Why does Logos support Android latest 5 updates but IOS on the latest 2. Is Android the better option to use logos for to get max time before replacing the device.
I cannot speak to the logic that logos uses. But it is common knowledge that Apple supports their hardware far longer than android devices. iOS updates will continue to be given to you free as long as Apple determines that your hardware can still support it.
In 2023 I finally had to replace my first iPhone, a 6s plus, which came out in 2015. I could have kept using it just with the older version of iOS. But that was an eight year run of free iOS updates for someone who had bought the phone new
Cheaper manufacturers of android devices do not support their devices like that. Some of them you won’t get any major version updates at all.
a few years back the more expensive manufacturers of android devices started supporting their hardware longer with android updates. Samsung in particular is giving you guarantees of updates for either so many versions or so much time.
But honestly, Apple has such a superior product that I would still go that direction even if the support with updates was the same. I used android for many years and then I switched to iOS because there was one app that I wanted to run that was not available for android. After a bit of a learning curve, I realized that the apple product and iOS really was superior.
another thing that you might consider is planning on getting a new device every two years.
I buy my phones unlocked and use only prepaid service plans. I have found that the trade-in value on a two or three year old iPhone is substantial enough that it really offsets the cost of a new one. So I in trade in directly to Apple and I do not buy the latest model of iPhone. I buy the prior which is considerably cheaper.
if you had a strategy like this, then staying up-to-date would not be as big of a concern
IMHO … tablet usage is generally linked to mobile phone usage. So if you use an Apple iPhone, you'll more than likely use an iPad. And since iPhone has a 50+% market share for the last 12 months in the USA (though worldwide this year it is neck and neck - Apple 25% and Samsung @ 23%), does that make the iPad the best tablet?
As a software developer, I will say that it is "easier" to code for a consistent platform (Apple) as opposed to the Android platform(Google, Samsung, One Plus, Xiaomi, Huawei, etc). which has many formats, keyboards, screen sizes, etc. Apple has not really made any sizable iPadOS updates in the last few years - a criticism of the iPad community - but something they are about to change with the release of iPadOS 26! So I would expect more frequent Logos i(Pad)OS releases in the short term to handle unforeseen iPadOS 26 nuances.
I am one of "those guys" that has many devices, so I have an iPad Pro and a Samsung Galaxy Tab S10+ … among other devices. I'd say that the iPadOS and Android versions of Logos are about 89% the same. Each have their own quirks. I have to restart the iPadOS every couple days or so as I see a 3 - 4 second lag in highlighting; and the Android app doesn't like the floating keyboard in notes. And as to long supported tablets, Samsung (and now Google) has promised for a while now that they will give 7 years of version upgrades and security updates to their phones and tablets.
I guess what I am saying is that there is greater parity between Apple and Android now more than ever. 3 years ago, I could not say that as the Android app was not as good as the iPadOS app. Maybe this is why you think Logos has been spending more time supporting Android as they have catching it up to match the iPadOS app?
One thing I love about the Android app is that the "Church Presentations" features works! My church uses Proclaim for its presentation software. I get slide notifications at the bottom of my Logos app that shows the bible reference for the slide currently being displayed. While the iPad has that feature on the menu - it doesn't work!
As for cheaper tablets (<$400), I would agree that Apple gives better support. Both the 10th gen and 11th gen iPads are awesome devices! I believe that once we hit the mid-range and higher tablets, support becomes more equal.
Regardless of platform - Logos offers great software support! Keep it up Logos!!!!!!
@Darren Swartzendruber thank you for the reply. What I actualy mean is not the amount of support that Logos have spent on catching Android up to par with iPadOS, but what I mean is lets say my iPad can't take IPad0s26, Logos say they typically support the last 2 OS version. So the way I understand it is, if I can't Update OS26, I will only only be able to get Logos updates for another year. But with Android they support the last 5 OS versions. So it looks like Logos will be able to receive updates for longer on Android if you still can't update to the latest OS. Please correct me if I am misunderstanding it.
Can you please update me on the iPadOS26. I have downloaded the beta and I don't really find that big a difference, but again I am not seeing it from programer perspective, so if you could be so kind as to explain what will make OS26 better that you would expect more Logos Update for iPadOS.
@Lukas I don't know that Logos only supports 2 years of i[Pad]OS updates, but support 5 years of Android updates.
iPadOS 26 finally offers a better windowing system. Currently, iPadOS supports Split View with Slide Over, and on the M-series iPads, Stage Manager. Starting with iPadOS 26, a "true" windowing system will be supported - including the basic iPads!
I'm sure that this will require same development work on Logos side to support.
@Darren Swartzendruber I don't understand how a windowing system will help Logos to make the iPad version more to be closer to the desktop version. As the OS are totally different, and I don't know if they will ever be able to make a mobile version that is as the desktop version. I also don't understand why iPad should have an M3 chip if it can't do what a Mac can do.
Let's do the math… Typical OS release cycles for both iOS and Android are annual. So it's easy to add up support lifespans.
The major Android device manufacturers (Samsung, Sony, HTC, Xiaomi, Motorola, Huawei) provide two major OS updates, i.e. there are three years of manufacturer support, including the first year after initial release. Five years later, Logos support will end. That makes 8 years of Logos support for your average Android device.
Kindle Fire tablets usually lag one or two years behind, so they receive 6 or 7 years of Logos support.
I'm not an Apple guy, but according to Google, Apple supports iPhones with 5 years of OS updates and 7 years of security patches. Only OS updates are relevant for Logos compatibility, so there are 6 years of manufacturer support; two years later, Logos support will end. That makes 7 years of Logos support on your iPhone/iPad in total.
Not sure wether the 8 years of OS updates for the iPhone 6s were an exception… That device would have had 9 years of Logos support in total - which is only one year longer than the major Android devices, at a much higher cost for the device.
The definitive winner is the Google Pixel though. Google provides 7 major Android OS updates to their devices, adding up to 8 years of manufacturer support. Add those 5 years of Logos support, and you come out at a whopping 13 years.
Depending on the end of life of Windows 11, a Microsoft Surface device might (or might not) provide a similar life span of Logos support.
However, since Pixel and Surface devices cost way more than double the price of a mid range Samsung Galaxy or other mid range Android devices, they're no option for me.

Just a couple of thoughts that came to mind …
Apple does not limit support to a number of years or a number of updates. They determine if your hardware can support the update. Data on the internet is compiled and averaged from past devices. No guarantees, but I am thinking the M1 and higher systems will receive even longer support. The OS will be catching up to the new hardware capabilities for some time to come.
As far as "much higher cost", I got my iPhone 6s Plus brand new, but marked down to $350 at a Best Buy store because it was a Verizon branded (and locked) phone which was already obsolete and only had 32GB of memory. I think iPhone 8 had just come out. This was maybe the best investment in tech I have ever made, even though before this I had always purchased cheap android phones. I had used Motorola , Samsung and a couple others. I could still be using it today, but it lacked 5G capability so could not be newly activated on most cell networks.
The Google Pixel is not better than an iPhone in any way that matters to me. The main improvements in the top of the line devices each year is in the cameras and software . My current iPhone (15 Pro max) has the best camera on it of any phone I have ever owned. If you want the quality of an iPhone, you can get it in a top of the line Android device. But the cost is about the same when comparing similar levels of quality.
And then there is the issue of privacy. Do you really trust Google with your privacy? Is Apple more trustworthy? Matter of opinion of course, some people do not trust either company. I personally would trust Apple a million times over Google. Even if the Apple product costed more (it doesn't if you buy smart) …. isn't privacy worth something?

Yesterday I took my laptop to the kitchen table to do some work and was not connected. I was surprised to see that Lemma in Passage did not work offline. Is the number of features that require being online increasing and is the plan to keep increasing those?
I would like to refer Logos to a Russian Speaking friend - wondering if it is available is this language?
