June 4, 2010 Home Page Shows June 6, 2010, Proper 5

Hi,

This morning, June 4, 2010, my PC Logos opened with a Home page
reporting the wrong date, and perhaps associated front page data. It
says...

Please advise on "fix".

I think you are looking at the Lectionary on the Ribbon .... at the moment they are only for Sundays and other "major" days. If so what you are seeing is correct

I suspect your date is from the lectionary, as on my computer. That is normally the date and readings of the next Sunday, tho it may have a weekday feast like Ascension.

Proper (liturgy), the part of a Christian
liturgy that is specific to the date within the Liturgical Year

That is what Wikipedia says.

It gives a structured set of readings (and certain prayers and other parts of the liturgy) in an ordered way. The Propers apply to "ordinary" Sundays but can be changed by special days ... Christmas, Easter .....

The Canadian Anglican Book of Alternative Services has lots more to say if you are interested.

Not all Propers will be used in any particular year. The "Church year", as I am familiar with it, starts in Advent (end of October or the beginning of November)

The easiest way to think of it is that the text of a liturgy has two parts - the ordinary and the proper. The ordinary is the part that is ordinary - you run into it almost all the time. The proper is the part that changes - it is proper to the date you hear it.

Thank you for the most succinct explanation I have ever read. As someone from a non-liturgical tradition who finds the discipline of the liturgical year helpful both devotionally and also for preaching (in chunks; I've never actually preached through more than a few weeks at a stretch), I find myself at a bit at a loss at the terminology which assumes that I know what it means. Your explanation has plugged a hole in my understanding. Thank you again.
