BUG: Logos 4 resources still pulled from Logos 3 Resources folder!

I wanted to see if this still happens since its been quite a few months since first reported. I have a laptop running L4 and L3. I have a desktop running just L4. So here is what I did:

1. I changed the Resources folder of L3 back to "Resources" (I name it something else so L4 can't find it).

2. I run L4 on the laptop (where L3 is also). I do an "Update Now" and an "Update Resources".

3. I use "Beyond Compare" to compare the Resources on L4, desktop vs. laptop. They are identical. So far so good!

4. Today, I got an update of some resources I bought. I got an email from Logos that they were ready. So I ran L4 on the desktop, did an Update now, and the resources downloaded etc.

5. I ran L4 on the laptop, and right away it said the "Preparing..." message (Stage 1 of 3, etc.). I didn't even get to do an Update Now or anything. That message stayed up for about 5 minutes. Then L4 finally started.

6. I ran Beyond Compare again, and as you can see from the attached report, the laptop and desktop L4 installs were no longer the same with regard to resources. (Note I had not run L3, so it did not have the new resources yet). BUT - the L4 install on my laptop copied ALL these resources from the L3 Resources folder! See the attached file - Basically, it copied 60 files from the L3 folder, which have older dates than the same files on the L4 server. So the desktop has 60 files newer than the old, although it seems they are identical other than date/time.

Files should be the same across L4 installations. Can this be fixed so we can have L3 and L4 running with the correct resources on the same computer? We have no way of verifying that our Resource installations are correct otherwise. I am back to "hiding" my L3 resources folder so this mess doesn't happen...

Can you upload the indexer logs from both machines as that would answer a lot of my questions.

I presume the laptop is the Right side of BC report(?) because I'm puzzled why it preferred an "older" lbxlls file (CVTAudio) to the newer logos4 file on the Left side (desktop). The file dates could be misleading so what are the actual versions?

You don't mention the 700 newer files but i presume the laptop got those from L3?

What files were downloaded to the laptop?

Yes, your "puzzlement" is one for me as well! And it had the L4 (left side) versions of all those files before I started this test!

Right, forgot to mention - the 700 files came from L3 as well. The laptop and desktop L4 installations were IDENTICAL in files before I started this test. And the L3 system was synchronized with the ftp server at Logos which handles L3 files. Any differences noted in the report file were due to files pulled from L3.

Oh darn, the Indexer log file is lost - I synchronized files to get them correct again, and did a Rebuild Index that ran overnight. Problem is, this problem will not show itself until I get another resource that needs to be added to my system. If I just run L4 and do "Update Resources", or "Update Now", nothing happens. It's like it does not go there and look unless it's already in the middle of updating resources from the L4 server.

There really seem to be two problems:

1. L4 should NEVER look at the L3 Resources folder IMHO unless someone specifically does a Scan.

2. And even then, if the files are worthy to be replacing L4 files, then those files should be on the L4 server so ALL L4 installations get them! If they are not worthy to be replacing L4 files on all L4 installations, then they should not "corrupt" L4 installations that coexist with L3 on the same computer!!

I am hoping Logos will try and test this, it seems pretty easy to duplicate now:

1. Get a system with L4 and L3 installed. Ensure all resources are current on both (L4 from the L4 server, L3 in sync with ftp server).

2. Close both L4 and L3

3. Have a new resource(s) available, as if the user purchased a new resource.

4. Run L4 - it will update the new resource, and pull all this stuff from L3.

Simple? Can someone from Logos respond to this, it's been a lot of work and effort so it would be great to hear what Logos thinks too! As always thanks Dave too, for your reply...

I think we have been more than patient, but something is WRONG. Having Logos 3 and 4 on the same computer is REQUIRED right now for many people, yet the WRONG RESOURCES will be pulled into Logos 4 through no fault of the user. Yes I am FRUSTRATED with continuing to have to fight this issue with no answers or support!

All I ask is some acknowledgment of what is going on, and what is the plan. It is RIDICULOUS that I should have to rename my Logos 3 Resources folder when I exit Logos 3 so that if an update comes down my Resources folder in Logos 4 isn't corrupted.

I have documented how it occurs - has this been verified? Is more information needed?

Is it asking too much to get some sort of acknowledgment/communication on this issue? It's been at least SIX MONTHS and normally Logos is so customer friendly in discussing issues so we can deal with them!

The last response from Logos to me stated that files still need to be copied across from L3 and that there would be no option to ignore L3 files. So we continue to have bugs like L4_loads_L3_resources_instead_of_downloading_L4_format as well as ones you note.

Well maybe that would work if the file systems were more consistent with each other. It seems that the L3 files are considered newer for one problem, and in the case you specify it seems Logos 4 is pulling hidden files that it shouldn't?

I don't have a problem with the mechanism per se, although it sure would be nice if Logos explained how and why this works the way it does because all it seems to do is give users of both heartaches. People with one install of Logos 4 and 3 on a single computer won't notice how much this messes up their resources.

It's broken, and we have a mechanism that doesn't seem to help us much - again I wish Logos would come forward and explain this. Maybe nobody there knows how it works and it's just a by-product of two systems that don't really work well together? Very unusual that Logos is so uncommunicative on this for so many months.

Note a few days ago I reported topics.logos.com pulling up some L3 files for me. I'm suspicious that there is a glitch in the new reference link format processing.
