For the first time, I'm Ambivalent

I've been using Logos since the 1990's, version 1.6 if memory serves, but sometimes it doesn't. I've always been one of those users who jumps on the newest version the day it's released. I have more than $15,000 invested in Logos resources and i'm current with Logos 10 Gold and the full feature set as well as tons of additional libraries and resources.

For the first time ever, i'm considering not upgrading when the new subscription model comes out. Here are a few of my reasons:

1. For several years I've been requesting that Logos allow the larger text sizes on iPad which are available through the Apple API's, but they have taken no action on this. There are multiple threads of mine requesting this. I'll be 69 in a few weeks and my eyesight just no longer allows me to use the Logos apps on my 13" iPad pro. Other apps by Kindle, Apple Books and Life (formerly Tecarta) Bible ALL allow for larger text sizes. I can't overstate the huge impact this has. It makes using the Logos app almost impossible to me.
2. I have 8 timeline resources which do not open on my Mac. Logos acknowledges the problem but is unable to fix it or make any equivalent replacement.
3. In general, i'm not a fan of subscriptions for apps, though i do have some when they seem worthwhile and have something to offer. For the first time, i see nothing compelling in the new release (so far) to warrant an ongoing subscription. This is the weakest of my reasons, and could be overcome if i see something i want/need, but so far i haven't. I've read all the threads and the announcements. I remain unswayed (so far).

For the first time ever, i'm considering not upgrading when the new subscription model comes out.

I'm surprised that iPad text size is such a problem as the app Settings on my Android phone allow more than a 2x increase (and is independent of the Android Settings which affect only the menus).

Ultimately, if you don't like subscription then FL will update/support your Logos software and provide updates/fixes for your resources so that you can continue to use the features you own.

One nice thing about the subscription is the free trial. So on launch day, when they have the first round of features, you can get a free trial, buy a new library if you want, and then cancel if the features are not worthwhile to you.

On the iPad app there is a “View Settings” choice under the three dots in the upper left corner. On this menu there are sliders to set text size, brightness, and background for each pane (Personally I find Sepia easier on my eyes). Does your version not have this? I will be 68 in a few weeks and use reading glasses. I use an iPad mini for about 99% of what I do and appreciate that adjustments are needed for older eyes.

Are you not able to adjust the text settings on your iPad using this panel? I do however note that the logos app does not support dynamic type and therefore the user interface stays at the same size.

From what I understand, refinements like this are part of the reason for going to subscription. With a more consistent revenue flow and expanding their user base into a market using the app that can’t spend thousands on resources, they will be able to invest in things that they might not otherwise. Time will tell.

For any that have not read my previous threads. YES. I am fully aware of the in app text size adjustments. They are all maxxed out. However, the Max text size is MUCH smaller than those which other apps on the iPad provide using the apple API. Those other apps include Kindle, Apple Books and Life Bible (formererly Tecarta Bible) and others. Logos does not use the apple API's which allow the larger text sizes and Logos in app sizes are consequently much smaller than other apps.

John, I also have been an avid Logos Bible Software user since the early 1990's. And for the first time, I am not going to upgrade with a subscription product. I am happy with what the Logos that I now have. (I will continue to buy a few books now and then to supplement the over 9,800 resources that I now have. I will especially update some commentary sets when new volumes come out. If Logos ever gets around to publishing the new edition of the Works of John Wesley, I would certainly buy that.) But the last thing I want is a monthly subscription bill.

With that, I am able to use the lastest "updated stable" version of the software which, if you pay by the year cost only about $99. And another benefit that I find that I have with the subscription is that after 2 years, I get to keep what I have then.... which to me... doesn't seem too shabby. But like I said.... each of us have to make up our own minds.... [:D]

This is pretty much my feeling. Logos' user base is aging. I've been retired now for a few years and being on a fixed income, i am reluctant to add ongoing subscription expenses. I prefer scrounging together the funds for a one time payment.

Clearly, you've not thought this out. With the subscription, a Logosian is getting long-standing issues fixed right and left. Suddenly, Logos just works!

But. A day comes, when a Logosian steps off the fix-it train. Gone are all those (serious, per Mark) repairs. Or in this case, readable text for us old-sters. It's scary to even contemplate.

Ok ... maybe Faithlife will re-think their plan ... they always do.

With that, I am able to use the lastest "updated stable" version of the software which, if you pay by the year cost only about $99. And another benefit that I find that I have with the subscription is that after 2 years, I get to keep what I have then.... which to me... doesn't seem too shabby.

There is no alternative to subscription (Logos Update??).
A Pro discounted subscription costs $99/year but non-subscribers will also continue to use the latest "updated" (and stable) version of the Logos app.
You don't keep what you "have" after 2 years as AI and cloud features are excluded. This is the legacy fallback license and it is only available to Logos 10 owners like yourself.
