Logos 4.0d will not install

Hello

I've searcehd the forum and the wiki but have'nt come across anybody else with this problem. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

The update for Logos 4.0d was dowloaded automatically and I was prompted to restart Logos in order to install the update. I did this but a dialog told me I had to run Logos "as administrator" by right-clicking the Logos-icon and choosing that option.

I've done that again and again to no avail. After choosing "Run as administrator" I get the usual "User Account Control" dialog asking me whether it's okay to allow Logos to start. This is normal procedure (on my computer, at least). I okay that and then get the following dialog:

I press "yes" (or, rather "Ja" in Swedish).

Then I get the following dialog:

In my understanding this is exactly what I keep doing. I've right-click the logos-icon and choose "Run as administrator. I've tried this over and over but get the same sequence of dialogs. Am I missing something? I just can't see what the problem is and I have not encountered anything like this with the previous updates. I've never downloaded any of the betas. I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate.

Thanks for any suggestions, tips or ideas!

    Hello Andreas,

Does it make any difference to run setup from this link:  http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/Installer/Logos4Setup.exe? Could you enable logging and upload the setup logs to this thread?

    Thanks,
    Melissa

    Hello Melissa

No, running setup from the link you suggested had the same result ending up with:

    image

I've enabled loggin using the suggested script. However, when I'm bumped a log file does not seem to be produced as I never actually enter Logos. I attach the log file that is produced if I choose to NOT have Logos install the update. Then Logos 4.0c starts as usual and I suspect the log file will not show anything strange. I try uploading according to the instructions ion the wiki here below:

    I appreciate your effort!

    Hello again Melissa

When a report is submitted to development, what does that mean? Will they look into the matter and within what approximate timeframe? Will they post a reply on this thread or how will I become aware of a possible solution?

    Kindly

Andreas, this message is designed to be shown only on Windows XP when a user uses the RunAs dialog with the "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity" checkbox checked. It doesn't make sense that it should show up on your Windows 7 machine, especially since you have installed Logos 4 successfully before. It looks like you might also see it if your Documents folder is missing, e.g. C:\Users\andreas\Documents does not exist. Is it possible that something happened to your Documents folder, or that there's something special or strange about it, like you redirected it to a different location or something?

I'm not sure why your setup log file isn't being written to the normal place (the "Logos Log Files" folder in your Documents folder--hmm...)  I suspect that it's being written somewhere, though. Could you search for it, please? Perhaps it could be in your Temp folder (In Windows Explorer, type %temp% into the address bar) or in another user's Documents folder. You should be able to type logos4setup.log in your Start button's Start Search field and see it listed.

If you can't find it, you could try this: even when logging is disabled, Setup-related activities are still logged, only to a different location. You could disable logging (see the Diagnostic Logging page) and try the update again, then look in your TEMP folder as described above.

    Hello Bryan

I sure appreciate your effort and quick reply!

You were right that the folder Logos Log Files were in the temp-folder.

I've now managed to locate some log files. I hope they may be illuminating.

    0564.logos4setup.log  Most recent one.

    7433.logos4setup[1].log  Biggest one.

    0488.logos4setup.log  Oldest one.

    Thanks!

    Hello again

Yes, it might be that any pointers to "my documents"-folder are redirected. Whenever I dock my laptop in church I'm connetcted to our network and "my documents" are saved to a server. However the "My documents"-folder is supposed to sync and mirror itself to the harddrive of my laptop.

This is not a new set up but has been my computers' environment for 1½ years. However, recently there was a glitch with my server-connection and our computer support-people had to set it up again. Maybe they altered some setting that's causing the problem? I did ask them about it before posting my question on the forum but because of the looks of the dialog-boxes that I get they assumed it was a problem with the Logos software.

    Andreas,

Please save the attached file to your hard disk, rename it Logos4Setup.exe then run it. It's a test version that should bypass the problem. I'd like to see the log file that it generates, so if you would find that file and post it back here, I'd appreciate it. It should also update you to 4.1, though if there's something else amiss, the log file should reveal that.

    Thanks,

    Bryan

    Hello again

The new setup file worked wonderfully! Thank you ever so much. I'm now on 4.0d and busy downloading almost 2GB of downloads.

Below are two files attached, the setup.log and a library.installer.log. I hope they will be useful to you.

Thank you very, very much for looking into the problem and solving it in such a short time! Great work!

I can't update to 4.0d either (on Win7 Pro x32), but for a different reason than the OP. I get two error messages:

    1) "Warning 1909. Could not create shortcut...", and then

    2) "Error code 2902".

I tried downloading Logos4Setup.exe witht the same result. I haven't had any problems updating  before now. Also, I couldn't find anything in the forum or online help on these error messages.

Could you find and upload the Logos4Setup.log and DigitalLibraryInstall.log files, please? I'll investigate.

    Thanks,

Any ideas yet, Bryan? When the update failed, it crippled my current install so I can't use Logos at all now.

Sorry Michael, I haven't had the chance to look into it. I'm looking at it now.

    1) "Warning 1909. Could not create shortcut...", and then

This warning was issued by Windows Installer because it tried to write the Logos 4 shortcut to a system folder, and it doesn't have access to that folder. (Logos 4 is a per-user installation rather than a per-machine installation, hence the installer can only write files to locations to which the user has un-elevated write access.)

Normally, Windows Installer would write the shortcut to your C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder, though I'm guessing that for some reason that folder does not exist, and that Windows Installer is falling back on the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder.

    2) "Error code 2902".

Windows Installer issued this error because it's now trying to set an attribute on the file that it didn't actually write. This action only occurs on Windows 7.

The question, then, is why is Windows Installer using the wrong Start Menu folder? Does the C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder exist on your machine? Are you on a domain with roaming profiles enabled? If so, perhaps those settings were changed since the last time you updated Logos 4?

It would be good to understand what went wrong with your Windows configuration. In order to get your Logos 4 running, though, you could just give your user account Full Control of the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder.

    Success!

    1) 1909

That Programs folder exists, but when I first got my computer, I changed the default folder to the All Users one you referenced in #2 above. I am the only one using my computer, and I wanted all the Start Menu shortcuts in the same place.

    2) 2902

I gave my account Full Control of the Start Menu folder as you suggested, and Logos updated perfectly, so all's well. Thanks for the help.

I'm still curious, though, why Logos installed properly the first time (as have all my other programs), even after I changed the default Start Menu folder but before I gave my account full control.

When you got your computer, what mechanism did you use to change the Start Menu folder to the C:\ProgramData\... path?

I'm curious how the shortcut was installed successfully the first time, too...

    Hello again Bryan

I'm sorry to tell you but the exact same problem has returned again as I try to install the service release (SR-1) for 4.0d that was released yesterday. I get the exact same dialogs as before (see screen shots in my posts earlier in this thread).

Should I try using the test version of the logos4setup.exe that you posted before?

    Kind regars!

    Andreas,

Sorry about that; my fix did not make it all the way. I've fixed the fix. Please use the attached Logso4Setup.exe (renaming it as such) and post back how it works.

    Thanks!

    Hello again Bryan

The new setup file worked fine and I'm now on 4.0d SR-1.

I've tried locating the logos4setup.log in order to post it to you but I just can't find it. I've looked in the temp-folder where the logfiles seem to be put but there is nothing new there nor anywhere else.

If you want the log-file, could you advise me how to find it?

In any case - thank you very much for your quick help!!

You're welcome! I'm not sure where the log file would be, though I think I know what it would hold, so I don't need to see it. Thanks, though.
