Speaking more as a Logos user than employee here...

I bought an iPad mini (bought it new, 6th gen) earlier this year when all the rumors suggested it would still be a while before a 7th gen mini was released. I've had no regrets. It's perfect as a reader for Logos, Kindle, and whatever other platforms, all on one device. I read from it nearly daily. I keep notifications turned off at all times so as not to be disturbed, and let dark mode kick in at night--especially handy for reading in bed.

I'd also point out that the processor in the iPad mini (A15) is more advanced than the base-level, 10th gen iPad (A14).

For me, it's been the perfect digital reader.

I have had the latest mini since it was released. It is great as a reader and Logos works well on it. You can also use the web-app for more functionality when required.

I did exactly what Rick did a couple weeks ago: used mini 6 for $300, minimal reading apps with no notifications and no distractions. I also purchased an off-brand pencil for $11 that works just as well as the pricey Apple Pencil. Love it!

Note: I still have my old mini 4, but it was grinding to a halt, and despite wiping it to factory setting and starting from scratch, it was still unbearably slow. I also tried an e-ink device (Meebook 7") and couldn't stand its slow screen refresh, and returned it. I'm happy with the used mini 6 + pencil.

Definitely not for Logos, but it depends on what else you want to do with the iPad mini.

I regularly buy more storage than I actually need, so I got the 256; but my mini is probably using less than half of the space. Logos is using about 20 GB on mine, which is probably higher than normal usage. In contrast, I bought the 1 TB version of the M4 iPad Pro because I wanted the nano texture screen (1 TB was the minimum), and I occasionally edit video in Final Cut Pro for the iPad. But when I don't have edited video on my iPad Pro, I only use a small fraction of that storage.

The problem with the latest iteration of the iPad Mini is that it's either the base model of 64GB of storage or buy up for the 256GB. Josh may need the storage for other uses or to download as much of his Logos library as he needs for offline use.

Bill, I don't doubt good experiences. But you have to admit (if you want, of course) 're-install' is one of the key Faithlife fix-it techniques (all their platforms ... have you tried re-install?). And they don't appear to to have much internal self-repair .. send them logs! Logos is the only company I've had to re-install ... both platforms. Multiple times. Wait, there was another app years back I re-installed.

2. There are logos reasons not to download your entire library: A) Resource corruption and/or a disconnect between versions is fairly common for downloaded resources. This can lead to corruption with notes & highlights. App corruption is fairly common, requiring a delete/reinstall. C) A good number of users have had difficulties in reinstalling the app after having downloaded their entire library. The app wants to redownload the previously downloaded resources and when it has trouble doing so, the library becomes corrupt requiring a new delete/reinstall process. Rinse, repeat. D) Similarly, some users have had their downloads get stuck and they need to delete & reinstall.

3. There are iOS / iPadOS reasons not to download your entire library: The OS sometimes does not release storage memory (I don't know the technical term). Let me explain: I downloaded videos on an app for a flight I took last month. The app grew from 1GB to 5GB. No problem, I downloaded videos. After I watched the videos, however, I deleted them but the app size remained at 5GB. I have experienced similar issues with Logos. When I was beta testing the Logos mobile app more regularly, the app "grew" with each and every update. On a couple of occasions, I deleted the app and the overall storage space remained the same afterwards. I had to wipe the device and reinstall everything.

I am not a power user JoshinRI but my iPad has been pretty much allowed to gather stuff up for the last year or so.

I do use iCloud a lot but even so... at present my 256GB has 188GB free.

I do agree though that it is usually pointless to download all the detritus that comes with Logos packages if there is a chance that a re-instal will be a thing.

In fact, I just had to because I bought a new iPad Pro M4 that was plagued by kernel panics and endless reboot loops and Apple replaced it due to a hardware failure. It took a couple of hours for my resources to redownload on my replacement iPad. I let it do its thing while I went about other tasks.

Here’s the thing: Josh did not say he intended to download his entire Logos library to the iPad Mini when he asked if he should get more storage. You just assumed that was what he was going to do.

If Josh does not run any additional programs that require more storage or intends to download a large music library that would eat into the 64GB, and intends to use his own and the church’s WiFi when he uses the Logos app on the tablet, he could get by with 64GB.

My Mini is basically my everywhere Logos. It does much better than my phone. It's close to perfect as my church carry. It's much more than a reader and I can add to Notes. It's just not nearly the same thing as desktop.

I have a mini, 5th generation, with 64GB.

A phone is really too small to do any reading on, but the mini is perfect. I consider the full sized iPad and Pro's to be too big. If you are going to carry a tablet with you that is as big as a Macbook, why not just carry a Macbook?

Logos is fantastic on the iPad mini, as long as you have realistic expectations. Everyone should know that the desktop app is what you want if you need full features. The mobile app is great for reading, and a little bit more. It handles open windows as full screen apps with multiple virtual screens. This is similar to the virtual desktops on MacOS. You swipe left or right to switch to other open windows. I use Logos on the mini in landscape mode.

The biggest disappointment is that it cannot read audio along with your Bible (with the exception of a couple of English translations ... but no Greek). This is something that would be particularly useful for mobile users. But Logos is off chasing AI powered rainbows and apparently doesn't care that much about making everything work on mobile.

I have never attempted to download my entire library onto the iPad mini. To be honest, my library has some fantastic resources, but also a lot of worthless junk I picked up along the way. But I would like to think that you could do so if desired. I do not see Logos issuing any limitations. If something is not working correctly, it is a bug ... either in Logos or in iPadOS.

It is a matter of affordability. If you can afford it I would suggest getting the 256 GB. This means you will likely never run out of room. If you cannot afford it then you should not make it a consideration.

Well, I really don’t want to choose 😀

But if I had to choose, I would stick with just the iPad Pro. But you have to understand that I use my iPad Pro (with the Apple keyboard cover) the way lots of folks use laptops. It is my primary personal mobile device. I’m even typing this on it. My iPad mini is pretty much just for reading. I have a MacBook Pro, but it rarely leaves my desk. I probably should’ve gotten a Mac Studio instead.

I’ve got the 13” M4 iPad Pro, but a compromise might be an 11” model. It would be smaller, which is nice for reading by itself in a comfortable chair or even in bed, but it would still have the power of the iPad Pro. Or, even the new iPad Air with M2 processors are plenty powerful.

I do hope to one day own a small powerful inexpensive device (ipad mini 64 maybe) that I can use as an effective reader with a pen to highlight for Bible studies and sermon prep.

In a perfect world I would download my whole library but I also am not rich.

I can't afford anything with the word "pro" in it. I do have a newer Surface Pro and run Logos on it occasionally.

I am hopeful to being an assistant pastor or chaplain in the future (perhaps in a daily living setting or nursing home setting). I am a life enrichment assistant now in Rhode Island (serving an elderly senior population of up to 17 participants in a weekly Bible Study as part of my weekly duties) but hoped to get a similar job and be ordained as a chaplain before Jesus comes back.

I need to start over in a new church to do that and be welcomed by a wise church seeking a seasoned professional with an M.Div from Luther Rice Seminary (2017) who has been (for over 2 years) derailed by Covid (the whole world was really) and concerned about what I call worldly capitulation.

I do not like the music of Hillsong, Bethel and Elevation Worship despite being a worship leader of sorts and I use the ESV or NKJV. I am not strictly King James either and I am not "reformed" in my theology.,

I am a Southern Baptist at heart and eager to reconnect and serve God using a device in Bible study and sermon prep (if permitted on occasion).

I think the most I could hope for is to be an assistant pastor down south (someone pray me in, please) and to hope that a church and its leadership will see a man and his wife with a heart to serve faithfully til I draw my last breath - preferably in a some full time or bi-vocational manner.

In churches around Rhode Island I have learned how NOT to be a pastor and what NOT to do in ministry. I've changed churches a few times but only have years of lengthy committed service volunteer roles.

.....all this being said. I think a 64 mg used Ipad Mini might be perfect....to get back on the horse and ride out for Jesus's glory. I hope to use Logos to do this and be useful again....soon. Thanks for your prayers.

On Macbreak weekly they were speculating that the reason the iPad mini has not been updated is a possible foldable iPhone coming out which when unfolded would be about the same size. They said that the thinness of the device when folded is a big priority at Apple.

I disagree with my Alabama friend about downloading your entire library to your iPad. I have downloaded over 6,000 Logos resources on my iPad, and I have had no problems with that. My iPad has the M1 processor and plenty of room on its drive for the books. The only reason that I have not downloaded all 9,700 books to my iPad is because I read on it too regularly to take the time to do so. It has been over seven months since I did this, and I have had no problems.

I am not saying the iPad is a replacement for the desktop Logos. You cannot run the full Logos program on any iPad. If that is your intention, you will be disappointed. But the iPad is great for reading and much Bible study with your full library downloaded. I would recommend getting as many gb as you can afford. Your books will do better if there is enough room on the drive.

Just be sure to have an iPad with plenty of room for the books.

I continue to imagine myself in a church Bible study as a congregation member or study facilitator hoping to make use of Ipad Mini and my resources to make Jesus shine...basically to be a real source of info.

I can't really afford 256 mg (even used) and I don't want an ipad mini to try and index forever either.

I own a Windows Surface Pro 11 but its too big and bulky to carry to classes or church really. I will wait for a cheaper ipad mini 64 on ebay when the newer one comes out I suppose. That way my wife will not divorce me for trying to satisfy my gadget itch which I confess is really all this is.

I bought some 17 pt NKJV print bibles I promise to open real soon too.

There are many heartaches and pain that can come from downloading your entire library. By all means, do so, but don't say you weren't warned!

I dislike the bezels on the ipad mini and the fact it has not updated in years - but think it might work to in a Bible Study to do quick lookups and fact finding.

Yes, that's exactly why I needed to buy a new one (mini 6). My previous one was mini 4, about 9 years old, and it slowed down on every app (and the overall OS as it was upgraded to the latest upgradeable version) that it was completely unusable even for the most basic tasks like browsing, checking emails, or going thru a PDF during teaching.

I wiped it and only reloaded the minimal necessary apps, and it was still unusable. Lesson learned: If your Apple device is nearing the end of its life cycle (according to Apple), don't upgrade it to the latest and greatest iOS version.

Josh, did you try looking for a used mini on eBay like I did? I spent less than $350 on it including a pencil (off-brand) and a nice case. Is that within your budget?

Well, it's not a matter of our developers making something "look like e ink." For this to happen on iOS/iPadOS, Apple would have to make an e ink device that uses an electronic ink/paper screen. I've heard no rumors that Apple is even considering something like this.

If you want to read Logos books on an e ink device, one of the Boox tablets (or something similar) running Android would be the best option. I tried using one for about a week a couple of years ago, but the screen wasn't responsive enough for my purposes, so I didn't keep it. I assume technology has improved, but I haven't tried the newest models.

Dark mode on my iPad mini works great for me, but I realize that eye sensitivity varies from person to person. I have it go back and forth between light and dark modes based on sunset, all controlled in the settings on the iPad. Here is a screenshot from Logos on my iPad mini in dark mode.

Hi Josh,

As a device to be held in my hands, I actually think having some bezel is an advantage. If the bezels are too thin, you end up touching the screen by mistake all the time. I personally think the whole "thin bezel" thing is oversold, but your opinion might be different.

I can't comment on whether 4GB RAM is sufficient, but I can report that my mini 6 runs Logos, Kindle, and all my other apps with no lag at all. (Contrast with my old mini 4 which was lagging significantly on all apps even after a clean swipe and minimal apps re-install; that's why I got the mini 6.)

Pastor here - I use an iPad mini to preach from with Logos, and have for years. Whether I'm preaching from a pulpit, doing a wedding, or sitting with a small group, it's the perfect form factor. While the sermon feature on Logos isn't perfect, it's good enough, and I love the seamlessness between the desktop and the iPad. I've imported hundreds of sermons and Bible studies from twenty years of Bible teaching; it feels good to have most of my resources in one platform.

I have the sixth generation, and it's almost three years old, but I have no issues with its performance. The battery life isn't great, but that doesn't hinder its usefulness as a preaching device - just check to make sure you have 30% or better before starting the service. I appreciate the bezels, and the fact that I can hold it for an hour if needed. It pairs well with my Bible - less noticeable than a full-size device.

Other than reading and occasionally taking notes with the pen, I don't use it for creation. But it's a superb reading device.

Rick, I used a Boot tablet for a few months, before getting a Mini. Logos worked...okay on it. In the end, I found that it wasn't quite reliable enough for me to use as my primary preaching/teaching device. Between occasional crashes and freezing and the endless lag, I ended up reverting to my MacBook and the Boox gathered dust.

Sold it on eBay for a profit, and bought my Mini, so I was ultimately happy!

Josh, I'm curious about your concern with the bezels. The Mini 6 has fairly small bezels, and I consider them to be something of an asset. Care to share more?

I love my iPad mini. I have the latest version and it is plenty fast for using Logos and many other Apps. I don’t even notice the bezels. It’s great for reading, making notes, using Factbook, search, passage guide and other Logos features. It is incredibly portable and useful. I posted this comment in the forum with it.

I like my mini. To eliminate the wide bezel the fingerprint scanner has to go. I have faceID on the phone., but I prefer the fingerprint reader on a tablet.

And my mini has 64GB RAM (is that what you meant? I don't think they ever made one with only 4), of which I still have 20.44GB available. It depends on your own usage whether 64GB is enough or not. I has proven to be more than enough for me.

I think JT was correct about this prior to the M series processors, but I no longer agree, The M processors can handle it, and it is great for reading.

The processor is unrelated. It is the app and the OS.

There are many heartaches and pain that can come from downloading your entire library. By all means, do so, but don't say you weren't warned!

Well, you may be correct, but I felt that I had nothing to lose by downloading over 6,000 resources. And so far, it has worked just fine. If it messes up I will have not really lost anything. The books are always available to download again. But the first 5 months, there has been no problem.

I plan to download the rest of my 9,771 resources to my iPad.

In addition, I have tons of music, other books, and home videos on the iPad.

I have my full library downloaded on my IPad Air 256GB. Only using 9.8GB. Total on my IPad using 31GB. Library is 561 books. I don’t think I will ever run out of space.
My IPad Air is the 2024 with the M2 chip. It has never lagged out with all my tabs running. Unless Logos does a MEGA upgrade; I don’t see it ever happening.

J.T., no offense, but you have made many comments just like this one on these forums over the span of many years. It sounds really condescending. There are many of us who have downloaded our entire library onto our tablets without issue.

The problem with the latest iteration of the iPad Mini is that it's either the base model of 64GB of storage or buy up for the 256GB. Josh may need the storage for other uses or to download as much of his Logos library as he needs for offline use.
