Not necessarily. A complete reindex is only necessary if the addition equals x% of the original index size. (Don't know what x is, perhaps 25% - just a random guess) Of course that may no longer be an issue since MERGE is back.

More than likely than you'll run a secondary index which you can then merge later by typing "Merge index" in the command bar.

2.0d made some changes to the index, so it requires a full reindexing. Since we're getting a 2+GB update with 2.0d anyway, it's just as well.

Yow, that's a lot. But I'm grateful for it. Melissa's post says that among the things being fixed in this update are metadata and typos. I'm looking forward to seeing if any of the typos I'd reported have been fixed finally! [:)] (Good thing I marked them all with highlighting so I can go find them again; but...will have to wait an hour for the wildcard search for highlighting which is still exceedingly slow.)

It just occurred to me, isn't it odd of them to release a Release Candidate and declare it "gold" all in one fell swoop? Seems to defy the purpose of a release "candidate." I sure hope the fixes they did in this release candidate were so minor as to not be able to cause any regressions. I'm not going to try to compare the release notes to figure out which fixes are new in RC2 from RC1. Maybe they deferred all the bugs from RC1 and just fixed the About Box text, which would mean it's totally safe to declare this the gold release at once.

I try to make laptop fan run slower by setting Logos4Indexer.exe to run only only one processor. Runs at 50% CPU usage instead of 95%. Less CPU, less heat. At least I think it helps.

Task Manager > Processes tab > Select Logos4Indexer.exe > Right-click and select Set Affinity ... > Uncheck a CPU

I still have my update channel set to beta, and I did get the release with it at that setting. All I did was type update now and it started downloading. When you reset the download channel, it will check for updates, so it's possible that simply by changing you got an update check you didn't get before.

I left my channel set to beta for the explicit purpose of checking the chart and the theory behind it and can confirm that for me, at least, the gold release was picked up with the download channel set to beta.

It'll take twice as long to Index but I doubt the heat will be substantially reduced because the remaining core can still be used by other programs! You would be better off using Power Options in Control Panel settings and setting the CPU to about 70% (or set to Medium if you have a third party utility) because that allows the indexer to use both cores, reduce heat more effectively and be a little faster than 1 core only.

I just use household fan and direct it at the laptop!

Just set Automatically Download updates to NO, then load and Sync your new L3 resources, wait a while (? - at least 2 hours) for the L4 server to be updated and then allow the L4 download. You won't be sure the L3 files are included unless you know how much the L4 update will be + the size of the L3 update.

I have approx. 15 apps running, plus surfing w/Firefox, and the other processor only runs at about 5%. Max. load for both never gets above 60% when I'm surfing, so it really doesn't matter if it takes longer. In fact, I'm not convinced it takes twice as long. The fan speed stays at a normal level throughout.

I'm happy to report that I had no major issues. Everything actually worked the way it was supposed to, and while my laptop didid warm up a bit to the touch, it managed to keep it's cool. [:D]

I had to change it to default and restart the program to make the update now work. Update is currently downloading.

However, this is not the full install, only the engine. Logos4.0d requires some additional downloads (about 2GB's). It is not advisable to mismatch a new version engine, with old version resources.

I think it does do a full install, or rather it installs the engine which then checks to see if there are any new resources . If someone has lost their entire Logos installation due to a hard disk crash or something, this is the link we tell them to go to in order to reinstall from scratch. To be safe, one could always do "update resources" after getting the new engine. However I would assume that updating the engine would also force the resource downloads if that new engine requires them (subject to you confirming the download if you have "Automatically Download Updates" set to No, of course).

However, I might be wrong, too. I've been wrong on some of the installation stuff before. I've found all the update channel stuff quite confusing.

Yes that's my understanding too. But the person wanted to download at work rather than at home because of bandwidth issues. This isn't going to solve the entire problem. That's what I was trying to point out. Next time, I'll make my point more clearly.

If L4 has been installed and one wants only the software upgrade then set Automatically Download Updates = NO in Program Settings, close L4 and then run the web link.

OK, I'd missed that part of his post. However, even so, I think if he has a laptop he's bringing in to work to take advantage of the unlimited bandwidth there (which is what it sounds like), if he runs the installer from that link I posted, it will get him the new resources too (albeit as a two-stage process). I don't think he'll end up with a problem scenario where he has the latest engine but old resources that don't work with it, as long as he follows through and accepts the "There are new resources available" prompt. Then after the download completes he can take the computer home and do the indexing at home, as it doesn't require being connected to the Internet.

I should point out, S Slab, that if you're going to attempt to download all the resources over a WiFi connection at work as opposed to directly plugged into the ethernet, it will be a lot slower. So I hope you have access to a direct internet connection in your office.

L4 wanted to update to 4.0d yesterday, fine. Then it wanted to index (both Bible and general index). uggggg.

Now today i receive the 2gig library update and guess what it wants to index again.

wish they had forced the 2gig to download with 4.0d or something. Another night of indexing.

How long does your computer take to index? Mine takes just under 4 hours for around 13GB of resources.

Sounds like a relatively recent computer. I don't know about Steve's computer but many older systems which can run L4 reasonably well once the indexing is complete, really drag with indexing especially with lower RAM and of course CPU limitations. I have run Logos on three systems with varying results.

Intel P4@2.4GHz would take from 24 hours to 30 or so to index my library - note that was during the earliest beta's

AMD x2 64@ 2 GHz would index in 15-20 hours spanning from early beta to 4.0b

Intel i5 which I'm not sure on total index time any more but for my library of some 3000 resources it takes under 10 hours.

If you're indexing in under four hours you must have something of a "screamer" there.
