Question About Notes and "Note Books" in Logos

I do a lot of reading and highlighting on handheld devices (I Pad App mostly).

I make a "Notebook" for every book that I read something from to make sure that I have a notebook for my notes and highlights on that particular book.

The first thing that I do when I am reading (a chapter of a book for example) is to make a note and make sure that the note is located in the notebook where I want the following highlights to also be placed as I am reading (let's say the chapter for example).

When I switch from reading one book to another book the very first thing that I do is to make a note so that hopefully the notes and highlights that I take in the different book will be placed in the note book that I have designated for them to go into.

When I go into my desktop version of the software it is showing that my highlights are in "No Notebook."

Then I have to use the desktop app to manually go back and place my highlights in the notebook, that from my understanding, they should have been already placed in (For Example - The name of the book - "Politics According to the Bible").

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

By the way - sometimes it does place the highlights in the notebook that I want them in. So if I am doing something wrong - why does it work only some of the time?

Your explanation of the issue is crystal clear. Many separate mini-paragraphs give breathing room to your request for info. An expert's solution will be most welcome!

I am hoping that maybe MJ or Mark Barnes could chime in on this.

I am also wondering if I am the only one that this is happening to. Does this happen to anyone else?

My true feelings are that I wish that there was an easier way for the user to change notebooks when changing from one book to another and/or one notebook to another.

I have thoughts that maybe something like a drop down panel located right within the book itself where the name of the notebook that the notes and highlights would be placed (similar to the box above on the right that says "paragraph" right inside of this word processor).

Then I could manually see where they were being put and it would also alert me to the fact that the notes that I am taking were being placed in "no notebook."

I don't want a single note placed in "no notebook" so I would like to be alerted to the fact that is happening.

I am striving to be clear.

One of the differences between desktop and mobile is that on desktop you can have a different notebook associated with each highlighting palette while on mobile it is an app-wide setting. So, unless you change this setting on mobile for each book you are reading you won't get the highlights in the book-specific notebook.

One thing worth being aware of is that in the Notes Tool you can filter the display just to show highlights in a particular book

Sometimes that can remove the need for individual notebooks for each book

In the iPad app there is a menu item MORE in the bottom right. If you tap on that there is a SETTINGS option, should be second from the bottom. Tap on that. Third from the bottom in the next menu there is a NOTEBOOK FOR HIGHLIGHTS option where you can set the folder where your highlights are stored in notes. If you keep your highlight in a different folder for each book you need to change this when you change the books you are reading.

Another way is to keep all the highlights in one folder and use the filter in the notes app when you want to find the highlight in the folder. That way you don't need to keep changing the folder in the iPad App.

The third option is to let all the highlights stay in No Folder as using the filters in notes you can filter by highlight and then the name of the resource.

This might sound simple minded, but at the very least I would think that even if you didn't set a particular notebook for highlights that it should automatically place it in a notebook - using the name of the book itself.

I do not like the "no notebook" notebook personally. I don't think that should even be a possibility in this kind of software built for tracking and finding information for one's personal research.

Each book already has a built in notebook on the desktop app (accessed through the filter) where it will show you all the notes and highlights under the "no notebook" label - would it not be easier and more intuitive for the user, to just automatically have a notebook built into each book based on its name (kind of like what Amazon does inside their books?

Antony, I have hundred's of notebooks to scroll through under that particular setting in the iPad app that you mentioned in your comment - they need to place a filter on it (alphabetical at least) so that it would be quicker and easier to find a particular notebook.

I still feel like the interphase of the software is not intuitive enough or easy enough for me. I have been using the software and doing training on using the software for years and I still struggle with it (Plug - John Fallahee - at learnlogos.com is a great instructor on use of the software).

I want for Logos to be successful and to attract new users but I think that stuff like this (complicated to the core) and the higher cost of the software is what turns people off, howbeit I do feel that they have been heading in the right direction on simplifying the software.

I feel like for Logos to be more successful in the future and to attract new users - they are going to have to continue to find new ways that simplify using the software, while also demonstrating its power to do incredible searches in every single one of their resources.

I have now spent over 3 hours looking at this one particular issue and still feel overburdened by the complicated process of just making sure that my notes and highlights that I make in a book end up in a "real" "labeled" notebook.

Not trying to be mean, but not many people have that kind of patience or even the time to spend on something that should in all reality "be as simple as pie."

On a positive note, I love God and I love Logos.

Graham did point out a way for one to see your highlights (even the no notebook highlights) based on the title of the book so at least one has that option.

The notes feature has come a long way. Compared to where it was a few years ago, its been like night and day. For that I want to say "Thank You" to the people that have done the hard work to make that possible. I am pretty sure that Mark Barnes helped them to make improvements in this area.

I frequently simply "apply a highlight" without being concerned about placing it in a notebook knowing that I can filter the Notes Tool by book if I just want to see highlights specific to a particular book.

I am a person that is having some health issues. I am struggling with some mental/memory decline.

I know that I don't always get my facts correct, but I thought it was possible for one to search within their highlights according to topic and/or bible verse.

Being able to search within my own highlights by bible verse and/or topic would allow me to narrow down on the best material that I have come across in my studies up until today.

That's what I really want to be able to do.

Is that possible? I thought that it was, but I might be wrong.

I should add - that I am talking about searching highlights on the desk top app.

The ability to search all of them at once by topic or scripture reference.

The ability to search by color and/or palette.
