How do I STOP the "Insights" Sidebar from Opening when Changing Bibles

When using the downward pointing caret (the down-arrow) to the left of the scripture reference in an active Bible tab, to replace the current Bible translation with a different one, the "Insights" sidebar automatically opens when the newly selected Bible translation is displayed. Is there a way to prevent this behavior?

I've tried using the "X" to close the Insights sidebar and I've tried turning the Insights sidebar off via the Insights icon. Both options turn the sidebar off, but it reopens every time I change translations, even when going back to a previous translation for which I had already turned off the sidebar.

I don't see a global settings option to turn it off and keep it off. What am I missing? 😕

There is no global setting. However, you should only have to close it once per Bible as it remembers the last state. If you have a case where it does not remember that you turned it off, report it as a bug.

The insights sidebar should not display again by default in the same Bible after it has been closed in that Bible. This means that you have to close it for each Bible individually. When I was closing the insights panel for all of my English Bibles (because I wanted to change the default behavior for all of them), I noticed that if you close or change the Bible before the progress saves/syncs, then the insights sidebar will indeed open again the next time that Bible is opened. One could manually click the sync button to ensure that this change is properly recognized.

Note that the most recent setting is used as the default for the insights sidebar, so if the insights sidebar is opened again in a Bible, that Bible will return to opening the sidebar by default.

MJ and Aaron, thank you for your feedback.

When I read Aaron's response I was hopeful, so I cycled through every translation in the drop-down list, turning Insights off for each one and then doing a manual sync before opening the next translation. At first I thought that solved it, but it only seemed to stop Insights from reopening on some Bibles—so I tried the whole process again, but waiting longer between changing translations. No change. So I ran through the process one more time, then updated the layout, then restarted Logos. Still no change. A few translations open without Insights, but most (including ESV, NASB95, NLT) continue to open WITH the Insights bar.

I might try creating a new layout to make sure it's not something mucked up with the layout itself. Will update when I know more, and if still a problem, I'll create a bug post.

The Insights sidebar should not be dependent on the layout.

In playing with this some, I found again that the insights sidebar did not perfectly respond to my opening/closing instructions. However, it did respond as expected most of the time. I would be curious to discover why it is not behaving as expected for you so often. Do you have multiple tabs/panels open? Does the behavior change if the Bible is the only tab you have open?

Edit: In my own testing, having the same Bible open in multiple tabs seems to create confusion such that the default behavior for the insights sidebar is less likely to be changed by turning it on/off in one of the Bible tabs.

Try this:

Close all tabs.
Open a Bible
Close the Insights sidebar
Close the Bible
Open the same Bible. The Insights sidebar should not open this time by default.

Does this process work for you? Using this process, there would be no other tabs/panels creating confusion or interference.

Aaron, I haven't tried your last suggestion yet, but I did close the layout I was using , then opened the Logos supplied two-panel layout for a Bible and Commentary, with just one tab in each panel. I got similar results as before—i.e. mixed results depending on the Bible translation.

The offending translations were: ESV, HCSB, NIV (1984), NIV Anglicised (1984), NLT, RSV, NRSV. Turning off Insights and syncing does not stop the Insights bar from opening when those translations are reopened.

I'll do another test following your last suggestion and report back when finished.

I am discovering that the step of closing the Bible after closing the insights panel is very important in achieving consistent results. Closing the Bible appears to save the on/off state of the Insights sidebar. There does appear to be a bug here somewhere that is avoided when one closes the Bible after updating the state of the insights sidebar.

Hi Aaron! Yes, my findings are similar to yours in regard to the status of the Insights panel not "taking" until the Bible is closed. One caveat to note however is that the update to the Insights panel seems to be tied not just to the open/active Bible translation, but also to the "tab" being used to view the Bible.

EXAMPLE:
If the Insights sidebar was on for the ESV but was turned off before changing to another translation, the sidebar would re-appear when switching back to the ESV if the tab for the Bibles had not been closed. But… if the Bible tab was closed without changing back to the ESV, when a new Bible tab was opened, the Insights sidebar would remain off when selecting the ESV until manually turned back on.

I say all that just to point out that the problem translation (the ESV in the example above) didn't have to be the active translation when the Bible tab is closed. The Bible tab DID have to be closed in order for the Insights bar settings to "take" for the ESV, but the ESV did NOT have to be the active translation when the Bible tab was closed in order for the setting to "take".

I see you created a bug report, so thank you for that. Hopefully they'll get it sorted. I often have two or three Bible tabs open at a time, and may use the down-arrow in any or all of them to bounce around between translations while I study, and the panel those Bible tabs are in is usually fairly narrow, making a sidebar not only useless, but a major annoyance when it can't be controlled. The setting for the Insights sidebar should be specific to the tab/translation combo that is active when the sidebar setting is changed, and one should not have to close the Bible tab in order for the Insights setting to stick.

There was a time 'Bibles' were sacrosanct, designwise. Any bug got fixed quick (ok, except the paragraph'ers). Just watching this feature play out (coding, executive rationalizing, etc), those 'sacrosanct' days were in the Golden Era.

Hi, Dave. If the problem turned out to be a bug rather than me just not knowing how to resolve the problem, I planned to submit a bug report that included a pointer/reference to this thread. But Aaron was kind enough to submit a bug report before I did, which included the pointer to this thread via the redirection you noted.

So just to clarify, does Aaron's pointer/reference fully achieve what you have in mind, or is there something else that still needs to be done?

@Rick Ausdahl according to the information in the thread listed below, the Insights sidebar is working as intended. Apparently, by design Logos saves the setting of a panel when it is closed. Therefore, closing the Bible tab is an essential step when updating the default setting for the Insights sidebar for any given Bible.

Wow, I can't get my head around "WHY" Logos would think it's a better idea for a person to have to close and then reopen a tab in order to make the Insights setting stick, rather than to expect a person would simply want it left in the state they last selected. What's the "Use Case" for such logic?
