How are points earned in the new forums?
When Logos transitioned to the new forums platform, within a few hours I was notified that I received a certain number of points for doing certain activities. I got a message that I needed to do a certain activities to advance to the next level. Since then, I have heard nothing about points.
It is not clear how one earns additional points to earn more "stars" in the forums. If this feature is intended to encourage participation in the forums, the activities one must do advance should be clearer. Perhaps the user could see their progress to the next level.

Every new member begins at Level 0 as a “New Member” and can progress through five main levels. As members participate—answering questions and interacting with others—they earn points that increase their rank (e.g. when a member’s post receives a reaction, they earn one point). To travel up the ranks quickly, continue to share within and support the community regularly.

Agree with your point, though (no offense) I think it (the awards system) is silly.
And you do know, you got the 'Name Dropper' award? As well as, mousing over the awards shows the levels. But I'm guessing that's not what you're talking about.

The challenge with gamifying forum contributions is that it can spur users to post content to run up a score through post volume or reactions.
My primary purpose in participating in this community is to learn how to use Logos more effectively and discuss the future direction of computer-assisted Biblical studies.
I welcome a bit of fun amid what can sometimes be too wooden, but if there is too much noise, it detracts from making it a priority to be here.

I agree. But if it is there, the "rules" of the game should be clear.
The problem with the stars is that it implies that a 2 star person might not be a reliable source of information, just as I would probably not want to trust my life to a 2 star surgeon. Other forums with levels of users use silly titles rather than stars.

Ok … took me awhile. Are we talking those little asterisks after post count? I thought those were just line filler.
If indeed 'stars', they're an embarrassment (to me). A Harry comment is worth 10x a DMB comment (at least). And so on. I'd even say a newbie comment is quite valuable, by virtue of being fresh eyes and good observations.

I don’t care about points or badges to be honest. It might create an unhealthy sense of competition among some users.

Maybe Stars are divisors rather than multipliers and answer values actually go the other way.

If you mouse over it just right, it says "Level 2" or "Level 3," or, for those with the distinguished laurel, "MVP." I assumed that it was 2 stars for more than 100 posts and 3 stars for more than 1,000. I wonder if the new forum fixed the problem where a changed email reset your post count. I don't know if mine ever got corrected or not, but unless they motivate me with the possibility of 4 stars, I guess I don't care. 😂

How to earn points is still pretty ambiguous. It appears that there is no direct correlation between number of posts and number of points. Some users with few posts have a higher rank than others with many posts. It sounds like a reaction earns a "point", but it does not say that a post also earns a point. In my profile, as I have submitted posts, the number of points has not gone up proportionately.
It does not appear that the number of posts from the old forum system were counted toward the points.

This isn't mentioned in the documentation, but points are also awarded based on how good-looking the person posting the comment happens to be.

@Harry Hahne, creating and publishing a post doesn’t automatically earn you member points. If that were the case, someone could quickly climb the ranks by posting a bunch of stuff. Instead, members earn points based on how helpful their content is to others. This includes things like answering questions (if their answer gets marked as the best one by the original poster) or getting positive reactions to their comments and posts.
