Legacy Libraries

I'm fairly new to Logos, having first purchased Logos 10 in January of 2023. Since then I've been building my library with Legacy packages, moving between Logos 5-9 depending on resource priority and pricing. Being new, I don't know if there were legacy packages in the past that are no longer offered, such as Logos 1-4.

Does Logos retire the oldest legacy library package when new editions come out? Should I feel any sense of urgency to purchase from the Logos 5 Legacy offerings before the rollout this fall? Are there any changes planned for Legacy Libraries as a whole?

Logos could decide to retire legacy libraries, but they've been offered for some time now.

No, Logos does not retire the oldest legacy librarie. In fact, it used to be the case that there were no legacy libraries at all, and we were actually never offered legacy libraries from Logos 1-4 (noting that Logos 4 was the major rewrite of the platform and the first to be sold over the web - Logos 1-3 were sold as CD-ROMs and the rights typically only included that one print-run of CDs, so it might be impossible to sell those as Legacy packages today).

I don't think I've seen a Libronix or L4 library re-offered. And re-offering 'legacy' packages picked up just the last few years.

Your risk:

- What's in the package can disappear (publisher; new contract).

- Discounting is bouncing around. Looking at the current discounts, I get the ferling they're trial'ing reduced discounts vs results

I don't see any risk in a Logos5 vs a Logos9 disappearing. The latest is sometimes delayed (eg Logos 10 as legacy).

Thank you for the replies. I took advantage of the current sale but haven't exhausted my wish list. I'll just keep adding as I have been and hope nothing changes before I get to where I want to be.

Keep in mind that at the end of the day the Legacy Packages are just bundled books at some sort of discount. For the most part, the resources contained in them could be purchased individually (not all the time though!).

Sometimes you might be better off being strategic about what you are purchasing Maybe there are some specific ones you really want and it turns out that works out costing less. Sure you don't get all those other titles but were you really ever going to refer to or use them?

I understand that there is a lot of fluff in packages, but I disagree that having the extra resources in base packages is a bad thing. I often come across a link in a resource which links to a resource that I've never heard of and wouldn't have known I needed, yet I have it in my library from purchasing a package at some point in time.

Totally. In the specific scenario you've mention I would totally to do the same and frequently have.

To reword my original post, crunch the numbers and do your own cost-benefit analysis. My personal conclusion is I can be a better steward of finances by reducing my spending on books that I might never actually refer to. Especially, given the print library function and the Logos Pro search capabilities that will tell me if a book that I don't own in Logos has something useful to contribute to my study.

Exactly. There's no harm gaining extra resources, if the books you wanted are cheaper in a Legacy Library. Here's a live example for me. I'd quite like to purchase:

The only thing holding me back is the fact I have Ryle's commentaries in Kindle and try to stick to a budget. I would probably purchase during the Legacy Library sale if it weren't for the fact that the sale discount is only $3 for me, so I can afford to wait until I actually need Ryle's commentaries in Logos.

I've been very happy to get so many extra books with a Legacy Library purchase. As Joseph mentioned, it's nice to have resources pop up through a link or search that I may not have expected. I may not read the entirety of every book in my library, but having them there is great when accessing additional resources during my studies.

There have been a few libraries I've added that had resources I wouldn't want to show up in my studies but it was easy to hide them. I still came out ahead getting the library for the specific volumes I was interested in.

As I have the Text Creation Partnerships collections, my library exceeds 50,000 items. If you need to sort through 2,700 to find 20, I suspect you are not taking full advantage of temporary collections and/or carefully formed search arguments. I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've had that level of "false" positives. [8-|]

I purchased a package that had a few resources I wanted but several I didn't. I was able to hide the unwanted ones so they don't show up in a search, but still get the ones I wanted at a discount from buying individually.

(I even remember a few of the old-timers in the forums telling me it wasn't the best option, and I remember younger me telling them they didn't know what they were talking about.

I now see that wasn't the brightest way to do what I wanted. Again, we'll chat in about fifteen years. [Y]

I wanted the OT "Be" series by Warren Wiersbe which is $160. By purchasing the L6 SDA Bronze Legacy package for $21.62, I got the "Be" series, plus a few more volumes I wasn't looking for but was happy to keep. It only took a few minutes to hide the rest of the material, which was most of the package, that I'm not interested in. I don't know what's so irrational about that.

The trick is to rate/tag the "fluff" in such a way that it is not used in Searches e.g. I have tagged 234 commentaries as "Notes" so they won't be included in my 3 Commentary Collections. But that also means I can search them if necessary. And I always rate/tag new books so they fall into the appropriate collection. And I can easily eliminate books rated below 3 stars from any Search!

I do Hide books/authors that are beyond my range of interest. But I revise the hidden and low rated books (and tagging) as my opinion does change.

Well it is only rational if you really do have no interest not only in what the writers wrote but also what other writers wrote about them.

If Justin Welby makes a comment about the Andy Capp's theology and I have hidden all my works by Andy Capp then I loose the convenient way to check that what Justin says is accurate and accurate in context.

I rarely find that unloved books are a hindrance in my workflow and often find they are a surprising advantage. It's not as if I am tripping over the piles of them.

My opinion trumps that of other writers[:D] But there is only one author I would automatically confine to the pit should any of their books be included in a new collection! I will keep those toward whom I am indifferent because their work is significant.
