Complex search using cross references.

I want to find all the NT passages that contain cross references to a particular set of two or more OT passages. For instance, I want to find all the places in the NT that reference BOTH Psalm 110:1 and Psalm 8:6. The references can be in the same verse or in the near context (paragraph, chapter, the range is variable). I have tried "Bible:"Psalm 110:1" AND Bible:"Psalm 8:6"" but that only returns 1 Corinthians 15:25. Ideally, the correct search would also include Matthew 22:44, Ephesians 1:19-23, 1 Corinthians 15:23-27, and 1 Peter 3:21-12. Can you help? Thank you!

This type of search will only work if the text you are using for the search is tagged with those cross-references.

Are you seeing those passages cross-referenced to the Psalms you mention in the translation you are using (or anywhere else)?

For instance - in Matt 22:44 the ESV has a cross-reference to Psalm 110:1 but not 8:6

Hi Graham, Thank you. I understand your answer, and I understand why this will not work (i.e. not all of the passages have the cross-refs already attached to them).

Is there a way to achieve the result I am looking for by using a different type of search? Perhaps searching on key words/phrases and their synonyms? In this case, I would want to look for any passage (of variable length) that contains at least one or two word/phrase(s) each from two or more sets of words and phrases. In this case, the set for Psalm 110:1 might contain "sit", right", "right hand", "until", "enemies", "footstool", whereas the set for Psalm 8:6 might contain "all things", "put under", "under his feet".

I would also like to know if there is a way to search for passages containing synonyms to the words or phrases in the sets, like "trample" for "under his feet", etc.

If this is unrealistic, please let me know what you consider my best approach to getting the results I am looking for.

You could do this type of thing (separating the terms in each set with an OR operator and combining them with an AND operator)

But I'm still not really sure what you are seeking to achieve. These aren't actually finding cross-references, simply where the same words appear - is that sufficient for what you are trying to do?

I think I found a search that you can use:

Do a Bible search with your favorite translation and be sure to select the Bible reference below the search bar:

After you have run your search, select the Aligned button to find all of the verses which have cross references to your specific verse that you searched for.

You could also try this search to find either Psalm 110:1 or Psalm 8:6 in the same search:

Put brackets around your search and look for verses that have both of your passages in the cross references:

Or link a CitedBy panel to your favorite Bible, pointing to your favorite cross-ref source (eg Legacy, etc).

As @Graham Criddle has intimated, results are subjective depending on the source. I could only get a result for one Psalm (Ps 110:1) in 1 Pe 3:22 from 6 bibles.

An alternative source is NTSK:

The results are given per bible chapter (=article) for the above resource. In Acts, they were Acts 2:30-35. Results that span multiple chapters are not available in Logos.

A Bible search like Bible:"Psalm 110:1" OR Bible:"Psalm 8:6" (by Verse, Aligned) will provide results you can manually collate:

The yellow results are for Ps 110:1 and blue results for Ps 8:6. Other colors are used if you have 3 or more bible terms. The NABRE has a more interesting spread of results.

An independent set of results is provided by intertext:source:"Ps 110:1" OR intertext:source:"Ps 8:6" (just replace the above query with this one). Results are the same for any bible.

Note that you confine results to the New Testament (or NT range) for all queries.
