Indexing tools issue

I routinely use the "rebuild index" tool as I am always wanting to make sure, well, the indexing is accurate.

Generally, rebuild index, should delete and rebuild all your resource indexes. Yes, this can take minutes to hours.

I noticed in 37.0.533 (admittedly I never checked before) that some resources seem to want to be reindexed.

For example, after doing a rebuild index to completion, I then typed the reindex took and it drops down 6 or so resources listed as

Reindex The Gospel Of Luke

Reindex Anacharsis(Greek)

these are just 2 of the 6 examples.

I had an expectation that the Rebuild Index would have resolved those, and all the unindexed resources.

I have executed a reindex only 3 or 4 times in 2 decades so I may not be the best resource. But the drop-down selection menu entries are in no way an indication that those resources need rebuilding. They are simply suggested commands based on your previous use of the reindex command.

Interesting, the thing is I never reindexed those directly so no reason for them to be suggest commands, I typed the reindex tool at of curiosity.

Our minds work differently. I would expect them NOT to suggest books I had already reindexed.

That is exactly the point. Since I had done a full rebuild index, it seems they are suggesting books that still need to be indexed. Which makes no sense. Either we are misinterpreting the Reindex xxx and it means something else.

You misunderstood me partially. The routine is going to suggest something to follow the "rebuild index" simply because of the structure of the command. It is unlikely to suggest all if you have run it recently; it will suggest resources that you have NOT explicitly named. If you have only run rebuilds against all resources, it will appear random what resources are mentioned. By random, I mean we don't know what the procedure does in order to predict the title (assuming it is predictable).

Not at all. The Command Box is very flexible with your entries and you would get a similar (apparently random) selection for the Open command. Would you conclude that they needed to be Read?

Dave is correct here. There is no significance to the suggested resources. The reindex command requires a book to be named in order to be invalid, so without any further letters to guide its suggestions, it's just picking some. You can get it to suggest any book in your library if you start specifying the title.

I would suggest that is likely a waste of time. It is easy to tell when there are problems with the index, because search results in a specific book will show their highlighting in a way that is offset from the text in the book. This does not happen commonly. Rarely there are serious problems that would lead to needing the index index rebuilt. This would be evidenced by broad problems as above, or by other serious issues that would probably be diagnosed by the support team.

If you found yourself in a situation where you needed to be frequently manually rebuilding the entire index, then it may be likely that you have some hardware problems that are leading to corruption in the files on your disk.

So when I type Reindex and Reindex Logos Hymnal shows in the dropdown what is this telling me? To me it is suggesting that this resources needs to be reindexed. If not I can accept that, but what does Reindex Logos Hymnal mean? There are others and it behaves differently on two PC. Each should a few 6-8 resources, prefixed with the word Reindex.

Odd to me.

As far as re-indexing it became habit over years as a typical first step in troubleshooting as the software evolved from version 1.6 to what it is today.

I will gladly abandon the practice!

It's just suggesting some random resources. It's not meant to imply anything about the indexing state of those resources. It's no different than if you typed "Reindex Jesus" and were suggested a few different resources that include Jesus in the title. That doesn't mean they need reindexed. It just means those are resources in your library that you could choose to reindex if you wanted.
