I'm not excited at all about the addition of gestures [;)]

General questions/comments/requests:

As I was playing with these occasionally Logos would lock up. Does this happen when Logos is trying to guess what the gesture is? I occasionally had my attempt at a "c" gesture result in a closed resource. Could we have an undo close gesture?
Will there be customizable settings for gestures? I use FireGestures for Firefox and if Logos doesn't make these things customizable I might have to change my browser to match Logos so I don't confuse myself.
Would it be possible to add a colored line so we can see what our gesture is to that point? Here's an example from the aforementioned FireGestures. The blue line shows where my mouse moved while I was holding down the right mouse button. the text at the bottom appears in the lower left portion of my browser so that I can see what the particular gesture is and what it will do (in this case DR is not assigned to anything)

Thanks for this feature, it'll make Logos faster and easier to use!

I like the idea of the symbol and description Kevin. Customization would probably be nice. Did not know that so many products were using gestures.

I like the C for Contents pane but I went too far down one time and it closed the tab (Down-Right). The secret is to draw an O but not close it!

Wow....this is nice...I've never used gestures before...how convienent..!

I did also install "FireGestures" and really like them also...especially the way you can see the line when you gesture it....

And also the way you can do your own gesture....

I like the idea of the gestures, never used them in L3, but I'm getting more to where I'd want to now. The crossover between use and non use would be for me to see a line showing what I've drawn.

Even though gestures are nice and handy, I wonder why it got prioritized over some other more eagerly awaited features such as Reading View improvements, PBB support, etc.

Gestures didn't even appear on the Missing Features list nor the User Voice or All Our Ideas lists.

Can someone from Logos please comment on the reasoning behind this prioritization decision?

That would help me too. I would also like to see a "Gesture Legend" of some kind pop up whenever I click the right mouse button.

Good morning Thomas, would the line interfere with other right clicking uses? I don't know programming, just asking. If not, it would be helpful to see if you approximated the pattern to get the gesture. For example, when we go into the draw mode, the display "freezes" which I guess is why we can't save our drawing like a highlight.

The items on the pending list are being worked on. PBB support, your cited example , is not being ignored. Picture having a room full of programmers, there are only so many people who can actively work on a single project and keep it cohesive. Other programmers will be assigned other tasks. In this instance I think it's safe to say that the programmers given the task of coding gestures had a much easier time of it than the PBB programmers. I do hope this doesn't sound dismissive.

I would venture to say it doesn't have to. If the line didn't begin to draw until a gesture in progress was "recognized" by the program. You might see a small delay while performing the gesture.

When using Logos on a laptop or any small display, screen real estate is at a premium. What I like about gestures is that it reduces the need for the locator bar. ( I run program scaling at 80-90% for the same reason.)

Now that the PC and Mac versions are using a common code base this may well be a feature that was a priority for the Mac Team making it a bonus for those of us who use PCs.

Could we have the option of turning these off please? For those who like them, these are great. But I don't need or want to learn yet another way to do the same thing, and hate doing things accidentally and then trying to figure out what I did, how to undo it, and how to not do it again.

I don't anticipate learning them, and remember in L3 that sometimes I would do something with my mouse that L3 would interpret as a gesture, when I didn't intend to.

BTW, it's incredibly easy to start that read aloud feature. That "greater than" (>) symbol does not need to be very large. It seems just a shaky hand away from a simple right click. (Took me a while to figure out how to turn the thing off too!)

I just played around with this a bit and found that these gestures can be as small as my text line height. Suddenly, I'm jumping ahead and I'm not sure how I got where I got. Or the tab closes and I don't know why. If I had Parkinson's disease, or some other condition that caused a
slight shaking in my hand, the smallness of these gestures could be a
real problem. Or, imagine someone trying to select text with the right mouse button (try selecting a Bible verse (e.g.) that will imitate a gesture). Instead of selecting text, the tab closes, or some other strange thing happens. This makes me think these should be off be default, so that only people who know what they are and want to use them will turn them on.

Yes, please. i use a touchpad which can easily cause a problem when selecting text.

Maybe: Program Setting values of OFF / Small / Large, so that a small mouse movement will not trigger as a gesture, as Richard commented, if we set it to Large.

It would have been far better for Logos to concentrate on customer-prioritised features and optimization than introduce nice-to-have features like mouse gestures. I'm not sure the problem is misinterpreting mouse movements as it is misinterpreting a deliberate gesture - it is easier to close a tab when you intend to open the Contents pane. But I would prefer that gestures be optional rather than introduce a graphical representation of a gesture - remove any possibility that they can be a performance/UI issue over and above what we are currently experiencing with notes, parallel resources, etc.

I think I might disagree with you here, Dave. If I recall the lack of gestures created a real usability issue for some users - laptops or tablets. If my vague memory is correct, then it is one of those things that Logos should prioritize based on their long range business plan rather than on user priorities. And please remember I was one who pushed for formal user prioritization for some time before it was given a try. Strictly user prioritization with a user base such as Logos would result in a narrowing of the Logos user base not a broadening of it. One would be trimming both ends of the bell curve off.

Finger gestures for touch screen or touch pad were mentioned as usability issues but not mouse gestures! I can sympathise with the former because of the user interface.

The gestures—like many of the non-essential but nice-to-have features—were implemented by one of our summer interns, who are not typically assigned the job of solving the (usually very complex) issues "that are mentioned frequently in the forums". Arguably, we could have had all our interns helping with the Print/Export feature to get 4.1 finished sooner, but we like having variety in the types of projects we give our interns, and it provides a good way for us to implement features that a small set of users really appreciate, but might never make it to the top of the priority list otherwise.

I thought that might of been the case. The jury is out for me how much I will use them.. Probably the biggest 'issue' I've had with them so far is right-clicking in the wrong spot and bring up the right-click menu.
