Didache Commentary

Hi,

I have a copy of The Didache already but would like to have a book that offers commentary for it as well. The only Logos resource that I could find is:

Niederwimmer, Kurt Attridge, Harold W., ed.
The Didache: A Commentary
Translated by Linda M. Maloney

The problem is that this book is only part of a collection (Hermenia) that costs $1200. A bit expensive in order to get just one book Stick out tongue

Am I missing any or is this all that Logos has to offer?

Commentaries on the Didache are few and far between in general -- unfortunately.

This is the only one in Logos that I'm aware of. A book's status in a collection often has more to do with the licensing requirements of the publisher than it does with Logos. I don't know if that's the case here, but I'm going to venture a guess that it is.

I think I remember someone requesting the Milavec translation and commentary recently. Logos already has a relationship with its publisher.

It'll probably be a long time before we see any of them in Logos, but in the meantime if you're really eager to study it, perhaps you could get hold of something from that list in print form through a library or on the used book market.

Yes, Platinum has both the Greek text and the English translation.

Hi Rick: Volume 2 of the "Library of Christian Worship" (Twenty Centuries of Christian Worship) offers a Commentary on the how the Didache 9-10, 14 would have been used (Pages 145-148, Section 161) http://www.logos.com/ebooks/details/lbwrshp2 (book file name lbwrshp2.lbxlls ). This is available as a single volume but a better value re the whole 8 volume set http://www.logos.com/products/details/2228

For a full commentary on the Didache, then the Hermeneia volume would be needed.

Another option for a Didache Commentary (not in Logos) is:

Will Varner, The Way of the Didache: The First Christian Handbook. University Press of America: Lanham, MD. 2007.

Less a commentary proper and more a book about the Didache and its content. Includes Greek text, a new (block-outlined) translation. Chapters are:

Introduction to the Didache
The Rediscovery of the Didache
The Text of the Didache
A Translation of the Didache
The Scriptures of the Didache
The Two Ways of the Didache
The Sacraments of the Didache
The Ministers of the Didache
The Theology of the Didache
The Lessons of the Didache

The book is short (150pp.) You can get it at Amazon.com for around $30 (at time of this writing)

Also note (another print version, not in Logos) Hendrickson has a new release slated for November 2010:

Thomas O'Laughlin, The Didache: A Window on the Earliest Christians. Hendrickson: Peabody, MA. 2010. 208pp.

The page at Hendrickson (http://www.hendrickson.com/html/product/565560.trade.html) has more info. This appears to be more like Varner's book (mentioned above) and less like a formal commentary. But it does contain a translation and commentary of the Didache.
