searching in primary sources

I am trying to find a quote from a secondary source in the primary one. In this case, an author quoted Tertullian. I want to see this in Tertullian.

I am aware that a lot of ancient works have multiple translations, so individual words may not be the same.

So I am trying short phrases to help me find the original.

I tried "if you look"

I am getting "thou thyself lookest" "look on" and a lot of results that look like the phrase I am looking for may be in one of the hits but further down out of sight.

how should I do a search like this?

I always use NEAR and two key words in your situation.

I used author:tertullian in a Books Search for "if you look" and got results in ANF3 (Ante-Nicene Fathers Vol 3).

If you do not have any books by the author you can try Study Assistant. It provided ANF3 and another article in response to In which books or articles did Tertullian write "if you look" (in "All Books"). But I'm not certain how complete it is as I got Tertullian and Minucius Felix, Apologetical Works and Octavius in response to a variation of the query.

I found it quickly using BEFORE. I tried NEAR first. Maybe the wrong words.

I found the quote with a NEAR search.

I did the "if you look" search but I couldn't find it with that.

The original source says "if one looks"

That's in my ANF 3

Weird! You'd think they'd have some way to prioritize the person who was active in the thread first before bringing in others. Thanks for that information though—I'll file it away in the back of the ol' brain and hopefully it will help Logos correct the problem in the future!

That's because DMB sorts alphabetically before DMB.

Actually, when I click on the DMB you addressed, it points to me. Sort of a chamelion!
