"Recommended" libraries for the Greek / Hebrew course?

I'm interested in the http://www.logos.com/products/details/5876 (Learn to Use Biblical Greek and Hebrew with Logos Bible Software).

However, at the bottom, it recommends using:

Scholar’s Library is recommended. Also recommended, but not required: BDAG and A Concise Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament (Holladay).

As much as I would love to get those sets, I've just purchsed Logos 4 and a couple books already, and this course is rather expensive (for me) by itself (even w/ monthly payments)

But I don't want to feel like I'm missing out on this education either. So before I buy..

1) Why are those sets recommended?

2) How will not getting them impact the course learning?

3) Will I be at a disadvantage by not doing so?

I cannot afford to get this course AND the recommended sets, but I also don't want to be at a disadvantage. My thought process here is that if it would really be best to get the recommended sets, then I should just wait a year or so before making the purchase. It just depends on how much these recommended sets will impact the course itself.

The product you are referring to is a video series not software. I purchased it when it came out and have reviewed all the videos (Hebrew and Greek) and I'm now working through them again slowly. They are a great resource.

As for the Scholars Library, this is necessary inorder to have access to some of the tools and features that base package and higher comes with. What base package did you purchase?

As for the BDAG and Concise HALOT those are helpful in working through the video series, but you could probably get by without them if cannot do them right now. That is not an official statement of minimum requirements, rather just an opinion based on my experience with the videos so far.

My suggestion would be to determine what you really want to accomplish with the software and your bible study right now and talk with Logos Sales on the phone to see what kind of package they can put together to help you reach your goal(s). I think you will find them very helpful. I have talked with this person before and he was great (as all Logos employees I have ever dealt with are).

Hi Jeremy, the videos will teach you how to use the tools that you get with Scholars and above packages. The videos are not designed to teach you greek or hebrew. Some of the tools will be available in lesser packages I believe but to be able to do everything in the videos you need scholars and above.

You would be able to survive without BDAG and Holladay to initially. If you have no Greek or Hebrew then I would probably recommend getting some primer's first and working through them before getting into the videos so you will be more comfortable with the topics discussed in them.

If you have no exposure to greek I would recommend:

Karios: A Beginning Greek Grammar and Workbook

If you have no exposure to Hebrew I would recommend:

The First Hebrew Primmer: Textbook, Answer Book and Audio Companion

Both of these resources only come with the Portfolio package (the most expensive package) so these would be good purchases to add to your current set of resources.

So in summary,

1) if you have no Greek or Hebrew then grab a primmer on these first:

Either one or both depending up on your interest:

Karios: A Beginning Greek Grammar and Workbook and/or The First Hebrew Primmer: Textbook, Answer Book and Audio Companion

You might be able to get these on a payment plan.

If you already have exposure to the language(s) you are interested in the skip this step and go straight to 2)

2) Check out your upgrade pricing for scholars and if a payment plan over 12 months would fit your budget

3) Get the Learn to Use Biblical Greek and Hebrew with Logos Bible Software videos.

4) Look at getting BDAG and Holliday.

(Proceed to each step as you have the funds of course)

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I purchased the Study package (the 2nd one up from the basic version). I have little of Greek or Hebrew (really need a refresher from the basics), but it's been a goal of mine for quite some time to take it more seriously (I recently ran across some very, very old textbooks my grandfather used when he was teaching Greek, and it sparked a renewed interest).

I'll look into the primer books first as it seems like a logical start.

Now, since I bought the Study package, which is short of several of the books and content found in the Scholar's Library...am I correct in understanding you that Logos can create a customized package for me for some of the items found in the Scholar's Library?

Or what about discounts for upgrading from a lessor package to a more in-depth one? This was mentioned, but I don't know where to find this out? Is it in my account area or something?

Thanks guys for all the help. This product and the community seem to be top-notch. I randomly ran across Logos4 from looking up info for "reftagger" (I'm an amateur Christian apologist who owns a debate site, so using reftagger as a feature caught my attention).

You can find out what the upgrade price would be by going to http://www.logos.com/upgrade and signing into your account.

But before you purchase it that way, I would suggest calling and speaking to a sales representative (mine is Santiago-- I have included his information below) at Logos and see if he can get you an even better package deal. It doesn't hurt to ask.
