Passage Lists

Could you make the passage lists easier to use please.

Could you give it subfolders. I've been using them for three days and already my window is filled up with a list of passage lists.

You're supposed to be able to drag and drop scriptures onto an open passage list window but it never works. It just opens the Bible in a new tab.

The right click menu could be better too. I have so many passage lists now, that they get crowded out. The right click menu has an entry limit. So if I want to add a passage to an existing passage list I first have to go to the Documents, find the list, open it, then it registers it in the right click menu. That's too much work. So could you make the three most recent passage lists in there, and/or whatever ones are currently open, and then have a child drop down menu to show all passage lists in a branching tree menu; if we can have subfolders too.

Could we not have to go through the Documents tool to get to our passage lists. I can't seem to put a favorite on the toolbar that goes directly to the passage lists only. The Documents tool is getting swamped with so many things. I don't want to first list hundreds of things at the time that I'm not trying to use right now. As in, not having to filter out other things to use my passage lists. I want a dedicated space for passage lists itself. Unless there is a better way of collecting passages; maybe notebooks. ?

Just a suggestion … breaking out your discussion into concrete changes/additions.

But I agree. Passage Lists are an odd duck in the Logosian culture. For some traditions, they're quite fundamental (easily seen in hard-copy back-of-the-Bible topic lists; which verses get chosen). But in the software, they were (and are) still a catch-as-catch-can.

    • If you right-click a Bible's passage, there's a choice of Passage Lists to add to (but not create).
    • If you do a search, with a list of passages, you can create a new list, not add (extra steps to combine, etc)
    • If you right-click a verse in a non-Bible, you can create a single-verse list, but not add. That's strange.

And so on. Plus the ones you list. My impression is the amalgam of designs were from people who don't use passage lists. Just an impression. Sort of a cold list-management approach.

ADDED: I didn't know 'Passage List' accepts any type of tagged writing … eg greek authors, etc. To me 'passage' is a Bible. But I'm an oldie. Haven't tried what a merge would do.

Also the passage lists have no sorting options. They are not in alphabetical order, no ability to do that, and can't be manually rearranged. There are no columns that we can sort them by our own sort decision, except for date (even then, date what? Date created? No date modified too? To sort by most recent)
C'mon now. This is basic word processing.

In the program settings can you make it that we can choose to disable auto-jumping for these things.
I could set it so when using the right click menu to 'Add To Passage List' it doesn't jump to that passage list. I would have to Ctrl + click that entry when I want it to add it *and jump to it.

    pls pls 🤗

Ok, well if this feature is more of an afterthought; what have people used for systematic theology?
When they run a search and want to collect some passages for a particular topic, what do they use? Notes?

Like the topic of 'Marriage' for example. I do a search on the word and collect everything the Bible says about it, putting it in my passage list: "Marriage". That's how I'm thinking is the most efficient way, to create efficiency when revisiting topics in the future. ?

Well, for one thing, 'passage lists' have not been high on the forum complaint list. So, I don't know (to your questions).

When I designed my own Bible software, passage lists were an early criticality. Lots of efficiency-savers that Logos doesn't have. I suppose, it's since I come from a passage-based tradition.

Not high on the forum complaint list? You mean it's popularity dependent?
Aww c'mon. 😣 Why don't people get it.
Popularity complaints is a really false metric. People don't complain about a feature because people don't use a feature that's bad, so that's why they don't complain about it. Because they don't use it. Most people don't complain at all, they just "vote with their feet". And how are you going to get that data, pray tell?

Some things that are obvious are obvious. Regardless of if many upvotes came in about it or not. I shouldn't have to be at the mercy of the court of public opinion for my software to work properly. Devs should be smarter than the people that they're serving anyway. That's why they have the job. That's why they take home like ten times higher salaries than the janitor (no offense to either). Because at least they can be expected to comprehend extremely basic things like subfolders for passage lists and the problem with jamming the entire Bible onto one scroll bar. 😣

You're supposed to be able to drag and drop scriptures onto an open passage list window but it never works. It just opens the Bible in a new tab.

I just tried drag-and-drop on the current PC data and had no problems. I assume you are highlighting the text you want, grabbing it with a click, and dragging it to the passage list.

Could you give it subfolders. I've been using them for three days and already my window is filled up with a list of passage lists.

Generally, people who want to organize their passage lists use naming conventions (my method) or Favorites (more common I think) to organize them.

The right click menu has an entry limit. So, if I want to add a passage to an existing passage list I first have to go to the Documents, find the list, open it, then it registers it in the right click menu.

The way I work, the last 5 passages lists being shown is sufficient. However, if I were to run into your problem, I would either make a shortcut folder with my passages lists in the order I want. Others would use Favorites for in similar way which has some distinct advantages such as being able to be left open.

For all of these issues, the best approach is to ask questions on the forums and learn how others approach the problem. Someone who uses passage lists in a way more similar to your way, has already worked through these problems and found a workable (not necessarily ideal) solution.

I can't seem to put a favorite on the toolbar that goes directly to the passage lists only

Are you confusing the favorites tool with the shortcut bar? You are correct that the filter is not retained when you create a shortcut. This should be reported as a bug. I've done this

ADDED: I didn't know 'Passage List' accepts any type of tagged writing

The current Passage List has always supported any versified text … something known primarily by users into paraBiblical texts, church fathers, and church documents.

Haven't tried what a merge would do.

The merge function allows one to do Boolean actions on passage lists making the search incredibly versatile.

Also the passage lists have no sorting options. They are not in alphabetical order, no ability to do that, and can't be manually rearranged. There are no columns that we can sort them by our own sort decision, except for date (even then, date what? Date created? No date modified too? To sort by most recent)

You lost me here until I figured out you were no longer talking about actual passage list but were talking about the document menu. It is a cardinal rule of making suggestions that a suggestion deal with a single topic. If you want to cover related topics, do so in a discussion in the English before providing feedback asking for modifications - feedback is single topic.

If I missed any concerns, let me know …

Oh I see what's wrong. Only the first drag and drop onto a new passage list doesn't work. Then it does.

Generally, people who want to organize their passage lists use naming conventions (my method) or Favorites (more common I think) to organize them.

Ya. That would be mostly fine, if we could have more columns; especially a 'Name' column we click it and it would sort alphabetically. Currently it's all over the place; only ordered by most recent.

The way I work, the last 5 passages lists being shown is sufficient. However, if I were to run into your problem, I would either make a shortcut folder with my passages lists in the order I want. Others would use Favorites for in similar way which has some distinct advantages such as being able to be left open.

I didn't think to use favorites for this. That will work, thank you.

You lost me here until I figured out you were no longer talking about actual passage list but were talking about the document menu.

Yes, the documents section. More columns for sorting, please.
Oh wow I just clicked on the 'Name' column and it sorts. So nevermind then. I didn't notice that.

I didn't know I'm supposed to post in the main forum, my fault.

I didn't know I'm supposed to post in the main forum, my fault.

Sometimes posting in feedback to make a suggestion is exactly the right thing to do. But checking with others as to what the system can do, how to do it, and other ways to achieve your goals is a good first step - ask early, before you get frustrated or discouraged. There is no such thing as a dumb question if it relates to using the software.

    @ASUNDER

Just in case you were not aware you can open the Favourites feature under Tool and create folders and sub folders in there and drag your passage lists in there for easy storage and access.

Also, if you right click on a passage in the passage lists you can create headings then drag the passages under the appropriate headings.

Ya. I got a good list going now. You can see why I asked for subfolders.

I'm thinking a kind of quick-find systematic theology. When an issue comes up, a curated raw list of scriptures are seconds away from me at any given time, grouped by that topic. That's the idea. Having studies and commentaries etc. being a separate thing than this passage list system. A different tools for different situations.

Think I'm almost done building it.

This is a great idea! I use the Favorites tool a lot for easy storage (I'm a compartmentalizer!) but I never thought of storing my passage lists in there in this way.

I've recently started thinking that my passage lists are becoming unwieldy and likely to become more so with the new smart Bible search, so now is a good time to 'steal' your idea … thanks for sharing!

You can drag and drop almost any resource in there, even URL links to websites.

how is this possible on mobile or the web app.

I do drag just about everything in there, including weblinks and links to files on my hard drive (PDFs, Word docs, spreadsheets, etc). But, somehow, it never crossed my mind to set up my passage lists in there as well.

Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will come along to answer your question. I use the mobile app as supplementary to the desktop app, so just about everything I access in the mobile app was previously set up in the desktop app.

On the web app Favorites is found under the Tools feature and on the Mobile app (IOS) it is found in the menu that you tap at the bottom righs and it is towards the top of the list in that menu..

You cannot access passage lists and most other things through favorites in the Mobile app or the Web app. It is quite limited in what it will let you access in the Favourites tool.

I tested the mobile app (iPhone) and I can access the passage lists I previously added to Favorites, and I can also add a passage list to Favorites (it went into a Mobile Favorites folder; I don't know if this is a generic folder or if I created it myself at some point). However, I can't seem to move things in and out of folders, like I would with the desktop app.

@Yasmin Stephen I have created the folder on web app, then I added the passage list in favorites on mobile, then on web app I can move it to the correct folder.
