources folder as it may be best for some to keep the indexed folder and other commonly used application files on the local machine and only move the actual folder with the resources to an external drive. This will really help with functionality, queries, etc of using Logos to keep the indexes and app files on the local machine. This is my setup. (Actually, I have moved 2 folders)

I moved these two folders:

1) ~/Library/ApplicationSupport/Logos4/Data/*/ResourceManager/Resources

2) ~/Library/ApplicationSupport/Logos4/Documents/*/GuidedLearning/Thumbnails

Note: The * is because the folder name there is random characters and if you were to put this into your terminal:

cd ~/Library/ApplicationSupport/Logos4/Data/*/ResourceManager/

It would bring you to the ResourceManager folder.

The second folder is because it is a folder of over 20,000 thumbnail images that takes up 3.87 GB of HD space! And whenever I delete it, they all re-download when I go back to the courses within the Logos app.

The first folder holds 38.32 GB of data in my various resources, so between the two folders, I offloaded 42.19 GB leaving 8.59 GB on the local drive within the '~/Library/ApplicationSupport/Logos4' folder. I have not noticed any difference at all in performance, even after upgrading to Logos 10. Now, I will say that I did invest in a new 1TB Portable SSD with 2GB/sec of read & write speed. So, it can pull resources pretty quickly when needed.

This is great advice to people who struggle to keep Logos on heir internal SSD, however - since we are in unsupported territory anyway - I wonder if there is any change in stability and performance if you simply install Logos/Verbum on the external SSD without splitting it up.

I would recommend that because Indexing is being conducted on the local drive, and an SSD will be much faster with its superior write speed.
