Devotions Report

Just thinking this morning.....

What about a customizable devotions report that would pull in:

  • My selected Bible reading plan text (or links)  (especially discontiguous chapters like the Prof Horner plan) one after another.  Of course, include a link next to each listed pericope to open a passage guide on it.
  • The Prayer requests that are slated for today.
  • Any of today's Devotional readings from the calendar devotionals which I preselect.

Of course I should be able to arrange these in the order that I want it to appear each morning.

Hmm Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

    Edit Note:

Thinking more about this should the report have a notes section and be saveable by date so that it could become a daily devotional journal ?

This is a great idea including the journal part. I would vote for this!!

Yeah!  That is a great addition Andrew, and it fits precisely with the current document model.  The only need on top of that is to have an index of daily notes.

One could come fairly close to this in a layout. Would some customized panes in a layout be an alternative ... I'm thinking along the lines of being able to link a dated resource to a specific tab. And, Thomas, you missed the most important element for making it useful:

    • My selected lectionary readings that are slated for the day.

(Seriously, even if I am noted for dogging lectionaries) [:D]

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Just to clarify, but how, specifically, would this differ from the homepage? It seems to me that most of what you are suggesting is already available.

Indeed!  I actually do have a devotions layout (sans the lectionaries sorry for my oversight [;)).

As for adding the lectionaries, YES!  I would love it!  Customizability just like the other guides.

Thanks for asking Darren,  I would personally envision this not being just links to the material (though that's possible I suppose) but the actual material.  IOW I'd like to have my assigned Bible chapters/pericope's listed in the order that I would read them, followed by the other texts as well.

HOWEVER, if the report were a simple series of links it would still accomplish more than the home page does. In my imaginary report, the sections I add would automatically expand based on the day's date and then clicking the links would pop open the books in order (or all at once?)

As it stand right now, I have to

    1. load the home page,
    2. click my bible reading plan
    3. Close the info window since I don't want it
    4. close the auto generated passage guide
    5. Resize my Bible window for easy reading and read.
    6. Go back to the home page
    7. Click on my first calendar devotional reading.
    8. Read it
    9. Go back to the home page
    10. Click on my other calendar devotional
    11. Open my prayer document
    12. etc...

Lots of steps to finish what one report with today's links all in a row could do.  (Or in my current settup a layout.)

The problem with using a layout is that I have to remember to update it every day just before I close it with all of tomorrow's readings set and ready to read.

Note: I know I typed in a lot of unnecessary steps for things that could be easily accomplished with shortcuts etc.  However - this is the way people learning to use Logos will experience the program as a devotional tool.

This is why I included the long way of doing things.

It seems to me that making a layout date dependent might  be the easier modification to the system

Darren, I must admit when I first read Tom's suggest I asked the same question before giving it the thumbs up.  For me it differ's in that it pulls everything together neatly in the one place.  The Home page, you'll find devotionals in the 'newspaper', but prayer lists and reading plans in the ribbon. And as Tom expounded there's lots of steps to go through to tie everything together.   If a layout could be date bound then that might be an option but where do you place the control for that ?  Currently layouts really dont' have a settings panel. I thinik a devotional guide would be something that really sets Logos Bible Software apart from other options for the layperson who uses bible software mainly for this type of study. Everything they would want to access for a devotional sectoin would be all rolled up into one neat report they would just need to open. I've made a quick mockup in Snagit Editor of what the report potentially could look like. Note it is rough and no way intended as a final design but just as a visual on the idea.  For instance I took some snapshots from Libronix 3 Lectionary viewer, just to put a picture to that section.  For one of the other sections I took some screen dumps from a wiki page.

@MJ As Andrew points out, you'd have to include settings in layouts etc.  But IMHO Guides are designed for this sort of thing.

Andrew, that's perfect!  I had originally thought about including the actual text, but then it wouldn't function like all the other guides. but This ties it together perfectly.  All in one nice tidy panel, and ready for today!

Report had not translate to Guide for me. I'd have no problem with it appearing as another Guide. I'd thought you wanted the various panels open.

Can I blame Morris Proctor?  He calls them "reports" and "guides" interchangeably.  See where listening to the professionals will get ya   [:p]

Definitive Mo's fault. My installation of Logos 4 doesn't vary image  though it might be fun if it did. Should I petition Logos to add a little Harry Potter Hogwarts unpredictability?

Thanks for the bump.  I missed this discussion during the first round.  I like this suggestion a lot.

What I personally would like to see a layout tied to the current day (can go back and forward into time), and have this be my default layout that opens when I start L4.
