How to Open Multiple Verses at once?

Greetings. How do I open multiple verses in the Logos Desktop app?

For example, is there a way to search for the following verses, Matt.11:25-27; John 5:45–47 at the same time, in Logos? I can do this in Accordance. However, whenever I search for multiple verses in Logos, it won't search for them. It says, "No results. Check your spelling, or try broadening your query." I say, no, that is not right. I know you do many things, so why not do this wonderful thing? And so because of this issue, I had to run to Accordance for help.

Please let me know.
Thank you,
Joel

1.The Search tool needs  bible:"Matthew 11:25–27"  OR bible:"John 5:45–47", but it will not open those verses in a bible, which is what I suspect you are asking?

    2.  Create a Passage List for those verses and use Open All to display them in your bible.

Click the bible version  ( e.g.. ESV) to select another bible.

Yes, thats definitely a lacking feature. In Accordance it is so easy to do.

Thanks Dave. But this seems to be more a turn around than a feature.

Does using an Inline Search provide what you are looking for?

Graham has two-column display showing, while most people use no-column display, i.e. continuous scrolling.

Note that we both use Surface Text, otherwise Logos would also show hits in the footnotes where the passages are referenced. The search works without quotes, too, so in my opinion not a bit more difficult than that other software.

Yes, I was aware of the two columns.

No, I meant more it doesn't only show the wanted text.

I have seen without the surface text I got an error. But if I select it. I also see the same. I also don't see the "search result". It doesn't search at all.

Replicating your search in the KJV 1900 I get the same as the NIV:

    image

In the menu in the Locator Bar under "Article" it does have Search Result and it gives 6 hits. But I think I found a hint: The Inline Search inherits the search parameters from the Search panel (which is horrible design and many users including myself have begged Logos to make the search settings visible in the Inline Search (now that they are visible buttons at all, they used to be completely hidden earlier).

I can replicate zero hits when I turn the Search settings to Narrow.

Change them to Default or Broad and the results come in.

    To NB.Mick

Many thanks. Also das ist ja mal wirklich unintuitiv.

Logos we have to talk about this feature...

er..ah... I find a Passage list is easy to do... I dislike the inline search method but understand why some might prefer it.

In terms of what was required by the OP, the Search "method" used is confusing and complicated.

Refer to my earlier post, as the Passage List is much simpler, and you don't have to display the verses in the bible.

Thank you all for your suggestions and trying to help me out. Creating a passage list for every search I want to do IS going to be a lot of work. Logos should provide a way to do this easily. In fact, this should be one of the important features of the software. Don't you all think? I don't want to run to Accordance (fantastic one), Google (it will provide some references), or websites such as BibleGateWay Plus, etc., to do such types of search.

Hopefully, Logos will work on this feature soon.

Did you see my reply to Fabian? You need to make sure the Search parameters are set to "Default" or "Broad" rather than "narrow", then the Inline Search method will work smoothly

    Thank you!

It is working now. I searched it with a "OR" operator(?) john 1.1 OR Matthew 1.1 OR James 1.1 OR Ezek. 1.1 OR Lev. 1.1 (for testing).

I tried to search it with an AND operator, but it didn't show any results. I think this is strange. I thought it would work if I used "AND" as in this example, Matt.11. AND James 1.1, etc., not OR.

The AND operator requires both terms to be present in the same verse (or chapter depending on settings) which, I think, explains why that search wouldn't provide any results here.

That's correct, since logical operator AND requires that something meets both criteria, whereas OR means something meets any of the criteria, at least one. A bible verse can't be Mt 11 and James 1.1 at the same time - it can only be one of those. That's why OR matches correctly.

I agree, but creating a Passage List corresponds more closely to Accordance than constructing a Search** and using the correct syntax.

    1. Passage List

Enter the passages separated by commas  e.g. Mt 11:25–27,Jn 5:45–47,Jn 6:4
They will be displayed much like they appear in the bible, OR
use Open all to display in the bible.

    2. Inline Search

**Set Reference Matching to Default in a separate Search tab
**Ensure you are searching Surface Text.
Enter the passages separated by OR  e.g. Mt 11:25–27 OR Jn 5:45–47 OR Jn 6:4

The Default setting changes the Search to looking for milestones and cross-references
Surface Text ensures that cross-references are not displayed, and you only see the milestones!!

Yes, it certainly is easy and quick.  You don't even have to type in the book name repeatedly either – for example, Jn. 1:1, 18, 3:16, 5:1, 3-10, 17; Acts 2:7, 28:6, etc.  It is an extremely quick process.

Additionally, you also have a "Context" slider to view each search hit in its context; and, a right click menu to save the search as a "Reference List", i.e., what Logos calls a "Passage List".

I've hoped for a long time that Logos would adopt this feature as it is designed within Accordance.  Maybe one day.

A feature not in Logos because Logos uses a Look up rather than a Search ...
