Josephus and Jesus: New Evidence for the One Called Christ

T. C. Schmidt has bravely added to the bibliography on the so-called Testimonium Flavianum in Josephus, with a new book through Oxford University Press, titled: “Josephus & Jesus: New Evidence for the One Called Christ.” The author makes the case that this much-discussed passage is “substantially authentic.” In doing so he responds to recent scholarship on the subject, some of which has been unduly sceptical.

Having gone thru the pdf, the argument is thin, especially using vocabulary on limited samples, and a couple mss's.

But would be a good Logos addition, to review the data.

As I understand it, the argument isn't thin. He searched the entire Josephus corpus digitally. Something that couldn't be done by earlier Josephus scholars to prove some established wrong assumptions, e.g. that the vocabulary and grammar is really that of Josephus (which was disputed). And also the Hapax legomenoi that appear frequently in the works of Josephus. Also he has a very strong case against the claim it is too positive about Jesus and shows the words are clearly critical and not affirming the claim of Jesus's messiahship

Vocabulary is one of the poorest metrics, absent a large sample. And the Josephus quotes are quite limited. Even syntactical patterns need access to intent, subject, etc., again not possible.

One is left with mss's and external quoting.

That may be, but you really don't have much other options to argue this. And also all this was used by scholars to argue against the authenticity of the quotes.
