Changing Layouts Seems Kind Of Clunky?

Logos (4.0d SR2) seems a little bit clunky when switching between layouts - meaning, it's rather slow and the screen shrinks for a moment before everything pops into place. It doesn't seem right. My computer specs are more than adequate. So far, I've tried rebuilding the index and turning off the "use internet" feature.

Is there anything more I can do? Is this a known issue?

I've experienced this type of behavior from Logos since the beginning. There have been posts about how jerky Logos is in redrawing the screen during a major change (layout shift/first time startup). I'm sure its a known issue but probably low on the priority list until the missing features get re-integrated.

Saving all of the data for all of your layouts would fill your hard drive real fast – or increase your internet traffic to very high levels – so they need to take a short cut – something like saving the state of the layout – What was open, Where on the screen, what page, what search. Then when asked re do the state

What is involved in switching between layouts?

CLOSE ALL – get rid of what was being done – But keep track - this may be wanted latter

Re-Open all resources that were open – to the correct page

Re do all open searches – advance to the correct page

(What resources were open when the search was done that are not open now)

Display –[ it is going to take a while – just as long as it took the first time]

[That is how I would program the layout function - LOGOS - how did you do it??]

[LOGOS – how many lines of code in restoring a layout??]

Workspaces in L3 opened exactly the way you designed them, and opened instantly. Changing between workspaces was lightning quick.

Layouts in L4 are amazingly more customizable, and have a host of incredibly useful features. I spent some time designing several great layouts. Then I discovered they take an age to load, an age to swap between, and they don't behave themselves properly; there is no such thing as an 'empty' layout, they always appear with all the material which was in them the first time you saved them.

So now I don't bother with them anymore. I just use guides.

I believe there is some more optimization Logos could do to cut down on the time it takes to open a new layout. There was some discussion about this a while ago and I believe Mark Barnes traced one or more issues that were slowing down this process. Some simple caching of information seemed like one way for the program to save a lot of time when changing layouts. I don't think this is a high priority for Logos right now, with missing features still to be added in, but speeding up the change of layouts would be something I'd really like. I don't do it much because it can take 3-5 minutes with the layouts I use.

Rather than switch from one layout to another, I close all and THEN open a new layout. Takes only seconds for me. Hope this is a helpful tip to some.

How complex did you make work spaces in Logos 3? (Just a few books open?)

How complex are your layouts in Logos 4? (Two sorts, 4 books and a word study?)

Try running the same work space / layout in both – don’t remember how they were – test.

Logos 3 Search entire library on love, open two books from different pages of the search and save as a work space. Get the following message when you open the work space “

The search has not been started. Use the Continue Search button to start the search.”

Logos 4 Search entire library on love and save as layout (as above).
Opens open items fine but you can see that it is re doing the search.

Yep... way to clunky to use like i'd like to use them. Granted i have pretty complex layouts with lots of resources open... but shouldn't matter. I'd love to use several different layouts rather than have to cram too much into one... but 3-5mins to load a layout every time is just not practical. Hope this is something they address soon (ya i know... along with 5000 other "soon" requests :-)

Running 4.1 Beta 7 on XP under Parallels on a Mac Pro. My average layout has at least 13 panes/panels/windows open. Switching between layouts took less than 12 seconds, usually around 5-7. Perhaps Logos has done some optimization here, but it is not mentioned in Release Notes.

I'm running 4.0d SR-2 on Win7 Ultimate 64 bit, with a Core i7 920, GTX 295, 12GB RAM, and WD Caviar Black 1TB drive. I've just tried changing layouts for the first time since the latest update (4.04.4.3415), and found to my amazement that they are now changing in 7-10 seconds. This is a welcome improvement.
