Logos 4: 32-bit vs. 64-bit

There's been some discussion here about running L4 on Windows 7 64-bit, so clearly L4 supports 64-bit Windows (and therefore supports more than 3GB of RAM).

My question is this: Is there a separate 32-bit vs. 64-bit version of L4, like I'm seeing with other programs? How does Logos know which version to download and install?

I want to make sure I have the right version of L4 that supports my 64-bit OS.

The Windows version of L4 is still 32-bit. You should know that a 64-bit OS will support 32-bit and 64-bit applications (but not older 16-bit ones) and also support 4 GB or more of memory.

I recently upgraded from Win7 32 bit to Win7 64 bit. Everything works just fine. In Win 7 the 64 bit version runs two different program file directories and all the 32 bit programs are stored in the Program Files (x86) directory, while 64 bit programs are stored in the Program Files directory. All run fine. With L4 the program is automatically stored and run from the AppData directory so the above does not really apply to L4. You do not have to do anything special.

What I have found most beneficial is the imporved performance of L4. I cannot explain why from a technical perspective (becuae I have no technical perspective[:)]) but the program (and my computer) perform much better with 64 bit. I do know that part of the reason is that with the 32 bit version, my latop was only using 2.87 Gb's of available ram; with 64 bit it is using 3.87 Gb's. I am sure that makes some difference.

Based on my experience I recommend upgrading if you can.

I have the same experience. I think the main reason of improved performance is better use of RAM. I have 4GB now and Win 7 64bit use it all, what looks important in Logos 4 case. I also recommend the upgrade.

Windows 7 64 bit version will only give you access to 4 gig or more of RAM if your motherboard's memory controller is able to address more than 4 gig. e.g I have three desktops (my home and office systems and my wife's) that are all running Windows 7 64 bit OS. They are all equipped with 4 gig of RAM and Core 2 Duo CPU's. But only 3.12 to 3.25 gig is available to the OS on these systems. The reason is that discrete devices such as the graphics cards, Firewire cards and other such devices are mapped below the 4 gig limitation of the motherboard. If your motherboard can support more than 4 gig then any discrete devices will be mapped above the 4 gig level thus giving your OS access to all available RAM.

It is a fine distinction but one that needs to be mentioned since there are still a huge number of motherboards that only support 4 gig.
