Logos for Linux

Please build Logos for Linux. I'm tired of having to fire up my Mac just to use Logos. I've got six computers in my house and they all run Fedora Linux, except for one Mac, please, please offer Logos natively on Linux. It really shouldn't be that hard since there's a native Mac version.

i don't know if you have looked at the various threads discussing this and outlining some of the technology issues involved.

But the latest I have seen from Faithlife - https://logos.uservoice.com/forums/42823-logos-bible-software-6/suggestions/3635847-make-logos-4-and-5-avalible-to-individuals-on-ubun - is that they are not going to develop a Linux version but encouraging Linux users to use the web-based version at app.logos.com.

This is currently only available to Logos Now subscribers but is planned to be made available, in early July, to all who own a Logos 7 base package

I have followed these threads but I still wanted to ask, and will probably ask again, and again, and again.

I absolutely won't use the paid "subscription" model, I like to pay for things once and be done with it. If Logos offers the web version free for life for those of us who purchased the offline software, then I might use it- only because there is no other option.

However, I will not spend one more dime on any software for Microsoft Windows or Mac OS as i am no longer buying Windows or Mac computers.

All you need is a list of 50,000 orders for the Linux version. Then the Logos sales team will carry the ball for you.

Living and learning BSD system calls are implemented significantly different than linux kernel => https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/3322/what-makes-osx-programs-not-runnable-on-linux so linux lacks binary compatibility with BSD.

Thankful https://app.logos.com and https://app.verbum.com can be used in web browsers on many platforms, including Fedora Linux.

I have been able to install Logos 7 successfully in Ubuntu 18.04, but whenever a resource is added (update manager OR manually) it will crash. See this guide for how far I have gotten so far: Logos 7 in Ubuntu 18.04 using Wine

If I *manually* place a *.logos4 resources in the Resources folder, this type of error will show up:

By placing a *.lbsrvi file in the Resources folder I get this sort of error:

It seems quite apparent that whatever Logos uses to open the encrypted resources is not working in wine.

Does *anyone* have more understanding of how Logos 7 resources are encrypted? Let me be absolutely clear that I am *not* interested in cracking the encryption. Instead I am only trying to install in wine the necessary tool needed to decrypt that is working in Windows but may need manually installed or tweaked in wine.

Any help greatly appreciated!

George, welcome to the Faithlife forums.

Your analogy is a bit strained. The moneychangers in the Temple were attempting to capitalize on the sacrificial system within the precincts of the Temple where the sacrifices were offered. Faithlife is not sacrileging any worship requirement. They offer tools to study the Bible on particular operating system platforms. That would not incur our Savior's ire like the moneychangers in the Temple. I rather think Jesus is pleased that Faithlife has made these tools available.

This very long thread details how a Linux user can install Logos within Wine, thus bringing Logos to folks who prefer that platform. I suggest reading it from the end and not the beginning because the most relevant and up-to-date information is contained in the later replies.

I still don't get why FaithLife can't pull a Valve and dedicate a small team to working with the WINE project or if necessary the Proton project to support Logos "feeling" like a native experience.

This Project: https://github.com/ferion11/LogosLinuxInstaller is amazing, but there are still a few bugs. Namely for me right now (and I can't figure out which one) one of my recently purchased modules seems to be crashing the Logos GUI (indexer still runs). The Logos team could work with this project to make it work and be more seamless.

There are a ton of options for Logos to support a Linux userbase with minimal funding and without rewriting their entire backend to work with a Linux stack.

Please understand that FaithLife runs with a small programming staff that is already overloaded with backed up projects as they often release features before they have all the planned features - the Sermon Builder is a prime example.

Valve had an independent reason to create their own distro, and it wasn't to capture the tiny market of Linux-only users. It was to enter into the handheld gaming market. What Valve did is more akin to what Google did with Android.

They need to think about the future of computers. People are tired of Windows and privacy issues. And Logos doesn't seem to care about their customer's privacy. Very sad. And yes, I ran out of that grave too!

This is an old post, so I'm hoping you see it anyway. I managed to get Logos 8 going in Wine under the Lutris umbrella, but haven't been successful upgrading to Logos 9. Would love to upgrade to Logos 10, but have been afraid to try. Have you had any success and if so, could you share the details of how you accomplished it? Thanks.

What program...oh OK. I was going to ask what program you used to get it working, but you already stated that. I just tried a very old version 6 installer. Lutris ran it fine, but of course, getting the program to run is a fun challenge.

One more vote for Linux. We need a desktop application for Linux that works like the desktop application for Windows -- where we can download our books and not be tied to the Internet. I know its 2024, but sometimes the Internet is just not there.
