Question

I am an old man in my 90s and a Newbie to the Forum. I am a registered owner of  Logos 8.17 (Desktop Mac Version) on an older iMac (MacOS 11.7.10 which cannot be upgraded) but have not used it in a long time. I have been using a Bible web site but find it insufficient for my needs so I want to return to using Logos. Because of the compromising of one of my credit cards, recent suspicious activity and the age of the iMac (2014 model) I plan to replace the iMac. I have no interest in a subscription model of Logos.

Question:  Would some kind person please tell me the most recent version of MacOS with which the desktop version of Logos 8.17 is compatible? The link to Logos 8 leads me back to the community, thus my query here.

Question: Is it even possible to download/re-download a registered copy of Logos 8.17 to a more recent compatible version of MacOS? If I can determine the latest version of MacOS with which Logos 8.17 is compatible I assume I could restore the desktop version from a backup which I have available.

In the will of the Lord I will soon be moving to an assisted living facility where I will not have internet service in my unit. Considering the monthly cost of the unit I don't feel I can afford the extra cost of fiber optic connection that services the facility. I have successfully run Logos 8.17 off-line on my current system. It is my understanding that many of the resources (Library is very extensive) included with Logos 8.17 are not available off-line. My purchases  amount to only a handful of books. I have tried the "help" menu without success. I freely admit that my age is a hindrance.

Question: Where can I locate a list of the resources in Logos 8.17, in addition to those I have purchased, that are available without internet service?

Until a few years ago it was possible to install older versions of Logos.

It is no longer possible. You can't install logos 8 on a new PC. You'll have to install the new Logos Desktop App, and it will include the features you paid for in version 8, for free. No need for a subscription (though they'll continue to ask you a thousand times to upgrade with a subscription, you don't have to subscribe. The app will work fine without the subscription because you purchased a permanent licence for version 8 before).

Some years ago Logos changed their license numbering scheme - it is no longer tied to "package numbers" such as Logos 8 but the software version number is now independent of features / functionality we have licences for. The current version number is Logos 46.0 (and we expect 47.0 to ship next week - new versions ship on a six-weekly schedule).

My main reason for explaining the above is to suggest you don't look at finding whether you can run an old version of Logos on a particular version of MacOS but, when you get your new iMac, you install the most recent version of Logos on it at the time.

You will be able to log into that using the same credentials as you used in Logos 8 and all the resources you had on that platform, and any features you have purchased, will download / be available on that platform.

There is no requirement for you to purchase a subcription if you don't wish to do so.

Actually all of your resources should be available off-line, some features do require an Internet connection.

I know this doesn't answer the specific questions you were asking but I suggest it is the best way forward.

Adding to the above advice:

* I'm getting 'up there'.  I use my Logos almost totally offline (I do go online if I want a free book, etc!).  But operating offline works fine.  I use a Mac laptop, almost totally for Bible study.  And selecting 'Help' initially wants 'online' but there's a choice to use the offline  'Help'.
* Plus, the software is pretty well designed, so that without updates (if you stay off line), it's pretty solid.  I go for years, offline sometimes.

Hi Don. If it were not for security concerns, would you still be happy using your old computer?

The reason I ask is because you said that you will not have internet where you are going. The most secure computer is always the one not connected to the internet.

Even if the old Mac is taken over with malware etc, It should be possible to completely wipe the drive and do a fresh reinstall to the most recent version of MacOS that it can handle.

Unless you have other reasons for wanting to upgrade the computer? A new computer has many other benefits, so maybe it is your plan anyway. If you get a new computer, the newest version of Logos should install fine, and you can then download all of your resources to use offline.

If sticking with the old computer was your plan, Logos has a page with links to older versions, but it is a bit confusing. But it should be possible to install an older version of Logos if that is what you would like to do.
