Mark, if you dilute the pool, then I feel that I certainly do. I feel a relative newcomer to the forums, but (hey) I enjoy them - and I learn far more than I pass on.

Since it was Made in the USA, I assumed it was just a deputy sheriff's badge, like in the good old days of The Lone Ranger, the Range Rider, and the Cisco Kid, when the world was black and white, and televisions were elegant items of furniture in french-polished mahogany boxes.

Actually, I will probably be less likely to accidentally irritate someone or take the bait (if someone else starts something) or give a bogus or rambling answer if I'm well rested. So I think the forums will be just fine.

Perhaps the brown background is to keep our feet on the ground, whereas the blue background might make things go to our heads! [;)]

Having a different color is probably important to keep newcomers from confusing MVPs with Logos employees. (It already happens, but making the color the same would make it worse.)

I propose that when an MVP reaches 10,000 posts he gets a blue star. At 25,000 a silver star. Finally at 50,000 a gold star. That will give you something to look forward to, Rosie.

But actually MVPs are promoted based on quality of their posts, not quantity. And besides, I like blue and wouldn't want to lose it, so I'd stop posting at about 24,500, saving a few for real emergencies when I need to post to get help. [:)]

I don't know. Around my stomping grounds the cross or fish symbol are sometimes just used as a hook to garner unmerited confidence in a snakeoil salesman. The general public's response to it is "RUN!"

Now Joe has that there magnifying glass under his name. It could be he is scrutinizing our posts but with the cross it more likely has some connection with Bible study. Come to think of it, Joe has been an especially sweet and helpful fellow ever since he switched to blue. [Y]

The Portfolio Star is actually leather-embossed...unfortunately, you have to have a multi-touch enabled version of Logos to fully appreciate it's luxurious texture... [:)]

To get serious for a moment.

The problem with posts on forums is that the non-textual stuff in communication (the illocutionary force) gets lost.

Punctuation and smileys go some way to retrieving it, but there is still a lot gets lost.

This is exacerbated sometimes by differences in idiom and culture from one part of the English-speaking world to the next.

It's what one visiting American teacher in Scotland called "the barrier of a common language".

That's why I try to filter every post, which seems unusual in tone to my Scottish ears, through a mesh of questions:

Is this post being humorous?

Is it tongue-in-cheek?

Is this post from somewhere in the English-speaking world where language is often more polemical (in-your-face) than in my culture?

As someone who has never been beyond the shores of these small North-western European islands (British Isles) and hardly beyond the boundaries of his homeland (Scotland), I love the international flavour of the Logos forums, as a microcosm of the universal church of Jesus Christ.

Agreed, I know that interaction on this forum has challenged many stereo types that I have over different flavored Christians, too often we lock the interpret the Gospel ONLY through the our cultural eyeglasses.
