Maybe just to add to the discussion and consideration of Logos.

My guess is that I used this many credits, because I have been reading a lot on my Android devices. In the android app is the possibility to show the translation card.. But everytime I wanted to highlite a word of sentence, a pop up shows with the option to highlite, but automatically also a translation of the word/ sentence that I wanted to highlite is shown, although I only wanted to highlite the word/ sentence and was not in need of translation, I probably did use AI credits.

The only way to use the translation card is to opt the option in (in settings), but than it will show everytime you select a word and uses AI credits. Although Logos thinks that they are generous to Logos users, this means that you shouldn't read or highlite to much, because this will use a lot of AI credits, that you do not want to use.

So now I opted out of the translation card, but than it misses the goal. Opting in means automatically using AI credits that I do not want to use. Opting out won't use those AI credits, but than I can't use this option very good. It is a little bit to much work to opt in everytime I want to translate a word and opt out afterwards again.

If you use AI credits with highliting or researching a word in the logos app, because you use the translation card, then this option isn't working for me.

Because I do not want to overuse my AI credits I have to opt out of the option of translation (which is probably introduces for the non English speaking users of Logos). The only way to use the translation card is to opt in, and then you'll quickly use a lot of AI credits without making use of them. At least the way I'm reading my books on my Android devices.

(so it is not a hypothetical case that an English speaking person wants to translate complete Latin books [;)], but a real case.

Is there a way to check how close I am to the usage limit on AI tools for the month before the warning?  And am I correct that when it says "each month" it means subscription month (ie. renews 5th of each month) or does it mean calendar month (ie. Oct 1-31)? Thanks.

    I second that.

A small bar above that indicates the percentage would be great. Like the loading bar in Safari or something similar.

It would also be nice to see a report or summary separating the use of credits between AI and translation as these are fundamentally different use cases and it would help users track down unexpected usages such as the OP experienced.

My initial suggestion was ignored so I demure to offer another possible resolution to this issue. I think it may be considered that when a user has reached their limit; some determination be made of the further cost of use. In other words offer an incremental charge for further usage.

Meanwhile, Jesus kept on growing wiser and more mature, and in favor with God and his fellow man.

How would Logos define a "foreigner" or someone coming from "abroad"?

If, as a 'foreigner' to Latin, I suddenly get the desire to read all the Latin books in my library (who knows, an insane idea like this may enter my head one day), do I then become eligible for more translation credits from Logos?

Since when is it Logos' responsibility to provide on the fly translations of works for users? It seems to me that it is entirely my own responsibility to figure out how to have someone provide a simultaneous translation when I want to read a book in a language I don't speak and understand.  Do folks here buy printed books in languages that are foreign? If so, how do you read those books then?

Perhaps this matter of outside AI translation (DeepL contract) being provided by Logos is something which Logos should not have touched as it seems that customers have somewhat of a faulty idea of for what this "translation tool" was really meant to be used ?

I speak English and German and I am familiar to some degree with biblical Greek, thus I purchase and read material in those languages ... and leave it at that.

Wolfgang... that's a strange reply?  Translation of resources for the language-challenged was an early on Logos goal. Christian writings aren't just 2 or 3 languages and you're done?

@Wolfgang Schneider I'm at a lost as to why you singled out my response for interrogation (😛); I was responding to someone who seemed to imply (to my mind, anyway) that they should be entitled to more credits because of a type of 'special status' (my words, not theirs), and I was querying how Logos would determine eligibility for this status. Nevertheless ...

Since when is it Logos' responsibility to provide on the fly translations of works for users?

It is their responsibility when they sell me a translation feature that promises such.

Do folks here buy printed books in languages that are foreign? If so, how do you read those books then?

I wouldn't buy a print book in a language I have no familiarity with, but if it were a book I really wanted to read, I would certainly buy it in electronic format because I can find a way to get it translated, whether is it through the feature Logos sold to me, or through some other means (like Google Translate etc).

... it seems that customers have somewhat of a faulty idea of for what this "translation tool" was really meant to be used ?

Logos said, "You can automatically translate the text of your resources into more than a hundred languages in the right-hand Translation panel, opening up a whole new world of resources" (along with some caveats). That seems clear enough; your text (paragraphs or whole books) and your credits. However, I would still like to hear your thoughts on how the feature was really meant to be used.

i must say you have more faith in AI translation than I despite my having books in a number of languages I don't read. I use the translation tool on bit and pieces ... and use common sense and research to verify.

No faith involved; truth be told, I rarely do anything with the translation tool. I have yet to come across a book in a foreign language that I would want to use it on entirely (but it could happen 😛). I sometimes find myself needing translation for text in footnotes, which the tool does not access, so I always need to go outside Logos for that anyway. My point, however, is that I paid for the tool, the credits are mine, and I am free to use it on whatever it can work on. Whether the translation is reliable ... that's a whole other story.

There are Christian writings in many languages ... and many of the more important ones have been professionally translated and published in other languages for the benefit of those who may not speak the language of the original writing. I don't think it was Logos' goal by offering an AI tool by an outside company to provide an actual translation of resources as one can see from the limits of credits that are involved; in addition, I don't think that such AI translation as provided is of the quality needed for a proper translation of a resource.

But then, having worked as a translator for many years (now retired), I may just have a different concept for translations in my mind ...

@Yasmin Stephen ... no interrogation intended, your reply post to someone else's post "inspired" my few thoughts about the matter which I then mentioned

Since when is it Logos' responsibility to provide on the fly translations of works for users?

It is their responsibility when they sell me a translation feature that promises such.

My question then is whether such should have been promised ... as it seemed to me that customers could misunderstand the intent and extent of their promise ?

Do folks here buy printed books in languages that are foreign? If so, how do you read those books then?

I wouldn't buy a print book in a language I have no familiarity with, but if it were a book I really wanted to read, I would certainly buy it in electronic format because I can find a way to get it translated, whether is it through the feature Logos sold to me, or through some other means (like Google Translate etc).

Indeed ... we differ perhaps in the one point that I would not even consider the AI tool in Logos to be intended for such "full translation" purpose

... it seems that customers have somewhat of a faulty idea of for what this "translation tool" was really meant to be used ?

The quote of what Logos announced there, I would consider to be more of a marketing propaganda statement than a plain factual information of what they really meant concerning how that AI tool could and should be used. I don' think they really meant that I could open a large Bible commentary in English and have the AI tool translate it for me into German ... as I would not get far with the credits available, nor would the translation be of an appropriate quality ...

Well, like using a translation tool, you'd need to verify your 'don't think's?  Actually there's several paper tigers among the posts, attempting to be shot.  Given that Logos apparently scans usage with a regularity (in order to warn the customer), placing it at the customer's paws might not be too risky.

Not every important Christian work is professionally translated in more than 100 languages. Depending on what you plan to do with the translated text, I think AI translation is better than no access to the book in your language.

The quote of what Logos announced there, I would consider to be more of a marketing propaganda statement than a plain factual information of what they really meant concerning how that AI tool could and should be used. I don' think they really meant that I could ...

With regard with to the bolded parts, you lost me completely. I'll be the first to say that Logos is too prone to ambiguous/imprecise communication, but I did not think there could be hidden meaning behind this simple announcement. For my part, I don't think Logos cares what I'm doing with the translation tool except to cut me off if I exceed my allotment of monthly AI credits. I have to use my own judgment on how to use the tool (whole books or random paragraphs?) and what level of trust I allocate to the output.

Yes, it is your own responsibility, but my challgenge is that even when I'm not using the AI credits, I'm still using them.

When I'm reading my book on my android tablet or phone (which I do my reading on), then everytime I want to Highlite someting, I select the word or sentence. Then a window pops up in which I can select the color to highlite it. But in that same window the AI translation tool is also translating the sentence, which are AI credits that I'm using, while not making use of it, because I do not read the translation, because I only wanted to highlite the text.

And Yes, I know that I can opt out of the possibility to use AI translation, then I won't use AI credits, but then I cannot make use of the tool when I want to use it, unless everytime I need translation, I'll have to go to the settings, opt in, go back to the book, read the translation, and then opt out again in the settings. But this way the AI translation tool is not workable. Also, because you can opt in this function, it was meant to be on always when you select a word or sentence, this is how Logos thought AI translation would best serve their users, to be always on. So the way it is functioning now, it uses AI credits while not making use of them.

When I'm studying or preparing a sermon, I'm highliting a lot of books on my Android tablet (boox), and then I use a lot of AI credits without making use of them (this is the reason why I started this thread about AI credits).

A solution would be that you select a word or sentence and then when the window pops up, you can click on a AI translation posibility. That way I'm in charge of my AI credits.
Or give more credits to everybody, because probably only a small group of people will 'overuse' the maximum set, or give more credits to people for who English is not their first language (because most books in Logos ar in English), but this is maybe arbitrary.

Hopefully this post makes sense, because English is my second language (maybe you can use some AI translation credits to translate it to Dutch and then back to English to understand what I'm trying to say [;)]).

Just curious, what package do you have? Supposedly the higher the subscription level, the more credits you are given.

Have you reported this as a bug in the mobile apps forum?

No I haven't, so maybe I should. Probably technically it is not a bug, but my feeling is that they haven't seen this 'flaw' in the system that you also use AI credits without making use of them. So I'll do that and see if it is picked up.

I was hoping that this thread would alarm Logos also.

It looks like we automatically show the translation card after your first use of the translation feature. But if you go into the menu on the card and tap on translation settings, you can disable the card to make it stop automatically showing up.

It might be handy to offer a credits counter on the main toolbar. Maybe put a circle around our profile pictures that starts off blue and inches down as we use more credits, going solid grayed out when the credits are used up.

Clicking on our profile picture would add a "Credits" option to the account menu with the percent of credits either used or remaining per month.

There has been some discussion on a counter with Mark Barnes in another thread and it seemed like this was something Logos was now considering. I like the idea of  putting it as a circle around our profile picture.
