Hymnals

The Scripture index in our hymnal had absolutly nothing for that part of Job (much easier would have been if we were covering Job 19 -- "I know that my redeemer lives..."). So I just went with hymns mentioning suffering, sickness, trials, and temptations, and trusting God in the midst of same.

122 - All glory be to God on high

573 - What a friend we have in Jesus (I accidentally told the pianist the wrong number, the version with the unfamiliar tune; we'll see if she can sight read #574instead)

131 - When in the hour of deepest need

439 - I want Jesus to walk with me

585 - In your sickness

586 - Cast thy burden upon the Lord

580 - My life flows on

Rosie, What hymnal are you using?

I know it has been mentioned in the past, but it would be nice if LOGOS had a hymnal index. There are a number of hymn resources, but a somewhat comprehensive index - keyed to hymnals would be nice. I know there are some on the web, but they are not integrated into LOGOS. Since we use the United Methodist Hymnal, I make regular use of "hymnsite.com"; but there are others.

Rosie, What hymnal are you using?

Hymnal: A Worship Book. It's probably the most commonly used current Mennonite hymnal in North America. Most of those links I provided are to an online replica of it, complete with MIDI files. The rest are to public domain hymns on the Cyber Hymnal (whose URL has changed BTW; the old one, cyberhymnal.org was hijacked by a commercial enterprise that stole all their free content and is now cluttering it all with advertising. Uggh! Google still finds the latter first, so please post links to the new Cyber Hymnal site on any websites you have influence over, to help get their Google ranking back up to #1 with the new address)

The most awesome comprehensive hymnal index on the web is http://www.hymnary.org/. It would be great if Logos could do a deal with them and/or Cyber Hymnal to be able to do full-text searching of hymns from within Logos, and then have all the Biblical references marked in these indexes readily accessible. Or just think: the music section in the Passage Guide could truly show you all the known hymns that reference that passage and give you access to the full text (or at least a link off to the web where you can find it and listen to it). Yes, I know, there are already ways to search by full text or Scripture reference on Cyber Hymnal and hymnary.org, but as you said, it would be nice if there were integrated into Logos.

We're not Mennonite, but my son was in the tri-state Mennonite youth choir for years at Goshen. In between the performance numbers the audience would sing hymns from the hymnal that were printed out and placed in the program. It was interesting to sing some hymns that I have never heard before. Although I always found it to be somewhat disconcerting when the people, from three states, would begin to naturally sing them in parts.

It was interesting to sing some hymns that I have never heard before. Although I always found it to be somewhat disconcerting when the people, from three states, would begin to naturally sing them in parts.

That's the part I love most about singing hymns with Mennonites! I'm not Mennonite either, by background, so pretty much nobody in the church I grew up in sang in parts. But I did teach myself to sing the alto line (low female voice, below soprano). I was taking piano lessons so I knew how to read music. So now I get to sing with a whole church full of people who read music and sing in parts and it's like being in the heavenly choir every Sunday. I love it! Yes, many of the hymns in this hymnal were not familiar to me when I first started attending, but they've got great words and glorious harmonies and have become beloved to me over the years.
