Question about searching a resource

I own the entire John Piper collection. How do I tell Logos to search these resources when I run a passage guide search?

I believe in the older version I had to set the John Piper resources as a collection, then it would search that collection.

I understand Logos 4 works a bit different. I want to be sure I am checking those resources as I prepare sermons.

Any suggestions?

Hi Rick,

1. Create a collection of all Piper's writings... "author:piper" — you do not use the quotes.

2. Then when you do a basic search, use the drop down list to selection just the Piper books.

To add this to your Passage Guide, you need to create a new customized PG, add a Collections to it for Piper (along with anything else you want to search).

So I'd have to run different searches each time? I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself correctly.

What I want to be able to do is simply put in a passage in the home screen, and pull up all the resources in my library that deal with that topic. (including the Piper books, and any others) Is that doable?

The default Passage Guide is designed to search versified books (commentaries). If you want to search non-versified books for a specific verse reference you need to use the Search window.

Once the window is open, use the Basic search, select your Piper collection or search your entire library. Here is the help page on how to search for a specific Bible reference.

General format is <datatype Op reference> eg. <bible = Jn 3:16>, <LN ~26.5>
Op can be ~ intersection (default), =, subset, or superset
Note many types are handled automatically, so <~Jn 3:16> or Jn 3:16 are the same and <G5547>, <H6213> are recognized as Strong’s numbers.
Louw-Nida ranges can be specified as <LN57.125-57.129> or <LN57.125-129>

No, just search your Entire Library which does include your Piper books.

No, you can add any collections you want, and multiple collection sections do your custom passage guide. The commentaries will still be in there separately (and you can narrow down the commentary search to just your favorite commentary sets too, if you want, by setting up a collection for those).

If you want to simply Search all the resources, do as Joe explained, use the Search panel with Entire Library.

If you want all your resources to show up in a Passage Guide (that would be a pretty hefty and probably not very useful PG, though), you can create a collection that contains your entire library. The easiest rule for that is rating:>0. Then include it in a collections section in your Passage Guide template. More likely you'll want to make a smaller collection of all the resources you'd want Passage Guides to search. It could be all the books by your favorite authors, for example. So to set that up you'd make a rule such as:

author:"John Piper" OR author:"Martin Luther" OR author:"Max Lucado"
