Bringing Your BibleWorks User Content to Logos

Since BibleWorks is closing, many BibleWorks users are trying to figure out what to do with their notes and other user content they’ve invested into the platform for years or decades.

We are working on a tool that will allow you to import your BibleWorks notes and some other user content into Logos. We don’t yet have a timeframe for making this publicly available or a complete list of the content we’ll allow you to import. We’re still investigating the possibilities. We’ll share updates here in the forums when we have more information about what you’ll be able to import and when it will be ready. If you’re interested in helping us test the importer before it’s publicly available, let us know.

Oh, the irony!! Customers of a competing software package can import their notes into Logos, but I can't import my L3 notes into L7. So much for brand-loyal customer support!

How much would you be willing to pay to have your notes and highlights from an old Bible transferred? What if the book was damaged or destroyed in the process?

The Libronix servers are no longer operational, but import notes is a completely offline operation that only depends on Logos 7 finding your Libronix DLS note files in My Documents\Libronix DLS\Annotations. As far as I know, all the Libronix DLS import code is still present and working fine. Please let us know if you encounter any import problems and upload log files (they will be very helpful).

I have been a BibleWorks user since 2000 and, so, was quite sad to learn of its. I am obviously quite invested in the program, both financially and in terms of the sheer amount of time I have spent in the program. Although I have had a license for Logos for a few years now, I am only now starting to make use of the program in earnest. Logos will replace BibleWorks in my work flow. One BibleWorks feature that I have found to be indispensable over the years is the Report Generator. For those of you who are familiar with BibleWorks, is this something that can duplicated in Logos? I know that I can find the same information in Logos (the "Word By Word" feature), but I cannot find a way to format this information in manner in which I have grown accustomed.

Please forgive me if this post is off-topic. I need some help with this and this seemed like to most likely place to post.

One BibleWorks feature that I have found to be indispensable over the years is the Report Generator. For those of you who are familiar with BibleWorks, is this something that can duplicated in Logos?

I don't know what this does - but if you can outline it we can think about options.

@Mark Fuss, a few years ago I made the same transition you're making, from using BibleWorks for all textual work to using Logos for that work. Logos has a slightly different approach here. It "generates reports" in its guides. The Exegetical Guide is probably the closest approximation, and you can watch a training video on that tool here:

The tool looks up lexemes automatically, provides links to textual-critical information, shows where your passage is discussed in grammars, and does other great stuff. And the guide is editable, just like the BibleWorks Report Generator. You can customize any of our guides, in fact. But I'd start with the Exegetical Guide if you like the Report Generator in BW.

My observation from what I’ve seen: I guess either there aren’t that many BibleWorks users moving to Logos or the “A” company took them all since they created their notes import tool within a matter of just a few short days after BW’s demise. In other words, Logos is taking too long to make this tool available thus making the competition look more appealing to those who want to import their notes now and not later. We've actually had quite a few BW users get a Logos package, but I'd guess most of them aren't on our forums.

I was hoping some of the forum regulars were previous BW users (as I was years ago) or have used BW alongside Logos and were interested in bringing their notes over and helping us test it before we ship it to everyone.

I think we've worked out the issues through internal testing, so we're probably in good shape. But it's always good to have extra testers give it a try to make sure we didn't miss anything.

I believe we fixed the issues, but I'll have to check to be sure. If you import and notice problems, let us know. It's super easy to deleted the imported notebook and then reimport later. There's really no risk to importing just to try it out.

I'm replying to this older thread. I've been an avid user of BibleWorks for 11 years and have an incredible amount of notes tied up in it. I just purchased Logos 9 Diamond this week. I have used the command "Import BibleWorks from [path]", but the results were unexpected.

In BibleWorks, there are chapter notes and verse notes. I used the chapter notes feature for extended commentary and the verse notes mostly for tagging subjects such as #TRINITY. In all, BibleWorks generated over 4,400 files of my notes, each chapter and verse generating a separate file.

Using the command to import, only the verse notes were imported AND they are not tied to verses, so there are simply notes with #TRINITY or some other personal tag or verse note, but not at all useful since they are not linked to verses.

None of the chapter notes were imported. This would be the bulk of my eleven years worth of work. So I would really like to see this work.

I have also generated my own cross-references in BibleWorks, making connections that I see when reading the rereading the Bible. That would also be a welcome import.

I would appreciate any help on this matter. Thank you.

Just wanted to commiserate. I've used BW forever. Opposite of you, most of my work is in verse by verse. I've said it's like having a Bible with an infinitely wide margin. I have a treasure trove of material in those notes -- material from lexica, journal articles, web articles, personal insights, pictures, diagrams, tables, and on and on and on. So if you had 4400 chapter notes, I'd probably have 440,000 individual verse notes, anchored to nothing! [:O]

I was literally looking into bequeathing it to a young pastor for use after my death, when BW announced it was simply toggling off. They were such good, good brothers; but it felt like betrayal.

So I just continue to work in both. Logos is an amazing, amazing resource. But it doesn't handle those notes like BW, tying them to verses like that. I wish there were a way to convert them and make it work.

If there is a way to make a pdf copy of your notes in BibleWorks so you at the very least do not lose your notes, that would be the first thing I would do.

This is also what I want to always have the ability to do in Logos: to take all my notes and make one pdf copy so the notes are preserved outside the software.

Hopefully Faithlife will be able to help you transfer all the notes. But it is a comfort at least if you are able to have a pdf copy of them.

Thank you, Daniel. I have been trying different ways of moving the text. The BibleWorks Report Generator is a possibility. If you uncheck the report options, remove versions, use Analyze a Greek version for the Old Testament, then do a second report on the New Testament using a Hebrew version to analyze (because it insists and you don't want that information in your report), you can generate two reports that will then need to be cleaned up because many literal lines are generated for each verse.

A second method is to download Accordance Lite. It's free. It does a good job of importing the BibleWorks files, both chapter and verse files in biblical order, except it loses any table formats and images that you may have copied into BibleWorks. Then it does what we would have liked Logos to do: your notes run alongside the biblical text. This can be copied (500 verses max at a time) and pasted into Logos. I do not know what the file size limitations might be. The notes do NOT run alongside the text and I do not know how to anchor them to the text. Logos does however recognize references within the text and will link in that way.

Logos indicated that it could import BibleWorks notes (https://support.logos.com/hc/en-us/articles/360016299072-Import-BibleWorks-Notes-into-Logos), but only verse notes were imported through my several attempts, and they were useless because they are not linked to the text.

I would have thought that Logos users would want to write their own commentaries on large passages, chapters and books, and be able to reread those notes without clicking on little icons in the text. I am surprised that this is not a standard function and that the notes do not track with the text. Maybe Logos 10?

Having said that, the wealth of information is an enormous help. But I will probably continue using BibleWorks alongside Logos.

So far I am not seeing any response. I've typed
"Import BibleWorks from /Users/jgaryellison/Desktop/notes/" and
"Import BibleWorks Notes from /Users/jgaryellison/Desktop/notes/

Whether I hit Return or Go does not seem to matter. There is no feedback, and then there are no new Notebooks or "Imported Notes" under Docs, and nothing from Today.

Question: would my Logos get the update on the bug that you just fixed?

I have 982 chapter notes and about 3,500 verse notes.

It looks like the upload might be taking too long. That's something we should fix, but you might be able to work around the issue by importing fewer notes at a time. Since there is no progress indicator, after you type the import command, be sure to leave Logos running for 5 minutes or more before closing Logos or trying another import.

I'm on a Mac. I used BibleWorks with VMware Fusion, but have copied the Notes directory (folder) over to my desktop, so /Users/jgaryellison/Desktop/notes/ is the full path.

I have been able to group some of the files in folders and am seeing some success. The chapter notes are appearing at the heads of chapters, so that is very good. It still is taking many attempts and only small uploads at a time.

I keep getting the sync logo with a red ! in the center even when trying a small upload. It is a problem with my Internet.

I pay $100 a month and am supposed to get 1MB of speed, but it's more like 500K. Yes, that's right. Internet is very expensive in the third world (Republic of Vanuatu).

I am happy to see the chapter notes that have synced and attached to their chapters. I am hoping that the verse notes will also be attached to verses.

I have been able to import 833 chapter notes from BibleWorks and they are correctly linked to the biblical text. Logos imported formatting (bold and colors). It is also importing tables as tables. Yeah! Images have to be imported using "Insert media."

I have had to do it in multiple imports, importing 50 or so files at a time, but it worked. That is very helpful with the transition!

I am still wondering how to import the verse files so that they are correctly linked to verses. Right now they are simply "floating logions," unanchored to the biblical text. I could batch rename the files to export. I tried renaming 1 Timothy files 1TI1_8.bww, 1TI1_15.bww, etc. from their original names in the 1TI folder. They imported, but are still unlinked to verses. Since chapter notes can be imported and linked to chapters, there must be a way that Logos can link verse notes to verses.

I'm very happy that I can see my previous chapter work in Logos 9. That's is a big advance. Please help me figure out how to import the verse notes.

The 1TI folder must be inside the folder that you import. So if the note file is /Users/jgaryellison/Desktop/notebatch/1TI/1_8.bww, you have to import bibleworks from /Users/jgaryellison/Desktop/notebatch. import bibleworks from /Users/jgaryellison/Desktop/notebatch/1TI will not link the verses.

Thanks for your help, Ed. I was not able to get to work, but I was able to manually enter 2,875 verse-note files using a macro program. I set it to work overnight and it was finished when I got up in the morning. I have over 350 topics in those verses, such as "asides" in the Gospel of John, Mormonism, the Trinity, etc. I can now continue the work in Logos.

I'm wondering how you've been doing, since, J. Gary. I've just stubbornly continued using BW and Logos, but am seeing I should figure out how to move over entirely to Logos. This is a massive change for me.

I'm wondering how imported notes would work, or whether it'd be better just to merge the rtf files into Word documents, and use that alongside. The obvious "plus" = full-featured Word processor. Obvious minus = 66 files!

Hi Dan. BibleWorks definitely has some features that I miss in Logos such as quick and easy cross-referencing enabling the user to quickly create his own cross-references (plural!), instant hover and search listing as per user defined filter, and instant wordlists by chapter, book, section, etc. Nothing to set up, no steps to take, it's just there. I do miss those features.

However, Logos offers so many resources and structures in sermon planning, PowerPoint production, and other ways, that it is a truly amazing program. Logos has found the secret to funding further development through digitalized resources.

It has been so long since I transitioned from BibleWorks, that I don't remember all the details of importing what I call the chapter notes and the verse notes. The chapter notes imported easily. This Logos link gives the steps: https://www.logos.com/bibleworks

You can now import BibleWorks notes into Logos using the new Notes tool, included with your BW Crossgrade. Here's how it works:

Type “import BibleWorks notes” in the Command box and press Enter. (If your notes are stored in a custom location, type “import BibleWorks notes from [path]” in the Command box and press Enter.)
Logos will import your notes and store them in a new notebook titled “Imported Notes.” Depending on the volume of your notes, this may take some time.
To find the notes you’ve imported, click Tools > Notes. Open the Notes tool sidebar and search for “Imported Notes.

Concerning the verse notes, I changed the BWW extensions to RTF (and renamed them all to reflect the verse with which they should be linked. Most of them were simply "tags" (#Trinity, #Asides (Johannine), etc. Then I used a Keyboard Maestro macro and imported them one by one (basically Copy/Paste) on the basis of the names of each file. I had the content of 2,875 separate files to transfer. Keyboard Maestro worked through the night and did the work file by file. It was not pretty, but it worked.

There might be another option as you mentioned merging the 66 files. In uploading Personal Books, there are several options under Type including Bible Commentary, Commentary, Bible Notes. I've never used them, so I do not know how they work, but someone might be able to make a suggestion on how to prepare the file (66 files in one) for integration, assuming one of those options would work. It would probably function like a linked Bible commentary so you could see your notes in a separate panel. You would not be able to edit them unless you edit your base file (66 in one) and uploaded it through Personal Books again.

I am new to Logos and have been looking for help for a while now to get my personal database and my OliveTree notes and highlights with correct colors into Logos. I am getting closer, but still no joy. I too am on a mac and so the "path" is not as intuitive as on a PC. I need help and am hoping you can share what you've learned about direct import, but I also am a Keyboard Maestro user and am very familiar with it. I am very intrigued by your KM solution. Could you please share it as well? I have not looked at doing it that way yet, but thought I could probably cut through a lot of trial and error in my effort with help from you. I have a version of Olive Tree that I have almost never used on my Mac. But I do not see where user information is stored. In BibleWorks, every note was a separate RTF file, though the extension was BWW. So I used a macro to rename each note file with something that would work in Logos. I think (it's been three years now) I then created a Keyboard Maestro routine to use the filename to find the corresponding reference in Logos, then go and get the contents of the BibleWorks note and copy the contents into the new Logos note. Then I enclosed the whole routine in a WHILE command, moving through each of the files one by one. It was very amateurish.

Looking at the few notes that I have in Olive Tree, I am not sure how to go about copying them to Logos because I only see them in Olive Tree, and it opens and closes each note, not allowing you to navigate automatically through the notes. If there is a way to export the notes to a file, it might be easier. Otherwise, I'm guessing it will be a more manual note by note process.

I'm sorry that I don't have a better solution. Perhaps technical support would have an idea. The Lord bless you.

Hello again, and thank you again for getting back to me and for sharing your process to load your BibleWorks content into Logos. I found that if you log into your Olive Tree account on the web, there is an option there to download your content to a CSV file. It is this content I am trying to reconfigure to the BibleWorks .rtf format for importing into Logos. I am making progress as I figured out how to get my notes from the Olive Tree format to the BibleWorks format. If I may trouble you once more please, can you share with me a BibleWorks .bww or .rtf file that includes highlighting details. I have come up blank trying to figure it out and I have hundreds of highlights I'd like to preserve.

One other request, if you still have your Keyboard Maestro macro that you used to update Logos highlighting, can you please send it to me in text form. If you select all of the steps in your macro and then right click on them, you can copy the steps as text and paste it into a reply to me. I can learn a lot from your efforts if the work wasn't deleted. No worries if it has been.

I've attached a Heb6.rtf file while maintained the colored font when copied to Logos. I think it was probably named Heb 6.rtf during the transition so that Heb 6 could be copied into the active search field and a new note could be created.7612.Heb6.rtf

Hi Thomas - Did you ever figure out the structure of the BibleWorks files? I'd like to import some other data into Logos as notes. The BibleWorks import seems like the only way to do it, but I don't know what the structure of the BibleWorks notes files was. If you could help me, I'd be grateful.

Hello, Ethan.

I imported my Bibleworks notes last year without any problem. Bibleworks notes files are rich text files with a .bww extension instead of an .rtf extension. The key to importing chapter and verse notes is to maintain the folder and naming scheme that was used by Bibleworks. There is no internal designation for chapter and verse inside the file, unless you added it yourself.

So the RTF file would just have the text of the note? What about the name of the file to the left of the extension? Was that used for anything?

Can you give me an example of the directory structure? Was it as simple as:

C:\[BibleWorks_Directory]\John\3\16

What about books with numbers preceding them? Maybe 1_John, 2_John?

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
