Quiet today on the forums...
Time for a bit of fun for us soccer fans!
Best team so far? Who's going to win it all? Has anyone found a way to use Logos 4 to exegete the World Cup and predict who will win?
I doubt it will be Australia, unfortunately. I did research this prediction:
France and Germany, two; Italy, one; Australia, one; and Spain, one.Jones, G. C. (1986). 1000 illustrations for preaching and teaching (369).[:)]
Who's going to win it all?
How about USA? [:D][:D][:D]
I'd have to agree with you Dave that the socceroos' hope are pretty slim as are those of the US (their tie against England was generous). As for France, I wished, but let's be realistic, their chemistry is well...
Anyway, so far the team I'm the most impressed with is actually Italy. In spite of the generous tie for Paraguay (a team that was not ridiculous at all) I was impressed by the engagement and the technical prowess of the Italians. I know Germany had a good result but it was against a weaker opponent.
BRAZIL all the way. They will play a plodding, unexciting game but prevail in the end. SPAIN a close second, but they'll run out of steam before the end.
I'm undecided - need to see Brazil and Spain to see how they compare but the first round matches so far have been cautious/unconvincing.
I am not much of a sports fan. Certainly not a FIFA fan.
But I am going with the Ivory Coast team.[H]
The Ivorians were better than Portugal in their first game, but if they don't put more application in the finish, it won't help them much. Good action development in the middle, but too much waste in the last pass.
But I am going with the Ivory Coast team.
That's a reasonable pick at this stage as they looked to have something in reserve against Ronaldo and company (Portugal). But Brazil looms!
England's my team... because Canada has a knack for not getting there! [;)] Sigh.
I'm also into the underdogs, especially the African teams, who have certainly played well so far, no matter what happens.
I think that the divide has definitely shrunk over the years... soccer levels in the smaller markets have really improved.
Except in Canada! apparently. [;)]
I still can't believe Ronaldo got a yellow card yesterday... and for once, he had actually been FOULED! [:D]
the socceroos' hope are pretty slim as are those of the US
. . . don't put those two on the same level. Australia were robbed 4 years ago by Italy (how they ever won the WC, idk), but this year they are pitiful. The US are not pitiful (they were 4 years ago).
Spain has the best and most exciting team, to be sure, but they always choke in the WC, and this year will be no different. (hope that doesn't come back to bite me!).
Brazil has the strength and self belief to win it all, even if they are not playing joga bonita.
For my money, it is Germany. Until the game against Australia, they seemed to be flying under the radar. "Ballack is hurt" everybody said. NOW people are saying "Ballack WHO?" I agree, Francis, the Socceroos are weak and old (and not wise for their years, either), but Germany looked very creative, precise, strong, and are young and brash enough to not know they are not supposed to win.
US make it to quarter finals.
For my money, it is Germany.
What about Italy? I am surprised that commentators and most people are not more impressed with their opening game. Sure, it was a tie with not as many goals as Germany, but Germany played a much weaker opponent defensively than Paraguay. Paraguay I found to be unintimidated and solid for the best part of the game. But what really impressed me from Italy was the energy they put into the game. They wanted it. They really hustled. Technically, I found them very solid as well. I am curious to see how both Germany and Italy will develop in their next game.

Looks like Spain already ran out of steam. Brazil are looking good!
Yeah - that was a bit a surprise wasn't it?! Of course, where they go from here is still up for grabs - perhaps that loss will sharpen then up. Perhaps that late goal against Brazil will wake them up too - good job it wasn't 1-0 at the time.

Cheer up, it will soon be time for some smash-mouth football.
Should all this not be built into some sort of extension for the Prayer List? [:$]
However it should be limited to Competitions with 'World' in the title and where more than three countries are represented.

Makes one think: What does God do when each team prays for the win?
(I have seen a tiny portion of one game so far. I "missed" most of it as I was mucking around with Logos4 and stuff here on the forums)
So has anyone decided to use the World Cup for an outreach opportunity? I have been tossing it out with some of our big FIFA fans and we may look at trying to set something up for the Final...
'I don't know if that is a safe idea Frank. Religious fervor can get pretty heated sometimes. The CrusadesThe Spanish InquisitionCalvin/ArminiusCatholic/ProtestantKJV/?FIFA ...............
Could you handle the subsequent riot?
For my money, it is Germany. What about Italy?
What about Italy?
you can never count them out, too be sure. But i think they are too old to get through the whole tournament. Still mystifies me how they won 06 (besides a gift against Australia to move on) [;)] To be honest, I didn't get to see their opening game. But there are a million US fans who are just slightly smug that Rossi didn't make the Azzurri for the WC . . . [6].
My resources may not be complete, but this is what I get in a search for "World Cup" in Logos4.
If I search in Spanish "Copa Mundial", I get 4 more hits!
...but it won't tell me which team will win in 2010...[^o)]
... a blow for Germany! They will still qualify but perhaps a dampener on those who got over-excited after the first game.
Argentina? Good game but shaky in D. One also wonders how they would do against a more solidly organized team than South Korea was.
France... yuck!
USA tied Slovinia in 2nd half after scoring 2 goals. Interesting.
Tomorrow we'll see what the Dutch team will do with the Japanese...
Good luck, mazel tov, etc. [:)]
When I was in Grand Rapids I would see a number of trucks from the Holland Motor Express with a picture of a Dutchman on the side with foot extended (wearing klompen). The motto was "You just can't beat the Big Dutch Fleet." Due to perspective the foot was exceedingly large so I changed it to "You just can't beat the Big Dutch Feet." So, good luck to the big Dutch feet. I don't know why I say that since I can't stand soccer ever since I played it for one week in physical education and almost got killed though I played football on both sides of the ball in every game and never got a scratch. Don't take my remark as disparaging the Dutch. They're good people.

Just what is happening? England can't get a win when it should (and may not qualify), Germany look hapless. Spain, France, Italy ...
England just seem to under perform in all world cups. This year's effort is really surprising me. I expected more of them. Group C is still pretty wide open. Even Algeria could advance!
Germany were not bad. But being a man down made it that much harder. And that ref was atrocious. Germany will still advance. And I think they could still win it. I have had my eye on them and the Dutch. And as always, I root for the Yanks!
If we get March Madness, where is our World Cup Insanity discount program?
I was wondering that too.
If you like soccer then you're already mad so there is no discount.

the success of the Seattle Sounders MLS team not-with-standing, soccer has apparently not made it as far as Bellingham . . .
Come on ... it's the only professional sports event I've attended voluntarily. The others were all take-a-foster-son events. Oops, I may not be a counter-example.
I saw one upset fan on the TV News saying something like:
"We've all spent thousands of Pounds to be here ... @#$%# ... Team ... %###$ ... waste of money ... %$$$#$! useless ..." and it went on like that for a while.
I was thinking how nice it was to be able to enjoy watching sports at times, yet not really care about the outcomes.
Wonders if Athletes In Action has come up with a full blown theology of sport (sporteology)? Perhaps the Word Cup gives expression to the mandate to rule over the earth?
Word Cup eh? I wonder....
The Complete Book of Everyday Christianity (Robert Banks and R. Paul Stevens) has a whole article on (the theology and spirituality of) sports (pp. 953-961). Unfortunately it's not available in Logos format, but you can read almost the entire article (minus one page) on the preview at said site which I linked to if you search for sports and start with the hit at p. 953.
I like that! Of course, then I have to start messing with it: Logos Cup, World Logos Cup, Logos World Cup
Looking compromised though still possible for the Ivory Coast. Numerous commentaries are available on the French team situation (though not in Logos of course). The consensus interpretation held by most scholars is that unable to produce entertainment on the pitch, they decided to produce off the field.
Props to all the UK and USA fans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a heart stopper for the US!
As an England fan, congratulations to the USA for making it to the last 16 (despite having another goal unjustly disallowed!)...

i give a hearty congratulations to England for not imploding as Les Bleus did. And as we speak, Australia are very nearly qualified . . . unbelievable!
I fear you have spoken to soon... It is now 2-1... [:'(]
The Australians can, perhaps, console themselves that although they may be going home, they will not be travelling second class (as per France...[;)])...

I am not sure who is "worse" to meet with at this point: Ghana or Germany. I think I still am glad we (US) are playing Ghana. And this sets up a good couple of matches: the historic England v. Germany rivalry, and some unfinished business the US have with Ghana, leftover from '06. [:D][B]
England vs. Germany.... I have an ominous feeling...
Both should be good matches and I hope we meet each other again later in the competition... Perhaps and England vs. USA final (not likely, I know)!
I think Ghana will give you a really good match... Muntari is a good player...
Someone want to do some web surfing for me? I want to know the names of the entire field for this World Cup http://jmm.aaa.net.au/articles/17740.htm (be sure to check the link out before answering). I want to nominate them all for Logos ... which brings this thread in line with the forum guidelines. But continue on with the other world cup speculation.[:D]

I did a little searching and didn't find much, other than that write up! But I'd like several of those guys in the Logos line-up, and several of them are! That was a pretty funny write up and idea.
I still think Logos could--should--will (!!!! [;)]) think about a Logos Cup! Maybe they can make a knock out round get up. It starts this weekend, so they have time!

Yup. We gained some respectability but that 4-0 defeat was too much. England (my birth place) qualified but need to be more convincing in front of goal (although other nations have shown similar or worse goal fright!). The South American teams are going to dominate, though.
It's amazing to see how many opportunities to score there are that lead to naught. I wished Ghana had actually won the game against Germany, but the strike was very nice and they are through anyway.
France won the Word Cup [;)]
. . . the War of the Words Cup.
