Also, if you're a Parallels or VMWare user, many Mac users have decided to install the Windows version of Logos 4 under a VM. There are a couple of threads in the forums that are linked in the FAQ in my signature.

Will there be an e-mail announcement when Logos 4 Mac is gone to Beta (or better yet when it is fully functional)? Rather than hang around a blog site (no offence meant) is there somewhere I can sign up to be e-mailed when it's up & running?
Currently running Logos 3 on the mac and Logos 4 on a really old, very slow PC laptop.

You can subscribe to the Logos blog via email in the right hand column. http://blog.logos.com/ The only trouble with this is that you will get all the other Logos news. That isn't a bad thing, it's just that it isn't exclusively dedicated to the development of Logos 4 Mac.

I've just bought Logos 4 and it's very hard to use. I have Accordance as a back up but you mentioned Parallels and Windows. Does Logos 4 work OK there? You also mentioned Logos 1.1 (was it?) Is there an older format that can help get me started into the Logos Library?

L4Mac is still in Alpha (not ready for real use), L4 works great in Parallels or Fusion. I would (and am) run L4 windows before I would run Mac 1.2, no comparison as to the feature set.

I have Windows XL (disc) but it refuses to install into Parallels (On my Macbook); I don't use Windows. What is L4 Windows?

Oops! I guess you mean Logos 4 Windows. I'm tossing up whether to get a Windows version or just use the other Bible Study program until the Logos Mac version happens

Your choice, but the L4 Windows and L4Mac are using the same feature set, so any learning that you do on L4Win, will be just as useful for L4Mac. Plus, you get the fun of hunting down the L4Mac bugs and stomping on them.
Don't forget that if when you buy L4, you get both the Mac and the Windows versions on the same license.

Do you mean Windows XP? What problems are you having loading it into Parallels? Which version of Parallels?

I am using L4 Windows under Parallels and Windows XP. Several people on these forums have said that Windows 7 is faster, but I am getting satisfactory service from XP. If you do not presently own a copy of Windows, and want to run L4 on Windows, I would recommend Windows 7, as XP is a dead-end and Vista drove a lot of long-time Windows users to the Mac.
Feel free to ask all the questions you have.
OOPS. I did not really answer your question. I have never used Boot Camp, but I am now running Windows under Parallels 5 and getting very good performance from Logos 4. Parallels gives you the advantage of having both Operating Systems available at the same time.

Ron, I certainly wouldn't spend that much money to buy Windows just so you can run the full version of L4 a couple of months earlier than you'll be able to run it in OSX. If you're like me you switched to Mac because you got tired of dealing with lousy MS software. I'm not about to put a MS OS on my Mac. I would advise that you just be patient and let the Logos team finish L4 for Mac.

me too; I abandoned the Windows ship because of Windows, so am really looking fwd to "feature parity" on Logos.

I bought the Mac because it was better, I bought the Logos software 2000 dollar version for Mac and was never told about the Alpha version, thought that to be a little crazy, They sent me like four different versions of Logos, so I put it on my Mac and a PC. Lucky I had a PC or I would have been very disappointed. Great software though. IS PC Four running fully yet or they still working on things? thanks guys.

The Mac version is in Alpha. Sorry you didn't know what to expect. We have put together a small page on it here: http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_4_Mac Like you, we are more than a little anxious to see Logos 4 Mac to hit the beta and final release stages. When this will be done, remains yet to be seen... though it has made huge progress in the last seven weeks.
Hang in there and if there is anything we can do to ease the L4 Mac pain, just let us know.

Hey, I'm a dedicated Mac user. I certainly appreciate the response and input from everyone.
I'm also a bible teacher and can't wait to get into the excellent Logos library.

At this stage of development I can not see 6 months as a possible release date. As useless as these alphas currently are it looks to me to be more in the 18 month - 24 month time frame before a final product release. Maybe 6 to 8 months before a good beta.
I do hope I am wrong, but after spending time with A5 - A9 it is very clear to me that L4M is a loooong, long way from being complete.

Gary, what you may not be taking into consideration is that the Mac team is only working on the UI that interfaces the common code of L4. So, while they have no easy job, there is a large body of code that is already been implemented in L4Win, they are finding ways to interact with it on the Mac side. So, while I don't know how long it will really take, I would be willing to be that Bob's estimate is not that far off.

Yeah, I think Gary is assuming that they have to code every feature from scratch. It's only the UI that needs to be finished. Still not an easy task, but certainly doable in 6 months or so.

How familiar are you with writing code and software development? What is your background in this area?
Have you ever participated in an Alpha / Beta project like this before? How long ago.

I code for the Mac platform nearly everyday of my life for the last 8 years. I have experience in starting projects from scratch and following them though completion (if there is such a thing). I do create products for public consumption in the Mac community .... some of them you may be familiar with.
I code in Obj-C, Obj-j, Realbasic, .... not to mention javascript, html, & css.
I was not intending to slam Logos 4 for Mac ... I was just making an observation that it looks to me to have too many things not yet completed to have wrapped up in 6 months. An application the size of Logos 4 for Mac is no small feat.
As for participating in Alpha/Beta testing ... I regularly participate in many of them from both sides of the spectrum ... as the one testing the releases and the one providing the releases.

Again, I apologize if my remarks were offensive to anyone they were not intended that way. Its just that I do realize how great of an undertaking building an app like Logos 4 really is.
Perhaps what i have not taken into account is the development team of L4M. I made assumptions based purely on what I see in the alpha releases. I am quite certain that the developers that Logos has employed for this great task are more than qualified and motivated.
I take back my 18 - 24 month time frame

Hi Gary, I think you read some sarcasm into my comment I did not intend. Twice now you have apologized if your comments were offensive, so please let me assure you they were not offensive in any way. You were just sharing your educated guess on development. There is no shame in that brother. And I was totally serious in my last comment as well. I am looking for a win win! Logos needs skilled developers, you have skills. If you were right in your timeline, then join the Logos team and make sure we reach the 6 month timeline. Users, like me, win for getting it faster, and you wont need to eat crow for guessing to long since your skills would have helped speed up the timeline. That is a win all around!!! :-)

Unfortunately many people are complaining, so let me toss in my sincere "Thank You." I originately started my experience with "CD Word" produced by Dallas Theological Seminary, Partially panicked when i read that Dallas Theological was dropping or selling the CD Word, until I talked either to you or the other half of your staff during those early days. Both of you were working out of a basement. You heard of my concern, and assured me that when you were ready with the new LOGOS Produce, you would grandfather me in. Every since then, you have allowed me to fly at no cost, until I recently upgraded, which I am very thankful. I also recently upgraded from PC to MAC, and I am very appreciative that I have a working MAC "alpha" version to work with while you guys continue to master the MAC coding. I am less than 3 months from turning to 70 years of age, so don't take too long. <grin>

I've been using Logos a long time, too! I bought my first program while at Asbury Theological Seminary (1995-1997) on the recommendation of Dr. Ben Witherington III. I've loved it, even more than Hermanuetica, which I tried for a while.
I hate Mac always being the "red-headed step-child," but that may also be the reason why the virus people leave us alone. I'm sure the team will get us up to speed ASAP.
Do you guys have someone who can help us run a Windows version in a partition?

Are you wanting to run Windows on your Mac? You can use an emulator to create a virtual machine. This would allow you to run both Mac and Windows at the same time on the same computer. There are three of these available: 1) Parallels 5 (see the second link in my signature for setup hints), 2) VMWare Fusion 3, and 3) Virtual Box. Parallels and Fusion are commercial products, and either one will give good service. I know nothing about Virtual Box.
As an alternative, you can create a Boot Camp partition and run either Mac or Windows, but not both at the same time. Its advantage is that it will run Windows faster.
If you have further questions, you should start a new thread as your post could easily be lost in this very old, long dead thread.

I'm running XP in VirtualBox on my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. Logos 4 seems to work just fine for my setup.

I have never been able to get the program to run under VMware. I tried again this morning with the latest beta. Still no success. I have done many different types of tries, but for some reason, it gives me an error message, invites me to sent the info to Windows, and quits.

Phil, I looked at your posts and could see where you started a thread on that problem. Why not start that thread, gives us the specs and versions of the software you are using and let us take a stab at getting you up and running?

Yeah, that is the nature of software development. I have a little bit of experience within the field, and I will never forget what my boss told me once. Translated to english it would be something like: "When you estimate the time that you need, begin with the estimate. Then multiply the time you estimated with pi (3.14). Then finally add another 20%. It always takes much longer than what you think"

I was just able to connect to a high speed connection and download Alpha 20 for the fun of it. (I had Alpha 12) It has made good progress, but it seemed to me that we would be looking at this autumn before we hit beta stage.

I'm using Logos 4.0 for an online Hebrew class and have been able to do most of the work on my Mac. With the help option still not working I've had to do a few things on the PC version. But now I've hit the big road block. I need to use the Interlinear function a lot and I'm just curious if anyone knows how long it will be until that is working. Thanks!

Interlinears are now working in A21. You can have a traditional display or the new bottom display. The reverse interlinears are working in all of NRSV; ESV and i think NASB. only NT on NIV, NLT and the others.
