Looking for a very good Greek Lexicon, advice?

I just purchased the
Enhanced Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew and English Lexicon of the OT (Unabridged) for Hebrew, and I understand this is one of the best for OT studies.

What would be the Greek comparable? Looking for one of the more respectable out there.

I believe the BDAG and the Liddell-Scott are highly recommended. I think the BDAG being the most widely used.

In fact the Learn to Use Biblical Greek and Hebrew with Logos Bible Software recommends BDAG for use with the videos.

Jeremy, what base pack to you have?

Scholars includes the Unabridged Theological Dictionary of the New Testament (10 Vols.) In combination with a basic lexicon, this gives you your serious word study tool. If you haven't used it, the TDNT gives you the background use of the word prior to the NT, (classical Greek, LXX), usage in the NT (by genre/author), usage after the NT (church fathers.) Kittel was liberal so you have to adapt his conclusions in places, but the research is invaluable.

If you don't have the Scholars base pack, and you are a student, see if your college has an academic discount, or consider the upgrade path (perhaps on Mac day.)

Since you already have Hebrew lexicons, you may not want to go with the BDAG/HALOT bundle.

BDB is a fine lexicon. It is also very old which makes outdated in some areas. HALOT is considered the gold standard in Hebrew lexicography. I don't say this to discourage you from using BDB, I use it all the time. I just want to encourage the BDAG/HALOT bundle as the best options for both Greek and Hebrew.

Well, you've got the respectable advice[:)] ... I've found DBL Greek/Hebrew/Aramaic with alternative meanings according to Louw-Nida semantic domains to be more than adequate. But I use it in combination with TDNT/TWOT and the Expository Dictionaries of Mounce and Vine. If you have the Scholar's library you need only to buy Mounce/Vine.

FYI, HALOT and BDAG are not easy to understand (especially HALOT) if you don't have any previous Greek or Hebrew knowledge. I would recommend one of the other ones first.

Yes this is a good caveat Jeremy. While these are at the top of the tree. You need to know what your are reading for them to be of value.

Well, I'm new to studying Lexicons, and I don't know Greek or Hebrew well enough for any sophisticated Lexicon use probably.

While I do want quality (who doesn't, right?), I guess I do need a more entry level Greak Lexicon. I suppose I could just use the starter Lexicon in the base pack (Study Package), but since I got the BDB for Hebrew, that I should at least have a little better of a resource for Greek.

Which "other ones" would you recommend?

Jeremy for now the DBL resources that come with Bible Study Library will sutie your needs. As discussed in another thread at this point your best option would be to pick up a primmer on greek (and hebrew if that interests you). Focus on working thorugh those..... when you are ready next thing would be to upgrade to scholars that would give you access to the greek and hebrew text and some addtionaly lexicons and grammars and tools to apply what you've learnt from the primer's work through that material and keep an eye out just in case Logos offers the Learning to Use Greek and Hebrew with Logos videos on a sale at sometime, because sometime they do surpise us with a special. I find BDB heavy going so I wouldn't feel compelled to get a comparable (expensive!) Greek lexicon whilst you have the DBL lexicons in your Library. I would recommend Mounce's Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words as a valuable adjunct to DBL.

I appreciate the tips though guys. Logos4 is one of the coolest software programs I've ever purchased (and I'm a tech-hound always looking for the latest and greatest gadgets and sofware apps).

Yes these are also a useful option. And the best way to get these is to purchase the AMG Bible Essentails CD-ROM...

Purchase them as individual resources and they cost $95US .. but buy the collection with additional resources and it only costs $65US
