I keep running out of hard drive space. Is there a hack for that?

I'm on windows 11 and logos pro. I keep running out of hard drive space which stops logos from downloading new material. I'd like to avoid moving everything over to a new computer with a bigger hard drive. Is there a way to avoid that? Perhaps add an external hard drive or keep some things in a cloud somewhere? Thanks in advance.

There are several ways to free up space on a hard drive, like:

Clean up your drive and remove unnecessary files with the built-in "Disk Cleanup" tool. Choose to also clean up System files, only be aware that this might reduce the option of downgrading to an earlier version of your Windows system (which most people never do anyway). The size occupied by system update files, crash dumps, Internet cache files and others might be huge
- Be aware that deleting Internet cache files also deletes cookies which might require you to do things like registering your name, address etc., but weighed up against the benefits of cleaning up (and possibly increasing your privacy and security by removing unwanted cookies) it is, in my opinion, worth the job :-)
Manually clean up files, applications and email:
- Applications (included apps delivered with your system that you never use) takes up space, some very much space! Run the Add/Remove programs and delete apps you are sure you don't need. Of course, be sure not to remove things you are not certain of what they are :-)
- Videos takes a lot of space. Some, like myself, have sometimes downloaded complete movies, music etc. to use when offline (in a flight). May be not needed locally any longer
- Photos typically exist on hard drives with huge numbers that are duplicates and, if you're like me, thousands of useless photos as well as duplicates takes up space
- Files might be uploaded to a cloud service like OneDrive, which has the option to also cache files locally to be available when offline (only be aware that synchronized files takes up space)
- Email requires regularly clean up activities to not grow into enormous mountains, especially emails with attachments. Sort emails by size to find the biggest ones and handle these first. Remember also the Sent folder which might be big if you yourself send emails with attachments
- When files and emails are deleted they are moved to "Recycle bin" (files) or "Deleted items" (emails). To free up the space right click on these containers and choose to empty them
Compress hard drive:
- From File Explorer right click the drive (normally given a name with (C:) (Ex: Windows-SSD (C:))
- Click the radio box "Compress this drive to save disk", and then Apply og OK
Compress files:
- Files might be compressed with zipping them. Right click on files or folders and choose "Compress to.." and choose zip (or another format you might prefer)

Torfinn gave some pointers on cleaning up stuff on the C:\ drive (don't know if I'd personally go with the compressing the disk or compressing individual files recommendation). It's of course depending on what actually fills your drive how successful that is.

You probably can move pictures and such stuff to an external drive.

If all these fail to provide enough space, there is the possibility to run Logos from an external SSD drive connected to USB (this may even make Logos run faster in case your internal drive is still a spinning HDD). Be advised that while this works - and many users including myslf have used this for years without issue - this is not an officially supported way of running the desktop app. You'd attach the external SSD to your machine on a fast USB port, then make sure the SSD is formatted as NTFS (many come preformatted as ExFAT). Perform a regular install with the custom drive location of the SSD. When everything works, you can de-install the existing Logos instance on the internal drive.

At the time I had this problem I bought a 4 TB SSD drive at a very good price and copied my harddrive to the new one (there are cheap devices to do this with a single press of a button) and put it in my laptop.

If you want to do this now, there may be some caveats:
- This year the prices of hard drives will likely go through the roof (as well as RAM, likely because of ai datacenters). You probably won't get a cheap one. Not to mention a whole new computer.
- Also current laptops don't have the possibility to easily swap the hard drive because they are built so small and flat.

Yep, media (photos, audiobooks, music, videos) is a hog of your hard drive space. I keep almost all of these off my internal drive.
